Captains View is a cozy two bedroom beach house overlooking the Southern Bay of Cherokee Sound. The 14ft Boat and outboard is and optional high light . The front porch is definitely the most frequently used area of the home partly because of the view but also because it provides a shady, secluded, breezy spot to relax during your vacation. It is the perfect place to have your morning coffee, read a book in the afternoon, or retire after a long day of deep sea fishing.
The House is situated only a few footsteps away from the Long Dock where all types of activities can take place. There are many flat sand bars to walk on during the low tides; they are great places to find beautiful shells. Early tides bring fish including the allusive 'Bonefish' that room freely along the shallow bars of Southern Bay. 'The Long Dock ' and its uncounted wooden pieces have with stood many Hurricanes with sometimes little reconstruction. This dock is a pillar of the fishing town that once allowed for contact from the outside world .
All the community and its residents, as well as non residents , both old and young, have helped maintain its condition giving all who visit here a pleasent stay . There is loads of history is the Cherokee area so make sure to bring your hiking shoes and max the experience ! There are networks of uncharted paths from several hundred of years ago to be explored . Wooden boats and smacks building was an art done for years on the shore of the inner creek. You can learn more stories about this era by meeting friendly locals of Cherokee and hearing about the history of this place.
Guests have access to Watching Bay beach, on the Oceanside through a private development 'The Reserve at Watching bay '. This is all within walking distance, but the bicycles are great for this, and riding through town, . You can also rent a vehicle in Marsh Harbour beforehand to get to the house and sight see the island wide towns .
The uniqueness of this home is not only what it does have but it doesn’t have. By separating yourself from cable television and land line phones(which we do not have in the home!)you can find other ways to entertain yourselves. However, keep in mind that there is wi-fi internet access available so you can bring your business with you if you insist! We hope you will come enjoy a peaceful vacation with the ones you love at Captains View in Cherokee.
Absolutely the best location in Cherokee Sound for 1 or 2 couples or a small family. This clean and well appointed 2BR house is the closest property to the 'Long Dock' which appears to be the best known amenity of Cherokee Sound. The front porch and both BRs look out on the dock and the large sand flat it sits on. The water is shallow and the sand smooth making it ideal for kids, relaxed bathing, beach combing, or in our case, a bit of bone fishing. Bikes, kayaks and all accessories are stored neatly in the shed out back. The boat, if rented, is moored out front and is useful for accessing other close by flats and beaches.
This is a quiet little town with 1 store and a marina, both within easy walking distance. Plan to bring and cook your own meals in the tidy kitchen. Bring your own adult beverages. Pete's Pub is 10 minutes up the road if you want a break but you probably won't if well supplied.
The house is private and yet right in the center of town - center for visitors that is. The 200 meter long dock is the perfect seaside amenity and it feels like yours. The owner is local and was responsive to all requests. Perfect location for a quiet getaway. Did I say it was in the best location in town? It really is. We will be back!
We can't wait to return to the Captain's Nest in Cherokee. The gorgeous flats, beautiful sunsets, and bone fishing right out the front door. The people of Cherokee are surely the kindest and most helpful that we have met in our many travels throughout the Bahamas. The remodeled airport at Marsh Harbor is a stunning improvement. Upon arrival all basic provisions can be obtained at Maxwell's supermarket. The little "Island Bakery" is our favorite for coconut bread which makes the best French toast in the world, but don't forget the Johnnycake and sticky buns. Also our best recent find is the Fish House or "Skagg retail and wholesale seafood store" in Marsh Harbor ask locals for directions. They have all types of local fish as well as lobster and stone crab. There is packaged lobster for the return trip home. Jaime's Place in Marsh Harbor has the best cracked conch in the area. Glenn is a perfect host for your adventure at the Captain's Nest and has provided a lovely 2 bedroom, spotless accommodation with a small boat to truly explore Cherokee Sound. Night life is limited, but always includes our evening sunset walk on Long Dock with our favorite beverage. I have caught bonefish beside and off of Long Dock and have seen multiple big permit cruising along the dock in the evening, no takers yet. Many thanks to Glenn for sharing his wonderful beachfront home with us. We will return as soon as possible. Sincerely, Randy and Robyn R.
This little house was perfect for us (2 travelers). it was a lovely, simple bahama cottage, built by the owner's grandparents. very comfortable with ceiling fans (+ AC) in almost every room, cool tile floors, a well equipped kitchen and comfortable furniture, roomy bathroom, everything clean. also Wifi and wide screen tv. Glenn was very helpful and attentive, making an extra trip out to us when we had difficulty starting the boat motor (it was our fault -- we stood the gas can straight up and so the gas could not flow to the engine). Glenn also turned us on to a private beach which is a very short drive from the house. the settlement of cherokee is very quiet and charming. the cemetery is fascinating. one of us went out with a local fishing guide (garth albury) and saw a giant whale shark under the boat (as long as the boat and wider!). there is a large yard for kids, 2 sit-upon kayaks, 2 old bikes and a nice patio with table and chairs. shelling at low tide was my favorite activity. the closest place to eat is Pete's Pub, about 3 miles away (down a very rutted road, but well worth it). other favorite places to eat were the Jib Room at the Marsh Harbour Marina (their weekly BBQ is a must -- amazing music too) a local place called Jamie's in Marsh Harbor, and the bar at the Sand Piper at Schooner's Bay. we also took the ferry to Elbow Cay and had lunch and a swim at the Hope Town Harbour Lodge. (see their website for pictures of the pool and beach). well, i'm straying from my main review -- Glenn's house was perfect and we recommend it enthusiastically! sherry and ruth
We rented this house for our friends (2 couples) while we stayed next door at the Seaview villas. There was 8 people in our group so this turned out perfect! We loved using the kayaks to explore the gorgeous waters and nothing beats waking up early for a sunrise yoga session on the beach 5 steps away from your house! The owner was extremely accommodating to us during our stay. He emailed periodically to check on us and make sure we had everything we needed or if he could recommend any activities for us to venture off to. I highly recommended renting this cozy beach cottage. Very clean and It's perfect for 2 couples or for a small family. And the futons in the living room could also be a bed if needed. We hope to rent this again in the near future! Five stars!
Yes it's true, Bonefish practically swim past the front door of this cute well restored and updated Bahamian cottage.
The cottage is exactly as depicted by the owner in the pictures, very clean, comfortable and functional. We stayed here 2 weeks and enjoyed every minute talking to the residents of Cherokee, using the kayaks provided with the house and of course fly fishing.
Cherokee is a quiet settlement a little off the beaten path, the locals were to a person welcoming and friendly. The grocery store in town is very well stocked compared to most Bahamian island stores. If you want/need beer or alcohol pick it up in Marsh Harbour - there is none for sale in Cherokee.
Petes Pub in Little Harbour, open Thurs-Sun while we were there, is about 4 miles away and provides the only place to eat and drink nearby, great fun and fun crowd mix of locals and boaters.
We would stay here again and recommend it strongly to anyone wanting to escape the "resort scene".
After spending a wonderful week on a sailboat in the Sea of Abaco with a group of Boy Scouts we were looking for a place to spread out and unwind for a few days before our flight back to Colorado. We spent four days chasing bonefish, snorkeling for conch, playing in the rough surf on the Altlantic side beach and eating fresh caught snapper.
The kitchen has all the basics for meal prep including an assortment of spices. There is an outside shower to rinse off the saltwater as well as a shower with hot and cold water in the bath. The entire floor of the cottage is tiled so it is easy to sweep up the sand that you will track in.
The best part of this property however is the location. It is just across the footbridge from the hub of town, the beautiful Cherokee long dock. You can get information from the locals and your fellow tourists on where to fish, boat and play. We gave the dock the nickname of "Google Dock" during our stay as the information we were able to get up there from casual conversation was better than anything we could find on the web.
I would give a strong reccomendation of Glenn's cottage for and travelers who like to spend time out on the sand and water. If you are looking at these reviews you probably already realize that Cherokee is quiet little village in a spectacular location and you'll be happy here.
