Overview

Old Fort House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 8) Easy access to Asheville & Lake Lure.

We named our mountain home “Almost Heaven” because when we are there, that is exactly what it feels like to us. At 3,000 feet in elevation, we are close to the stars at night, to the clouds by day and we are witness to gorgeous sunrises and sunsets all year long. When the summer heat is burning up the low lands we have fresh, cool breezes and even sweater weather in the evenings. We look out 40 miles to Mt. Mitchell in the north, ten mountain ranges to where the sun sets in the west and 60 miles to a flat line in the south. We are surrounded by nature, astronomy and meteorology, yet we are a short 35 minute drive to Biltmore House and the excellent restaurants of downtown Asheville, and 20 minutes from Black Mountain and its quaint shops, restaurants, and gigantic grocery stores. We hear the wind in the leaves and catch the sweet smell of Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel in the springtime; we pick wild blackberries in the summer and listen to songbirds all day. We frequently encounter deer, wild turkey and even bobcats, yet we live in a modern, luxurious home with a gourmet kitchen, satellite TV, instant hot water, wonderful beds and mattresses, and windows everywhere to frame the beauty that is all around us. Our home is built for both togetherness and privacy: the family room has a monumental stone fireplace surrounded by leather sofas, the covered side porch serves as an outdoor dining area, the basement offers ping-pong and Foosball tables and three-quarters of the home is surrounded by decks and rockers – while every one of the four bedrooms has its own private porch for personal conversation or quiet reading time away from the larger group. It is the best of all worlds: natural, yet very civilized; remote yet convenient; private yet communal. It is Almost Heaven. We would love to share it with you!

The Perfect Setting For a Weekend Away

  • 5 of 5

I cannot write enough positive things about our amazing weekend at Almost Heaven. It was just the perfect setting for our girls getaway weekend--- so beautiful and peaceful. That VIEW! We couldn't get over it. It will take your breath away every time. Annette was SO wonderful in her communication, clear directions, and suggestions of things to see and do in the area.

It is an intense (but kind of fun!) drive up the mountain roads to the home, but certainly doable, even though all of us just had front-wheel drive. Definitely recommend trying to get there in daylight if you can -- it's easier to find! But also know that the trek up the mountain is worth it for that view! Also definitely recommend doing your grocery shopping in your hometown or before you get the cabin and packing a cooler --- bring food and just stay put at the cabin. It would be quite a journey to have to "run to the store" for a small thing. We did get to explore Black Mountain for lunch (about 20-25 min drive) and enjoyed that! Also appreciated the suggested to check out Standing Rock Falls within the Gateway Mountain premises; it was lovely!

The home was so accommodating and comfortable. We had 8 women staying, and all had a bed spot and plenty of space! We ate every meal and drank coffee/wine out on the amazing back deck. We watched the sunset and watch storms roll by. Once night came, we saw more stars than us city dwellers ever get to see--even some shooting stars! To say we had a great time is kind of an understatement. It was kind of perfect! .My only wish is that we could have stayed longer!!!

Trying to see if I can now get my extended family to take a trip up to the mountains next year...might have to use this home again:) A beautiful rental, and one of the best VRBO home's I've ever stayed in. Highly recommend! Thank you to the Morgans for sharing their home!

Not to be missed

  • 5 of 5

We had an amazing experience staying here. On arrival, thought the view from the front porch was amazing until we turned around and saw the view from the back deck. Took my breath away! Just amazing to watch the sunrises and sunsets, watch storms roll in and out and we were lucky enough to see rainbows on two different nights!

Besides the view, the house is fabulous. So comfortable, inviting, well stocked and easy to manage. The beds are A++ (one of us said she was tempted to take her mattress home with her-she did not ;). Even though it's a bit of a drive into Asheville and surrounding areas, we we so glad to be somewhere quiet and relaxing. We recommend bringing supplies for several meals as just relaxing around the house is a vacation in itself.

The house is in a great location and away from the hustle and bustle of Asheville. Despite the heat down below, we were able to sleep with the windows open with cool breezes in the middle of July.

We can't say enough good things about this home and its wonderful owners who were so easy to work with and so gracious from start to finish. You won't be disappointed if you are lucky enough to stay here!

We had a lovely Christmas and a wonderful time. Your cabin was PERFECT! We had four couples and two babies. Don't hesitate to rent this beautiful Cabin. We can't wait to visit again. It was worth every penny.

Great views, Great house and Great value!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed this past weekend with friends and were very happy with everything. The views can't be beat, the house is beautifully laid out with each bedroom having a terrace and view and it is located close to Asheville, Lake Lure and some fantastic waterfalls. This is an excellent value for the price and although my friends and I have been going someplace different each year for the past 6 years, we will probably be back next year.

Wow! Amazing Views!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this house based solely on the views - it was just my husband and I and we didn't need such a large home. We were not disappointed when we arrived! The home is beautiful and very comfortable . The views were unbelievable. The sunsets were breathtaking. We would definitely recommend this home for larger groups - we did not take advantage of everything that it had to offer.

Not Almost Heaven, It WAS Heaven

  • 5 of 5

The house was huge and the views were breathtaking. Our party of 4 enjoyed our time at this beautiful home, we even took in a few games of Fuzzball and PingPong in the lower level. By far our favorite activity was sitting on the large deck every night and watching the amazing sun sets and star gazing. There is nothing like be at the top of a 3,000 ft mountain. We took in the Biltmore, downtown Asheville and Chimney Rock (which is very close by). We didn't want to leave but plan on coming back in autumn to see the fall foliage. The bedroom on the first floor was perfect for one of the people in our party with knee issues. There is so much more to do than what we had time for, we know we only scratched the surface of this beautiful part of the country.

Annette was a pleasure to deal with and gave very accurate instructions as well as tips.

10 out of 10 I would recommend staying in their lovely home.
