Monarch is a great skiing location because it’s often one of the least crowded ski areas in all of Colorado & it often has some of the best snow in the state! About Blair & Lori Decker

In 1982, after patiently searching for 10 years, my parents found & purchased 80 pristine acres bordered by thousands of BLM acreage. It was their dream to build a home where their grandchildren could visit & experience some of God's amazing creations. So in 1991, after my father retired from the military and his civilian career, he & my mom & her brother spent two years lovingly building this beautiful 4300 square foot custom home. Five years ago, I was blessed to purchase the property from my parents & I began updating it with some wonderful amenities that somehow make this great property even better.

My family & I love getting up to the property for our vacations. Some of our favorites include preparing big meals together, enjoying the crisp mornings with a cup of coffee out on one of the patios, hiking the back acreage, spotting the beautiful animals, getting a great game going or having a movie night, enjoying a beautiful fire in the living room or in the brand new fire pit,....the memories & precious moments go on and on. So, in 2013 we decided to begin sharing this amazing place as a vacation rental home & now we love returning to read the great notes in the guest book where we get to hear about some of the favorite experiences our guests have on this incredible property. We greatly look forward to having you & your family here to do the same.

Blair & Lori Decker purchased this house in 1991

Beautiful house, lovely and quiet setting

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in this beautiful home, and it was very enjoyable for our large family gathering. Blair and Lori are welcoming and accommodating, and making arrangements for the trip was easy and pleasant. The house is absolutely beautiful, clean and well furnished, and extremely comfortable. Lots of space!! The surrounding land is beautiful and very private, and not difficult to get to. We did some walking, sledding and snowshoeing on the property, and skied at Monarch. The outdoor fire pit and indoor fireplaces were great for warming up after these activities. We spent a lot of time inside too, reading, playing games, and just having fun together as our family gathered. Cooking meals in the large, clean and well furnished kitchen is easy and fun. The property is very well cared for, and the listing description is accurate. The owners provided excellent customer service, including much needed baby equipment. I recommend this house!

Well kept property in a lovely rural setting

  • 5 of 5

The Deckers were wonderful to work with. They were responsive to requests for baby-friend equipment (highchair, gates, crib, pack-n-play). They obviously put a lot of thought into making their home a hospitable, beautiful and functional space for guests. A spacious kitchen with plenty of cookware for groups lessened the food prep hassle for our group of 15. The owners even included little details such as a welcome basket, and an innovative picnic caddy that was especially nice to use considering all the outside eating areas.

This space was a treat for our family in many ways: young cousins who don't often see each other spent hours playing inside and out; everyone enjoyed mountain hikes; a few of us got to see elk in the meadow. This place is ideal if you want a private location and your primary objective is spending time together. However, if you want easy access to entertainment and restaurants, this may not be the best choice for you.

A perfect place for our family reunion

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for this wonderful week. Our family enjoyed every bit of it. This was our first reunion in 5 years! And this was the perfect place for it. We deeply appreciated the kid & family friendly set-up –cribs, back pack, gates. It was obvious that this is a place and a home that you love. A pleasure for us!

We are already looking forward to return visits

  • 5 of 5

We have visited many places in Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming - This place is our top pick due to its tranquility and solitude, while being close enough to Salida and its restaurants, shops, as well as close access to world class rafting and trout fishing, and on top of that you can experience all these in the same day that's totally insane! Loved the house, it was just the right welcoming ambiance and amazing experience we were hoping to have in our family vacation. There were no disappointments. Lori treated us like valued guests and we found everything not only met but exceeded our expectations. We highly recommend this listing and are already looking forward to return visits.

Located North off Highway 50 and the Arkansas River on CR 12. On property or within a short drive experience: The ROYAL GORGE - It's Scenic Train Rides & Helitours; Some of our country's BEST White Water Rafting & Fly Fishing; ATV/4-Wheeling Adventures; Horseback Riding; Zip-Lining; Kayaking; Rock Biking; Big & Small Game Hunting; Mountain Climbing & Rappelling; Skiing or Cat tours @ Monarch Ski Resort, Skyline Drive, Colorado Prison Museum, Tunnel Road, The Gold Mine Rock Shop,...& ENDLESS STUNNING Sightseeing!

Towns that are just a short drive:

-Texas Creek: Named for a Texas cattle rancher, this fly-fishing and ATV hotspot is loaded with scenic vistas and wildlife viewing opportunities.

-Cotopaxi: This former whistle-stop town is nestled along the Arkansas River and is the perfect spot to stay to experience the Royal Gorge Regional activities & natural attractions.

-Howard: The Arkansas River runs through this little Valley town, drawing rafters, kayakers and fishermen. The beautiful forested area features horseback riding, hiking, ATV tours and golfing.

-Parkdale: Near the Royal Gorge makes it a popular base camp for visitors with campers or who want to tent-it. The area is the gateway to whitewater rafting and Bighorn Sheep Canyon.

-Coaldale: A bustling mining town and popular touring stop for opera stars in the late 1800s, remote Coaldale is surrounded by towering peaks and is known for its secluded camping opportunities.

- Bighorn Sheep Canyon: Long known as a gateway into the Rockies, Highway 50 divides Cañon City as it runs west through the towering
rock walls of the Arkansas River Canyon. This beautiful canyon has been dubbed “Bighorn Canyon,” and hosts a thriving population of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, Colorado’s state animal. The majestic animals are often seen on both sides of the river from convenient turn-outs throughout the canyon.

There are thousands of square miles of public land and wilderness for all types of hiking, rock climbing and mountain biking. There are fishing trails up and down the river and you can follow the deer and bighorn sheep trails, or bushwhack to your heart’s content.

The Arkansas River is one of the most rafted whitewater rivers in the world. The River’s popularity springs from the number, size and technical nature of its rapids, the length of season, length of river available for rafting, and the unsurpassed beauty. Outfitters say the Arkansas offers more excitement per mile than any other river in the west. From gentle stretches, on up to Class Five rapids, and the awesome Royal Gorge, there is something for everyone, families and thrill-seekers alike. We are close to all the major rafting companies on the Arkansas River.

* Salida Golf Course

* Buena Vista Golf Course

* Leadville Golf Course

* Rocky Mountain Mini Golf

Professional fly-fishing people tell us we have one of the best stretches of the Arkansas River. From mid-April through mid-May, an amazing caddis hatch produces incredible dry-fly action. Brown and Rainbow Trout predominate, ranging from small fish, up to 22 inches long and maybe longer! You can catch-and-keep fish for miles up and down the river.

Make sure you look for the Big Horn Sheep as you drive up or down the river, watch/listen to the males crack their heads together during the rut.

Many university classes come to this area because the geology is laid bare in the canyon for all to see.

ATVs / 4-Wheeling Adventures

The Texas Creek National Off Highway Vehicle Recreation Area, and nearby BLM and U.S. Forest Service public land, opens hundreds of miles of trails to those who want to explore the backcountry with an ATV or jeep.

Skiing & Snowboarding

Monarch Mountain, located in South Central Colorado, is what you expect from a real Colorado ski area. Abundant natural snow (350+ inches) and friendly people are two of our strongest attributes. You can walk from your car right to the lifts, prices are reasonable, and the runs flow naturally back to the base area.

Nothing brings out the kid in us all more than climbing onto a snowmobile and revving that engine once or twice. Add to the excitement a few feet of sparkling Colorado powder, and you have a recipe for more fun than you can shake a stick at.

Snowcat tours

Great powder, spectacular views, 1,000 plus acres of expert terrain, steeps, trees, cliffs, and bowls – that’s Monarch Mountain’s snowcat terrain. Considered some of the best snowcat skiing in Colorado, guests enjoy skiing/riding in closely spaced trees, variable snow conditions and extremely steep slopes.
