Explore the scenic beauty of the Barrier Islands, home to some of Florida's most pristine, white-sand beaches, a state park, a national wildlife refuge, and once home to Native American Indians....and a few pirates.
Stroll out from this wonderful lair to enjoy a peaceful walk along the ocean or the bay, where the sunsets are a vibrant orange and red, Ospreys and Eagles fly overhead, and huge sea turtles visit in the summer months. This is true peace and relaxation, whether you visit in the summer to hang out by the pool with a tall margarita in hand, or you come in the winter and enjoy a good book by the fire after a stroll along the beach or a bike ride along the bike path. A good stock of cookbooks along with everything else you'll need awaits you in this beautiful kitchen. This house is the perfect spot to come with friends or to enjoy a family reunion!
Our parents 'found' this wonderful spot of heaven, St. George Island, in the late 80's and we've been coming down every year from all parts of the USA for our family reunion. In 1995, we had the perfect storm of luck which enabled us to build the Dragon's Lair.
We adore the Plantation & the constant desire to maintain the natural beauty that surrounds the community. The island offers beautiful white sugar-like sand. In the Plantation you'll always find plenty of peace whether it's on the bike path, kayaking the nooks and crannies of the bay, or just searching for shells along the beautiful beach.
After many relocations, we now live in Roswell, GA. We get down to the Dragon's Lair a couple times a year to enjoy the wonderful peace and delightful seafood. We are envious of the guests who come for a month at a time!! One day our dream is to spend a few months a year in the Dragon's Lair and barter weeks/months with others all over the world!
Leigh or Bob Rothman purchased this house in 2005
Dragon's Lair offers it's guests a beautiful home-away-from-home. Everything you need you'll find in this house. Whether you are making a Thanksgiving feast, looking for beach toys, a band-aide, something on the internet, a good book on fishing, a game of poker, a booster seat for the toddler,....it has it all!
It's a quick 5 minute walk to both the ocean and the tennis court. We have a wagon, coolers, beach chairs & umbrellas, kick boards, etc. to spend the day at the ocean....and an incredible assortment of every kind of beach toy you need that seems to grow every summer!
For bike riding, we offer an assortment of bikes for various sized people, a kid/grocery buggy to strap onto a bike, a tricycle & a couple scooters, etc. Helmets are required for kids and we have plenty for kids and adults.
Don't bother bringing a book because we have a well stocked library of all genres, both paperback and hardback.
For the kids, there's a Playstation 2 with an assortment of games (no violent games - teens/adults - bring your own).
There are TVs with DVD players in every bedroom. We have two living areas in the house - upstairs is the main living area with a large tv and surround sound system. The middle floor has a VHS player with Disney movies for the little kids as well as exercise videos should you feel motivated....
You'll find the pool a perfect size to easily watch kids, relax on one of the lounge chairs with a good book as the hummingbirds circle the red bottlebrush bushes and the palms rustle next to you....
Dragon's Lair is in a great location, large enough for each guest to be able to get away should they need more peace! It's on one acre of land and no houses are adjacent to it so you really have over 6 acres of property to yourself! Yet it is close enough to the Plantation entrance gate so that you can easily ride your bike to the lighthouse or make a quick run to the grocery store.
We filled the house with original artwork that celebrates the ocean & the human spirit of adventure. We've grown up around art and feel it brings additional peace to each of the rooms. Some of the artists represented include:
Richard Bickel: Richard Bickel’s photography crosses 70 countries and has been published throughout the world. His passion for exotic waters – Africa’s Niger and Burma’s Irawaddy – brought him to Apalachicola in 1994. He has since been capturing the rich culture of Florida’s last stand, publishing the best-selling photo books, The Last Great Bay and Apalachicola, An American Treasure. Bickel’s work has also appeared in The New York Times, Newsweek, Conde Naste Traveler and Travel and Leisure, and internationally in Die Zeit (Germany), The Times of London and Italian Public Television.
Thomas Swanston: Swanston exhibits regularly in galleries in Boston, Atlanta, New Orleans, Los Angeles, Santa Fe and with art consultants across the country. He has had thirteen solo and forty-six group gallery exhibitions, has been included in eight museum exhibitions and published in over fifty trade and lifestyle magazines. Swanston's work has been placed in public and private collections in the US, Europe, China, Korea, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Gail Foster: An uplifting and impassioned view of the human condition - one in which, regardless of gender, the inner power of the spirit is celebrated - defines Gail Foster's artwork. In addition to lifestyle and trade publications, Gail Foster's art has been featured in one museum solo show, eight museum group exhibits, twenty solo private gallery exhibits, fifty-one private gallery group exhibits and thirty public collections.
Artist, philanthropist, educator and activist, Foster resides and creates in Serenbe, an environmentally-conscious community located 25 minutes south of Atlanta, Georgia.
Fantastic place! Quite Spacious & Very Well Stocked. Incredibly Private. Plenty of stairs and you will walk about ~5mins either on a sand path or side street. No worries about any traffic between you and the beach. Bring a book to exchange or leave with their library.
We had an awesome family get together. 3 generations of family for a fantastic week of fun in the sun! Dragon's Lair was all it said it was. Kitchen full stocked and clean house. Needed better ice machine and wagon, but all the sand equipment was awesome! We are coming back this July too!
Just returned from a week of family vacation at Dragon's Lair! Setting was beautiful and house included amenities that kept the interest of ALL family members (young and old). House is well stocked, nicely furnished and there is enough space for all. Property exceeded our expectations and was a nice spot for family vacation. We would return to this oasis in a heartbeat if it was beachfront and had an elevator, but for the price--it was perfect!
Just returned from a fantastic week on St George!! Beautiful house, very nicely furnished, close to the beach. Seven adults and 2 childres, plenty of room to have a private moment when needed. Would recommend this house. Had a great time.....The only thing missing was an elevator, lots of stairs....
