Stunning, art-filled, contemporary 2-bedroom, 4-bath apartment in a beautifully restored Colonial building in the heart of Cartagena’s walled historical district. Airy, spacious, elegant, colorful and tranquil. Enjoy a morning coffee on the private terrace with sweeping views of the old city and Caribbean Sea. From there you have the perfect vantage point to listen to the birds, watch the city wake up to another tropical day in paradise, unroll a yoga mat and do some sun salutation or just lay in the hammock and recover from a night out salsa dancing.
The building has a beautiful lobby, with wrought iron gates, fountains, hanging garden and 24-hr doorman. On the rooftop there is a swimming pool and hot tub with even more amazing views. Perfectly located in the historic city center, within easy walking distance to the plazas, churches, museums, restaurants, clubs and shops that make this city special. Apartment was previously owned by a leading restoration architect, whose projects include Hotel Santa Teresa and other historical mansions in the city and around the world.
Apartment has limestone floors, stucco walls, wood plantation shutters, open Moorish style panels allowing light and breeze to flow from central atrium. Modern kitchen with granite counters, side by side stainless steel refrigerator/freezer.
Twice per week, a trusted housekeeper, who has been with the family for many years and is an superb cook, specializing in delicious local, traditional cuisine.
Apartment owners (one of whom is a Cartagena native) can recommend restaurants, cultural events, art galleries and hidden gems of this charming city.
We live in Houston, Texas, and spend a few months each year in Cartagena, my hometown. Lou is a ship pilot and I'm a retired chef.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this apartment in 2010
The apartment is unique and charming. We love to watch the sunset by the pool on the roof of the building. The 360* view of the sea, the Bay, forts, churches and all of Cartagena unfolds around us. It's a quiet oasis in the middle of the historical district.
Walking around the historical district is a never ending treat. The plazas offer a shady spot to cool off and watch the street life. There's often music, dances, festivals, parades and celebrations. Restaurants and clubs offer infinite possibilities for entertainment.
Amir and his guests were a delight to host. They were in town for a wedding and were very organized and easy to communicate with during the planning process. One of them spoke Spanish, which made interface with local contacts run smoothly. They are experienced travelers, eager to explore and discover what the city has to offer. They were also polite, neat and observed house rules. Without reservation would recommend Amir as a guest.
The best thing I can say is that the pictures and description are very accurate. This is truly a lovely unique design apartment with beautiful art and modern appliances in a fantastic location in Cartagena. The rooftop pool is shared, but we never saw other residents up there and the water temperature and cleanliness were perfect. The views from the pool and the private rooftop patio are spectacular. I would definitely take these sunset views over the touristy Café Del Mar anytime, although definitely check out the that area and “walk the wall.” While we did not stay during the holidays, the weekends are still very loud until early hours in the old city from all the bars and clubs. However, the bedroom shutters are covered with clear plastic shields that help, and with earplugs that are provided in the unit, we had no problem drowning out the noise completely even at its loudest. That said, you don’t want to sleep much in this city anyway. Lots to do. All the building staff (available 24/7 to open the front gate) were extremely friendly and helpful. The maid is also very kind and is a great chef. She prepared a wonderful brunch for us and some friends at a very reasonable price. Of course, Emmy, the owner was incredibly kind and helpful with ideas and suggestions and extremely attentive to our requests and questions. One note of caution, this is a very unique design with beautiful open air living areas (outside the bedrooms) surrounding a wonderful atrium going down to the ground floor of the building. But that means that during the hot months in midday (it was 90F on average during our stay), these areas get very hot and humid. There are ceiling and floor fans that are provided which help a lot, but you’ll most likely want to be at the rooftop pool or in one of the nicely air conditioned bedrooms if you are in the house midday. There are at least 2 good sized markets nearby for all grocery needs. Some of the best coffee shops, restaurants and bars in the old city are within a short walk. Overall, an amazing experience and would recommend this unit to anyone planning to stay in the old city.
We are very greatful to have selected this residence, not just for its amenties and location, but the support we received from the owners.
Emmy, the owner, was in touch with us many weeks in advance and we felt comfortable from the beginning to the end of our experience.
The apartment building is a very friendly place and a locally owned atmosphere. A porter is there to keep security at the building and help with any questions you may have before starting your day.
There are many reasonably priced restaurants nearby and you don't ever feel like a tourist.
The rooftop pool is shared by the building, but even during the holidays, there were seldom any more people up there than just my family. Simply the most amazing views I can imagine of the city.
A brief warning to those visiting during the holidays - a nightclub was operating on the rooftop of a building about 500 feet away. For 5 days during the new year (and maybe other times) they played deafening bass and club music all night and at times until 8 in the morning. The upstairs bedroom faces this club and there is no ability to sleep at that time. Bring earplugs or drink plenty!
Overall, we were happy and would definitely stay again!
Had a fantastic stay in Cartagena. It was a pleasure to deal with the owner with quick responses via email. Owner also had a local contact who met us upon arrival to greet us and was very quick to help us with any issues we had (issues with the Internet one morning and he was there within 30 minutes to replace the modem and fix the issues).
The home was everything we hoped for and the owner even provided us with an extra mattress as we needed 3 beds. We spent a lot of time on the rooftop pool which has fantastic views as you are above most the buildings in the area.
Location was very convenient and we were so glad we didn't choose some of the other properties we were looking at outside the old city walls. The roads are a little confusing so we did get lost especially the first night we were there. Don't rely on the illy coffee sign next door as it is not visible when the coffee shop is closed!
Thank you so much! Would recommend this to friends and relatives.
When you walk around the historic Centro district in the early morning or late afternoon, the sun isn’t quite as hot and you can take your time through the elegant plazas and down side streets, past block after block of candy-colored homes and grand colonial mansions with wooden balconies just wide enough for a hammock, many built around the time of Cervantes. Cartagena is a place of romance and history. Through the ages it has inspired poets, novelists, artists. Its cobblestone streets, courtyards, secret gardens hidden behind magestic facades reminiscent of distant glory. The ramparts surrounding the city glow in the waning light. The sound of waves slapping against the shore echoes across the cobblestones along with the clip-clop of horses pulling carriages with lighted lanterns mounted on their sides. Colonial Cartagena, can make a romantic of just about anyone.
The historic Centro district also offers a dizzying array of restaurants, clubs, designer shops and art/crafts to which you can easily walk. In the evening the plazas are alive with music, dancers and street life.
