Overview

About the property

Quiet 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath Cottage, Child Friendly, minutes from town

A sweet and comfortable little guest house w/ a full kitchen and garden on our half acre in a quiet cul-de-sac. Located above the SB Mission in Mission Canyon. You hear more birds than traffic--yet you're only 10 minutes from the heart of downtown...

A copy of our cottage listing appeared on crags list. We never use that site. If you are currently reading this on craigs, it is not authentic. A well behaved dog is welcome, but we MUST know about your pet BEFORE we confirm your booking. Let us know the breed or mix, weight and age. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON'T BRING YOUR DOG WITHOUT TELLING US IN ADVANCE.

The Space:

The cottage has a quiet & peaceful bedroom that sleeps 2 in a comfy queen sized bed, a small (see picture) private bath with shower, and a small living room. There is a full kitchen for your exclusive use that is equipped with full sized stove/oven, microwave, full sized fridge, small appliances, place settings and all that you might need to prepare and serve meals. Living and dining spaces are cozy, clean and comfortable.

There is also a queen air-bed that can be easily set up in the living room for children or one extra guest. The cottage is ideal for a couple, and it's quite comfortable for families with two children.

There's lots of outdoor space on our property and we are in a quiet, very walkable neighborhood. Behind the cottage our guests have a private, secluded garden with native plants and succulents, and a small dining area with a Weber grill if you'd like to cook outdoors.

We're a short walk to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden or to the Tunnel & 7 Falls trail heads and many miles of scenic hiking or biking. Being a bit up the canyon, we're usually above the coastal fog, and we're often clear and sunny on mornings when much of Santa Barbara is still cool and gray.

It's just a few minutes drive to Mission Santa Barbara, the Natural History Museum and downtown Santa Barbara with sightseeing, restaurants, tasting rooms, shopping, theaters, parks and beaches.

The way the cottage and it's off-street parking are situated at the back of our property you'll be able also come and go with complete privacy day or night. However, we also like meeting new people and interacting with our guests and are happy to share whatever local knowledge we have or be of any help we can throughout your stay.

One thing to note is that If you are currently reading this on craigs, it is not authentic. We also rent out the Studio next to the Cottage (see pictures) they share a wall but are completely separate. Depending on the day there may be other guests on the property.

Off street parking & high speed WiFi included.

We love well behaved dogs.

No smoking anywhere on the property.

Guest Access:

There is a private garden behind the cottage for the tenants exclusive use.

Interaction with Guests:

We love to meet new people and share whatever we know of Santa Barbara with them, but we also know how wonderful privacy can be. We're always glad to be of help, but your time here is all your own...

The Neighborhood:

We live in a quiet neighborhood in the lower foothills above Mission Canyon. There's not much traffic so it's a great area for evening strolls or dog walking. We're about a 5 minute walk to the gorgeous Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, and about a mile from the 7 Falls/Tunnel trailhead which brings you into to the extensive network of hiking and biking trails in the National Forest above us.

Getting around:

Since we're up in the foothills a bit you'll need a car (or a bike and strong legs) to get around while you're here. The nearest city bus is over a mile away.

About Bonnie & Dan

We love hiking, biking, gardening, animals, food, wine, travel and the beach. Have been lucky to live in this wonderful community for 23 years and happy to share everything about it with our guests.

Bonnie & Dan purchased this cottage in 1998

Why Bonnie & Dan chose Mission Canyon

We looked for a year for a house we could agree easy. Until we saw a dilapidated 1940's 2 bedroom, 1 bath nestled under the most spectacular 80 foot Italian Stone Pine in all of Santa Barbara. We undertook a very major remodel of the home and somehow our marriage survived it. We've been here for 19 years. Sadly the 65 year old Stone Pine is gone now, the ocean view is much better, but we miss it...

What makes this cottage unique

The quietist part of Santa Barbara we've ever found. No streetlights, no sidewalks, yet we're only 10 minutes from the heart of Santa Barbara's downtown. Up in the hills above the coastal fog and close to miles of fabulous hiking trails and 180 degree views of the coast.

Lovely neighborhood, clean quarters.

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stated at this small but comfortable cottage in the hills of Mission Canyon. The neighborhood was awesome and we enjoyed our morning walks with our dog. The cottage was thoughtfully equipped, clean, quiet and comfortable. Our hosts were gracious and friendly and we had no issues the entire week we stayed there. Even though we had to drive to town, it was not a problem and everything is close. We were close to the Arroyo Burro beach which our dog loved and was our favorite beach. We were within walking distance to the botanical gardens and the Mission was a five minute drive. We actually enjoyed being a little bit out of town due to our lovely surroundings and the peace and quiet. We both slept better than we had in a long time. Our cottage was perfect for two adults and a well behaved dog. Definetely would go back again.

The quiet cottage was the perfect spot for me. It was comfortable, especially the bed. Safe/secure.

The quiet cottage was indeed quiet and peaceful. I was aware the property owners were near so felt safe and also had a lot of privacy. Everything was clean and well appointed. Wish I could have stayed longer. The only challenge for me was the driveway, backing out was a little sketchy with other cars near. Also the bathroom is really small with not a lot of space for toiletries. Still very functional. I would stay there again. Thanks Dan and Bonnie

Away from the hustle and bustle...

  • 5 of 5

I stayed for 3 nights during a buisness trip. I brought my 2 older children along. This is a beautiful cottage surrounded by trees and beautiful gardens. The kitchen is well equipped to cook a home made meal. I appreciated the variety of spices they provided. Their wasn't anything that we needed except for the food to cook! We also brought our small dog along after getting approval from Dan. I was pleased to find dog bowls, a leash, cookies and doggy bags in case we needed them. My favorite part about my stay here is garden where I sat to enjoy my coffee in the morning. I look forward to my next trip and hope to stay here again.

Perfect Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This little cottage is perfect! A quiet little getaway looking over SB. It had everything we needed and easy parking. Right near Foothill Road which was great to take to go either direction for good hiking, but also just a minute from stores and 5 from downtown! Couldn't have asked for more!

Expected Better

Unfortunately, this rental didn’t work for me and it was not the great experience I had hoped it would be based on the other reviews.

The rental itself is fine. It’s simple with the basics, but nothing special.

--When I arrived all the windows had been shut, and it was a hot day so the place had a musty smell and it was quite stuffy.

-- There was no hand soap in the bathroom or bath/shower mats so when getting out of the shower, the floor was slippery. I did ask for soap but it wasn’t provided until late that same night with bath mats.

-- There were no garbage bags

-- The private back yard could be very cute but was in need of desperate landscaping. Everything was overgrown with weeds which took away from a relaxing feeling. It looked like it was later landscaped, but there was cut grass and branches everywhere including the table and chairs where you can sit and eat which was off putting, and just messy.

In short, it just didn’t feel very welcoming or hospitable. It also didn’t feel overly private since the owners cars were parked right in front of the rental and could be heard starting cars and talking early in the morning.

I visit Santa Barbara/Montecito often and typically stay in a hotel. This was my first VRBO stay and sorry to say, I wouldn’t stay at this property again.
