Beautiful, Cozy Farmhouse On Acreage Minutes From Mankato

Bedrooms 2
Space 1,600 sq. ft.
Property type chateau / country house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Fully Remodeled, Beautiful, Welcoming Space-- Private, Yet Minutes From Downtown

Comfortable, warm and inviting-- all in an excellent location. This completely remodeled farmhouse is located on almost 8 wooded acres just a few short minutes from downtown Mankato.

In the warm months, cross the street and find yourself on miles of walking, running and biking trails connected to the Red Jacket Trail system. Head down the road 1/2 a mile and spend the weekend mountain biking at Mt Kato or pack your kayak or canoe and make your way to the Blue Earth River just a mile down the road. Grab the family and visit any number of the many recreational lakes in the area, several within 20 minutes of the house. Or stay home, grill and eat out on the patio and catch fireflies in the yard.

In the winter months, watch the downhill skiers and snowboarders ski the front side of Mt Kato from your living room window while comfortably nestled in front of a warm pellet stove, or hit the slopes yourself! Snowshoe or cross country ski along the trails… or stay home and enjoy the peace and comfort that this home provides. Soak in the antique clawfoot tub situated in front of the picture window looking out over woods. Watch the hawks and deer in the backyard. Whip up a delicious dinner in the custom kitchen, utilizing the ample soapstone countertops and butcher block island. Or start a fire in the easy-to-use wood pellet fireplace and spend the evening reading, watching a movie, or enjoying time with those you love.

This peaceful home would make a great weekend or week-long retreat for a couple, a small family or a single professional who has to be in the area for work. It is a well-priced and much more comfortable and spacious alternative to hotels in the area.

We now have an on-site caretaker who lives part time in a separate apartment, with a separate entrance, in the lower level/basement of the house (pictures of this space not posted on this website). The caretaker will mostly stay out of your way unless you need something, like a bonfire built, a restaurant recommendation or help booking a local outfitter for a river adventure.

About Jennifer

Teacher, mother, editor, horsewoman

Jennifer purchased this chateau / country house in 2007

Why Jennifer chose Minnesota

This house offered such a wonderful space in really one of the most beautiful sections of Mankato, the river valley. It was pretty rough when I bought it in 07, and many said it was way too big of a project for one person alone.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

There is just something about this property. You are close to everything, yet secluded just enough to feel peaceful when in the back property or relaxing in the home. The farmhouse is very well built and has great light because of its position on a small hill. It's one of those places where you just feel at home, for relaxing and rejuvenating.

Great place to stay! Home away from home.

My husband and I LOVED staying in this adorable, cozy little house. It has so much character! The pellet stove made for a cozy evening curled up with some blankets in the living room. We hope to find a house like this one to live in one day because it was that great! We will definitely want to stay there if we visit Minnesota again.

We had a lovely experience here and would highly recommend it to others!

It was very evident from the moment we walked into the farmhouse that a lot of time and care was put into making sure we had a comfortable experience. The bedding and sheets were possibly the softest we've ever felt. The pasta maker and bread maker were so much fun to use. And, the home was completely charming! We LOVED the kitchen. We'd highly recommend it!

Homey and cozy and conveniently located. We found everything we needed for a memorable stay.

We loved the farmhouse, the property location, the hiking and biking trail across the road and the chickens. We were, however, dismayed at the condition of the chicken shed. It obviously had not been cleaned in a long time. There was horse tack in there that was covered in chicken manure, as were all the shelves and stoops. All types of livestock need certain conditions of hygiene to remain healthy. We were grateful that the horses that were formerly there had been removed. A good solution would be a caretaker with a good bit of energy and common sense to render the poultry space clean and healthful. If that were to occur I would give this beautiful vacation rental five big stars.

Owner's Response: Hello, and thank you for your feedback. I am glad you loved the farmhouse, but I do feel I need to respond to the comment on the care of our chickens. Our 3 chickens are allowed to free roam almost 8 acres of grass and forest every day, as well as receiving supplemental food and shelter, so they are truly living a chicken dream life. This past summer, at night, we have been allowing them to roost in the shed beams instead of forcing them into the coop inside the shed, because they are safer from racoons (which are an issue there) at that height. This means that they are pooping all over the shed instead of just in their coop and there is some old horse tack in there that was damaged. <<On a side note: When we did have horses--which was years ago-- they were lovingly cared for and their tack was clean and organized. >> We felt that this sacrifice of order in the old shed was worth it for their safety. Regardless, normally, we do have a caretaker cleaning up the chicken shed regularly, but during your arrival (July 2016), we did not have a caretaker on site for a little over a month. (We had someone stop by to regularly feeding and turning out the chickens but did not have someone there to do a thorough clean.) As of August 2016, we now again have a fulltime caretaker, and she routinely cleans out the entire shed and makes sure the 3 chickens are well taken care of.

quite relaxing stay

  • 4 of 5

We have stayed at the farmhouse 3 times now. Everytime it has been clean, quite and comfortable. The only problem we faced this last visit was there was only 1 roll of t.p. in the house. Rather problematic when I discovered this in the middle of the night.

Otherwise, the house is located by paved trails for biking and running. Every morning I would enjoy a 2 hour walk with my dogs and watching the humming birds/chickens while drinking coffee. A great place to relax but Mankato is also close by so we could do other things as well.

Peaceful Retreat!!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I greatly enjoyed this Farmhouse! We were looking for a quiet location away from the cities to unwind and unplug. This was exactly what we needed.

The kitchen was well equipped with everything anyone needs to make a great breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The claw foot tub was a refreshing experience. I turned on some music and just drifted away.

The only negative incident I had occurred when we arrived. The driveway was taken up by the caretakers car. When we came inside the house, one of the caretakers was rushing downstairs with what looked like a load of her personal laundry. She apologize as she passed me. Then she went downstairs and I could hear her and someone else arguing. Next thing you know, the smoke alarm started going off in their living quarters.......

All and all, this place was right up our alley. It was exactly what we needed. I would recommend this house to anyone looking for some time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday work.

Owner's Response: Hello and thank you for your kind words. Just to respond to the very unusual situation where you intersected one of the caretakers: we had a new hire in July, and she ran into problems changing out the house water filter for the first time (big filtration system in the basement), which slowed down the laundry/house turnover by over an hour. She was just about to leave (she was not living onsite and so was about to go home) which was why the car was parked by the door. She is a college student, so had brought her mom down to help her that first time, which I think ended up being a little stressful! She has since gotten things down and is quick and smooth with turning over the house. Usually guests never see or hear the caretaker, regardless of if they live on site or off site, unless they need help and directly contact/call whoever is taking care of the home at the time. Just wanted to address your note about this as it was such an unusual situation. :)
