A TRUE MICHIGAN VACATION! Looking for a unique place to get together with a large family group for an incredible week? You have found it! With an expansive front lawn, woods in the back and private stairs to the beach, The Blue and Yellow Houses offer the perfect gathering spot. These two cottages are situated on over an acre of land with breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and jaw dropping sunsets. The area is somewhat remote so peace and tranquility are a given. However, since the cottages are located halfway between South Haven and Saugatuck, restaurants and activities are within 15 minutes north or south. The picture perfect houses sit only 11 feet apart offering the feeling of togetherness yet the separation of two homes. Between them they boast 7 bedrooms, 3.5 baths and two of everything else!
The Yellow House was built in 2002 but gives the feel of a vintage cottage. The home is centered around the large kitchen with a 4' x 8' island - perfect for serving evening buffets for the group. There is a king bedroom and a queen bedroom on the main floor along with a full bath. The second level is home to two more bedrooms, both with 2 twin beds, and a second compartmentalized bathroom (a toilet room, a shower room and a room with 2 pedestal sinks) for multiple users at the same time. There is an open front porch and side porch plus a fully enclosed hot water outdoor shower.
The Blue House was completely renovated in 2013, keeping much of the original charm of the 1930's cottage. The main floor has a living room and a family room, as well as a dining area and kitchen. It also has two queen bedrooms, a full bath and a half bath. The upstairs is a bunk room with 4 twin beds and plenty of room to hang out. The Blue House has an enclosed front porch as well as a fully enclosed hot water outdoor shower.
These houses have been set up to accommodate the needs and demands of multiple families. Each house has a very well equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, microwave and place settings for 16 as well as Weber gas grills. Also provided per house are 2 beach bags, 8 beach towels, 6 beach chairs (which are kept at the beach), a soft sided cooler and beach shovels & toys for smaller children.
The houses offer a vacation experience from years past. Spend your days building sand castles, making sand angels, looking for beach glass, playing soccer on the beach, jumping the waves or simply soaking in the sun. Then, finish the days with amazing sunsets, fires on the beach or hunker down with a movie and popcorn. Each house offers a good selection of board games, children's books and movies for all ages as well as a basket of blankets to snuggle up. Please note neither of the cottages have cable or internet to distract from your family time together.
For the past 10 years The Yellow House has been our private summer retreat. In 2012 we were fortunate enough to have the opportunity to purchase our neighbor, The Blue House, a true 1930's cottage. We stripped everything down to the studs and put it back together with much of the original charm giving us the option of housing even more family and friends. With our children getting bigger, the amount of time we can spend here is diminishing, but we hated the thought of them sitting empty. We have enjoyed more great times with friends and family here than we can count. It is truly a special place to us and we are excited for others to have the opportunity to experience it. Every time we turn down the gravel road, you can feel the stress fade away. My favorite is by far watching the sunset every night!
Denise purchased this house in 2002
We actually bought the property on a whim and ended up falling in love with the area it is located. We are secluded but in 15 minutes can be in Saugatuck or South Haven. Since my husband hates crowds, this is the best of both worlds.
The thing I loved about the property the most when we purchased it (back then it was an 800 sq. ft. cottage, built about the same time as The Blue House) was the front lawn. The fact our small children could play while we sat on the porch and we didn't have to worry about them falling over the bluff gave me great comfort. Not to mention, looking out at the water below the tree canopies reminded me of where I grew up.
We could not have been more thrilled with our stay at the Blue and Yellow houses!!!! The pictures truly do not do this property justice. The views of Lake Michigan are stunning and the placement of the deck and group table is one of the best meals with a view that I have ever experienced. The houses are endlessly charming and are equipped anything and everything that you and your family could possibly need. Additionally there were so many special touches and features to these properties, for example, guidebooks, outdoor showers, grills, a great movie selection, beach chairs, a whole crate of beach toys...I could go on and on. Denise was so pleasant to work with and was very responsive to any questions or concerns. Our family would definitely consider returning to this property. We had a wonderful time in the perfect setting that will never be forgotten.
This property was perfect for our families! The view and the beach is of course gorgeous! The deck and large table was a favorite meeting place for everyone, especially to watch the sunset. We had an infant and a couple of small children that could be tucked in early in the Blue House without being bothered by our card tournament in the Yellow House. Having two kitchens made cooking for a large group much easier, and the large island in the Yellow House was a great place to prepare our meals while singing to our favorite songs, laughing (a lot!) and just being together. The bedrooms were all very comfortable, the bathrooms were clean and spacious, and the outdoor showers were a favorite! Denise stocked the homes with everything we could possibly need, even extra sleeping bags, blankets and beach towels. The beach chairs (8) stored on the beach meant we didn't have to drag our own chairs up and down the stairs each time. We LOVED our week spent at this property and will definitely be back! Thank you Denise for sharing your beautiful lake homes with "4 sisters and our families!"
My extended family of 12 (9 adults, 3 young children) enjoyed a wonderful week in these houses. The houses were clean and neat upon arrival, and Denise the owner made the reservation and check in process very smooth and easy. The proximity of the houses to one another, and the variety of sleeping arrangements made accommodating a mixed party of grandparents, aunts, uncles, adult cousins both married and single, and young grandchildren very easy. We were able to do most of our food preparation and consumption at the bigger Yellow House or outside (we only went out to eat dinner one night), while using both kitchens for storage and refrigeration of our many supplies.
Both houses were well equipped with cooking utensils, pots, pans. plates, flatware and most everything needed to keep a large group fed and watered for a week. The two Weber grills did the brunt of the cooking work. Dishwashers in both houses made clean up a smaller chore than otherwise. Full scale food shopping is just 10 minutes away (and any emergency supplies (ice, beer, pop, newspapers etc) can be picked up at the wonderful Glenn Store just up the road.
The deck on the cliff had a table and chairs for 12, and it was a popular dinner site when the weather permitted. The porch of the Yellow House was also a regular gathering site.
The beach was beautiful, and although Lake Michigan is at a high level this year, there was plenty of room for all of us to sunbathe and play. While we saw other people up and down the beach, the area in front of the houses was relatively quiet and undisturbed. The stairs to the beach are sturdy, well lit for night use, and are not difficult to navigate for most people. Compared to other Lake Michigan bluff stairs we have traversed over the years, these were relatively benign.
THe large yard provided plenty of room for many activities, including volleyball, bocce, whiffle ball, touch football and general running around. The views from the houses and top of the bluff were spectacular, and we had the thrill of seeing three major Lake Michigan thunderstorms roll in with their typical sound and fury.
A note for those who feel a need to stay connected to work or the world via internet or TV: There is no internet service and the cell service is a bit spotty depending on your carrier. This was at first deemed a disappointment by some in our group but as the week went on it was universally seen as an unanticipated benefit. Disconnect and enjoy!
My husband and I rented these 2 houses for 2 weeks in August. The houses felt like home from the minute we walked in. Both houses were fully stocked with everything you need for a wonderful vacation. During the time we were here, we had between 4 and 16 people staying with us and everyone agreed this was an amazing rental. Denise was great to work with, both before we arrived and after we were there. She went out of her way to make sure we were totally comfortable. The photos don't begin to do the houses justice; both the houses and the property were clean and well cared-for. I would recommend these houses to anyone who wants to relax by Lake Michigan.
These cottages were perfect for our three families to get together in June 2014 – 18 of us total, with 12 kids of all ages. Denise was wonderful to work with in arranging our visit – a pleasant experience compared to a property management company. The cottages were clean, comfortable and furnished with quality details that made it a special vacation – beach towels, BBQ grills, and the décor went with the stunning beach location to give us a true Lake Michigan summer cottage experience. There was plenty of room in the kitchen area of the yellow house for us all to mingle while meals were being prepared. Both (the screened and open) porches were a perfect spot for us early-risers—to catch up on some reading while drinking some tea. We loved the large table on the bluff, having all meals there to enjoy the endless view. There was plenty of room on the lawns for our volleyball court, and these games were always followed by a swim in the lake and relaxing time on the beach. These homes exceeded our expectations and we hope to return.
Six families (12 adults and 10 children) stayed at these spectacular cottages over Memorial Day weekend. Upon inquiring about the property, Denise couldn't have been more accommodating and easy to work with. She answered all our questions in a very timely manner as the date approached and questions arose. It was a pleasure to chat with her and it's obvious from talking to her that she loves these cottages and we could see why. We arrived just in time on Friday to see a beautiful sunset. The cottages are immaculate and tastefully decorated. There were more than enough dishes, utensils, serving platters, etc... for our large group. Both kitchens were adequately stocked and besides our own food there really wasn't much we needed to bring. Games for the kids, sleeping bags, DVD's, beach toys, beach chairs --- basically everything one could need for the weekend was included! We spent most of our time on the lovely sandy beach that was great for little ones since they could wade out aways from shore without a major drop-off. Many of us took walks up and down the shoreline since it seemed you could walk forever. We used the lawn for evening soccer games and blowing bubbles. The outdoor showers were a life-saver since the kids were covered, covered and then more covered with sand. There always seemed to be someone on one of the porches either enjoying a morning cup of coffee or reading a book in the mid-afternoon. None of us had any complaints about our stay. There's already talk about returning in the fall to see the colors and visit the orchards. We would recommend this property to anyone looking for a peaceful get-away.
