As children in Connecticut, learned to love salt water/beaches...After living around the country for several years, (san francisco, boston, seattle) moved to austin and decided we were there to stay. After a few years and many trips to the Rockport area, decided it would be cost effective to have a home there. First house was burned down by juveniles after 35 years; immediately started to rebuild what you see today. We have been married for 54 years; have 2 sons (twins), one daughter and two granddaughters.
Philip Almquist/Valerie Almquist purchased this house in 2013
Love of Salt Water, Sun, fishing, boating, lower Summer temperatures, higher Winter temperatures on the coast. Excellent Birding. Very Casual Life Style. Small town environment. Access to Golf Courses, Many Restaurants
If you are an early riser you will be treated to a breathtaking sunrise over the water. Relax with a cup of coffee outside your bedroom door, or go back to sleep on the Mexican hammock. Mullet are already jumping, waiting to be caught for bait later in the day. Porch swing on the first deck
Quarter of a mile up the road our special breakfast taco place with the locals already lined up at the door.
It is fun to get the binoculars and catch a glimpse of the dolphins swimming after the shrimpboats—hoping to catch some scraps from their morning haul.
The shops open at 10, lots of art galleries and mom and pops. The HEB (our local food store ) has something for everyone, tho with so many restaurants in town it is hard to think about cooking. Speaking of cooking, our completely outfitted kitchen with its granite counter tops and custom cabinets, farm sink, is a culinary dream. We believe in leaving some staples there, spices, sugar, flour items in the pantry and a refrigerator with some more essentials.
Our area is known for its fishing; redfish, trout, fishing guides abound;typically the evening meal is the result of the day's fishing. For those less adventurous, our long 500 ft dock, with two T heads, very often brings in a big one. Others may want to wade out in the shallow water to take their chances. One must watch out for the dolphins; they can get close enough to steal your stringer. Being on a dead end street is perfect for children. They can play on the sandy beach, splash in the clear water, or collect sea shells and hermit crabs. We advise people to wear water shoes. While most of the bottom is sandy, there may be oyster shells = hence the name Shell Ridge Rd:
Our house is very comfortable, don’t have to worry about wet bathing suits or sandy feet. There is a big flat screen tv in the living room, that the children love to monopolize, so we have several others in bedrooms that they can use.
When renting a home for a getaway one of the most important aspects to concider that most disregard is a excellent owner of the home. Philip and Val are amazing owners who make their renters comfort and experience top priority.
I can't thank them enough for giving my family exactly what we needed after an emotional year. Let me explain. My family (parents, brothers, their wives, my daughter & husband) have an annual tradition of renting a home in Rockport so we can all stay together once a year. I had Tara reserved since early 2016 and we were all very excited. In June we lost my father and thought about canceling our trip, but it's not what my father would have wanted. After he passed our schedules changes and so did the dates we would be able to travel. Phillip worked with me to rearrange our travel dates and made life a little less stressful during that difficult time.
Once we arrived at Tara it didn't disappoint. The views are incredible and we can all vouch for the comfort of the home. After a very long emotional year this was just what we needed to completely relax and enjoy each other's company. Our favorite spot was the deck in the early morning hours. Amazing sunrises and great photo opportunity while drinking your morning coffee.
The fishing was great with lots of trout and gafftop. Even one nice black drum. More than enough keepers for us to have a fish fry/crab boil. Best spot to set your crab traps is at the end of the pier off to the left. Really nice big blue crab!
Thanks again Phillip and Val! I really appreciate y'all!
This is the third year taking our family (kids and grandkids) to "Tara" for the week, and what a week it was. Our younger daughter and her family drove all the way from North Carolina to be here. Once again, wade fishing out the front door was excellent. We normally catch plenty of trout and reds. This year was the year of the flounder. 21 keepers to be exact. Enough for a fish fry and still more for the freezer. Rockport shopping, according to the girls, was fantastic. Views from either of the decks were spectacular. Facing the east we got the stunning morning sunrises, but not the hot west sunsets. This is where we would find 93 year old great-grand mom. Kudos to the Almquists for installing an elevator (lift). Sure made moving great-grand mom up and down easier. Did we enjoy our vacation here? We're set for another great week next year. Thanks, Phil and Val.
This property is the best we have EVER stayed in.
The view, fishing, restaurants, are fabulous and the home in/out is gorgeous
We have been renting annually from Phil and Val for 20+ years. They are wonderful to work with, and they have really outdone themselves with this new home, rebuilt on the same great location as the original ground level cottage. We are getting ready for our 2014 visit, the 2nd in this home. Our grown children will be coming for a few days with our almost 5 year old grand-twins. Am so looking forward to sharing all that Rockport and this home have to enjoy. The pier, swimming in the warm bay water in front of the house, shopping for souvenirs in Rockport, driving over to the Big Tree on Goose Island, the Maritime Museum, Fulton Harbor, a short drive to the ferry and Port Aransas. The Wildlife Preserve is a fairly short drive and a fun day trip as well. All these things we did when our children were small, and, as oldsters, we still love Rockport and Shell Ridge Road just as much as ever. It's a wonderful vacation location - you can relax in the air-conditioning, sit on the balcony and enjoy the view, or take short drives to a wide variety of sights, shops, and activities. It's one of our favorite places to be!
Got to stay at Tara twice this year - August (when I really needed a va-cay!) and September (when I had a little more energy!).
In August, the quiet peaceful location of the house and the many options for relaxing with a fabulous view (LOVE the hammock on the second story balcony!) made it a perfect place to relax for a week. The kitchen is well-stocked, the master bath is almost spa-like, and the wi-fi was nice when I occasionally had to check back in to real life.
In September, Rockport's attractions took over! The aquarium, the museums, and the parks are all fabulous. The house is in such a convenient location to get to and from everything you could want in Rockport.
The new house is really terrific, as are the owners! Can't imagine a more perfect place to stay for a Rockport vacation.
We have enjoyed this beautiful location for approximately 20 years, beginning with the cozy, rustic one story cabin, which unfortunately burned. In its place is the "new Tara." The newly constructed home is magnificent, complete with all modern amenities, including granite countertops, tile & wood floors, etc. We love to fish & bird watch, and there was an abundance of both this week before Christmas 2013. From the pier we caught redfish, black drum, & trout. We saw an incredible osprey overhead, a peregrine falcon, a cluster of roseate spoonbills wading literally feet from the bank of Aransas Bay, in front of the home. We shopped along the strand in downtown Rockport, ate at our favorite restaurants, Latitude, Los Comales, Cap'n Bennies (oysters on half shell), and Moondogs, rode bikes across Copano Bay bridge to Goose Island, & watched every glorious sunrise & sunset from the balconies. We highly recommend this property to anyone who loves the Texas Coast. Cam & Mary Wilson, Boerne, TX
