Created as a secret retreat, our private vacation home, THE VENETIAN TERRACE DORSODURO, is best suited to a quiet couple, or a pair of good friends, wishing to experience a precious slice of authentic Venetian life! Nestled on the top two floors of a quaint waterside building adjacent to Veronese's masterpiece, the Chiesa San Sebastiano, our comfortable apartment lends itself to very special celebrations or simply provides for a memorable holiday in this most glorious of cities!
As one of only 2 units in a detached, ancient fisherman's house, we are exposed to sunlight on all 4 sides, a rarity in Venice, and aren't privy to ambient neighbor noise, thus ensuring a very relaxing environment at all times.
A much-prized altana makes for a wonderful alternative to days spent traversing the city along charming canals and narrow alleyways, and provides for unique and spectacular rooftop views over the city's skyline. Whether used to greet the morning with a special breakfast or to toast the end of a magical day with an aperitivo, this Venetian symbol features prolifically in paintings by Canaletto and Guardi!
Inside, Murano glass chandeliers suspended from ancient beams highlight polished terrazzo floors, windows are swathed in sumptuous velvets and silks, and beds are piled high with embroidered linens; all exist harmoniously alongside a well-appointed kitchen, a sparkling bathroom with a very large walk-in shower area, and countless other modern conveniences for maximum comfort and pleasure.
Please visit our personal website, too, for further details and to learn more about our special home and neighborhood.
*Available for a minimum of 3 nights' stay, but should 2 nights already exist between bookings, a 2 nights' stay is possible.*
We are a British/American couple who met and married in Florence 35 years ago!
Mark is an architect who worked for several years in Italy - instrumental in designing our 'new' apartment - and who now operates his own practice in Northern California.
Deborah is a retired professional ballet dancer with English National Ballet and then subsequently taught in London, Florence, and the USA.
Our love affair with Italy, and Venice in particular, has endured for decades, and now that we have created our own 'little jewel' in this intoxicating city we are delighted to make our apartment available to like-minded individuals and couples when we are not in residence.
Deborah and Mark Rusconi purchased this apartment in 2011
Dorsoduro, in which our apartment is located, has always been highly desired for its truly authentic Venetian ambience, and has attracted writers, painters and artists to its unique charms throughout the centuries.
We finally chose our home in this area, after viewing countless others throughout the city, as it met all the special features that we were searching for: a beautiful canal-side location, the distinct possibility of adding an altana (an outdoor room high above the city) to provide far-reaching views over the rooftops, but most important of all we are in a detached building with only 1 other neighbor downstairs..... a very rare advantage in Venice, where the majority of other apartments are in multi-story complexes, share many communal walls and can thus be dark and somewhat noisy. Additionally, our apartment is located well-above acqua alta levels, making it a safe refuge during high tides!
Our good fortune is that we are open to sunlight on all 4 sides, have commanding views of at least half a dozen nearby churches from our altana, can spend hours watching all manner of watercraft glide by, and yet fall asleep to the serene sounds of the canal lapping below!
To find our 'perfect' home took several years of searching, but we are thrilled with what we have been able to accomplish! As rental apartments become more prevalent within Venice, our rather unique situation has made us realize just how blessed we are to have chosen our home where we did, the vision we had to turn it into something charming and personal, and the pleasure it will provide for years to come!
Along with our aforementioned location and special building, creating a truly comfortable and welcoming home was of great importance to us.
Books on a wide variety of subjects fill our large library, Italian-themed films and music CDs are provided for further enjoyment, and an extremely comfortable sofa and chairs are all conducive to an evening spent snuggling at home!
Our ability to provide an altana - a much prized addition - offers guests a once-in-a-lifetime personal opportunity to view the city from a vantage point very few people ever have the chance to experience. Based on a 4-post design frequently seen in paintings by Canaletto and Guardi, it is a magical location, particularly at certain times of the day, when the church bells in the tower behind the apartment peel. Alternatively, it makes for an intimate space in which to enjoy a personal breakfast at sunrise, or for a quiet 'aperitivo' before heading out to dine at one of our nearby excellent family restaurants.
With all there is to see in Venice, we have placed great importance on providing the best, most comfortable, mattresses to ensure a good night's sleep at the end of each day! Our bed heads were specifically designed to represent a gondola seat, and with their undulating style guests are able to fully open the windows above for maximum air-flow; additionally, all bedspreads were created and personally made by the owners.
Century-old family-painted watercolors grace the master-bedroom walls, oil paintings by a favorite uncle (now deceased) are given pride of place in several rooms, and along with all our other much-cherished furniture, we can now surround ourselves in an environment born out of love and wonderful memories!
As some of our first guests are now returning to our special home for another visit we realize that not only does 'The Venetian Terrace, Dorsoduro' mean so much to us, but it has also captivated the hearts of many new friends we have made along the way!
............ we had a lovely holiday. It was great to see Venice from outside the main tourist areas. Whilst St. Mark's and the Rialto were definitely worth a visit, we did find ourselves more and more returning happily to the Dorsoduro area for the odd meal out, for ice-creams at Gelateria Nico, for the cooling breeze from the Zattere, for the sound of Italian voices......... and for the fish market. Came quickly to the conclusion that the final recommendation on dining well in Venice in your folder is the best - buy good fresh local food (especially the fish from the local market), cook it simply and enjoy with a nice glass of chilled wine!
So, thank you - you gave us a very memorable holiday.
Everything is as advertised and more. The apartment is cozy, decorated tastefully and it really felt like a home. The apartment was super clean, everything was in good roder. There are clear instructions posted all over the apartment so you never have to guess how things work and what the owners expectations are. Everything you need is supplied. There is a grocery store near by for foods and wines. Customer service worked like a clock from the exchange of emails with the owners to the reception by the rental agency representative. We took the land taxi option from Marco Polo airport which dropped us off a few hundred meters from the apartment, and it was super easy, fast and 45 euros. It is in a quiet neighbourhood and a 15-20 minute walk from Piazza San Marco. Venise is about walking the town, so no issues with the location. We took a 3 day pass for the water bus and there is a stop 2 minutes from the apartment and it was very convenient. We had a great time and wholeheartedly give the place our top recommendation.
The apartment was lovely and very comfortable for our family of 3. The views from the altana (which we retreated to every evening) were stunning and the location fantastic. We were walking distance to all the main attractions in Venice. I think we covered all of them! We were within steps of amazing restaurants, shops, sights and the water taxi. The apartment was serene in the evening with it being located in the quiet neighborhood of Dorsoduro. A true gem! Thank you, Deborah and Mark for sharing your beautiful home with us. The only thing we would change is a longer stay in The Venetian Terrace.
Treated to a very memorable 3 night stay at this gorgeous apartment by my lovely husband! From the initial booking through to our arrival, communication with the owners was first rate. We were met by friendly Julia from the local management agency who helped us to the apartment, showed us around, explaining how everything worked and offered additional advice on nearby restaurants that might be of interest. It's very clear that Deborah and Mark have put in every thought to furnishing their beautiful home: beds were super comfortable, plenty of hot water on demand, extensive cooking facilities and a terrific assortment of guide books and Italian themed DVDs. The altana was something truly unique with its far-reaching views and we made wonderful use of it every evening enjoying a cocktail. All in all we could not have wished for a more memorable visit to the city. It provided us with a relaxing and romantic environment that we will always remember fondly. Our heartfelt thanks to Deborah and Mark for permitting us to use their home to celebrate a very special milestone in our lives.
We spend six nights in this beautiful apartment, which is situated in a quiet part of Dorsoduro. The apartment is very well furnished with great taste and very well maintained. The kitchen (and everything else also) ist very well stocked, even the kitchen knifes are sharp :-).
There's everything you may need for a perfect stay in Venice, for cooking meals or for relaxing after a long day walking through this beautiful city and reading one of the travel guides, which you find in the apartment.
The sleeping room upstairs is very cosy and the bed is very comfortable.
The Meet & Great Service was perfect and allows us a relaxed start in the apartment.
The owners are very friendly and helpful.
We highly recommand this place.
Nearby are a lot of Restaurants and a great Supermarket.
Had a wonderful time on our recent visit to Venice in this excellent apartment. Everything is as described & the owners have paid a great deal of attention to detail, including a good selection of books & guides. We immediately felt comfortable & at home. The apartment is in a quiet location but is easy to find, ideal for exploring the real Venice.
San Basilio vaporetto stop is a few minutes away & there are plenty of good restaurants, cafes & shops, including a supermarket nearby.
The altana is a real bonus, great to sit out for breakfast & at night with a glass of
We enjoyed walking along the Zattere & would recommend La Piscina, the floating restaurant. We also had an excellent meal at Ai Artisti restaurant.
The owners, Mark & Deborah were always prompt & very helpful when we were in touch with them & we will definitely stay here again.
I was lucky enough to spend a week in this beautiful apartment! It was perfect for me, my daughter and son in law and 10 year old grandson. I fell in love with Venice in general but especially with the quite neighborhood of Dusodoro.
The apartment is elegantly furnished and equipped with all you might need. You can certainly see and appreciate the care and love that went into the renovation. I hope one day to return to Venice and stay here again.
Perhaps the most alluring of the six sestieri in Venice, Dorsoduro is much sought after by both homeowners and visitors alike, most notably for its truly authentic ambience.
Crowned by the magnificent dome of Santa Maria della Salute at the head of the Grand Canal, the area contains some of the most picturesque canals and campi in the entire city, and offers a wonderful respite after a day of visiting some of Venice's most famous attractions.
Filled with a variety of local shops and intimate bars, where you can enjoy a frothy cappuccino and warm brioche alongside our neighbours, and offering a wide array of family-owned restaurants for memorable dining, this desirable part of the city imparts a personal glimpse of everyday Venetian life.
Carefree children play in the local squares, lovers linger over drinks at nearby outdoor cafes, and daily market stalls simply overflow with an abundance of seasonal produce.
For a true flavor of Venice, this area has it all!
