Downtown Waynesville (east of Maggie Valley and a short drive from Black Bear Lodge) is a vibrant town with fine shops, galleries, cafes and restaurants, tree-lined brick sidewalks, and many popular events.

Asheville is a little further east of Waynesville and has the closest airport.

The Biltmore (an 8,000 acre estate in Asheville with beautiful gardens and very nice restaurants) is very popular.

Wondreful place!

  • 4 of 5

Black Bear lodge was wonderful. A lot of high end touches. Very comfortable bed and nice linens. My kids slept on the roll away beds and they too were very comfortable with special sheets. It is very private and quiet. There is no stove but there is enough to cook meals.

Beautiful views and beautiful cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in July and just loved the cabin - the privacy, the tasteful decor, the decks, the cleanliness. We would definitely stay again if we come back! This was just perfect for 2 people. Everything was exactly as Ana said it would be and the information she provided was so helpful in getting to the cabin and things to do in the area. We enjoyed Maggie Valley with its restaurants, the Old Grey Mare fruit stand, and driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It wasn't far to Asheville where we saw the Biltmore and went zip lining. Tons to do and we simply couldn't get to it all but thoroughly enjoyed our stay and managed to fit in some relaxation as well.

Heaven on Earth!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved the view from the front yard. We never got to see the sun rise or set, but the daily view was breath-taking. ANA is awesome. It was a last minute vacation and she made everything work out for us to stay. House is decorated so adorable inside. We would stay again in a New York minute!

Great Secluded Hideaway

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I spent 5 relaxing nights at the Black Bear Lodge hideaway in May 2016 for an anniversary getaway. Ana was very easy to work with and responded to my questions immediately. Location was excellent for hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains and The Smoky Mountains. Having an entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway so close was convenient for traveling to Waynesville and Smoky Mountains National Park. The Biltmore in Asheville was less than an hour drive and Maggie Valley restaurants were excellent.

The Lodge was as described. Had no problem locating it. Since the upper floors are not finished, the lower level was quiet. Furnishing were comfortable and the kitchen appliances worked great. Glad there is a Keurig coffee machine. Very nice assortment of cooking appliances. Did not use the outdoor grill.

Since the lower level is not designed to be a separate living space once the upper floors are finished, the layout is not ideal. The lighting is poor and all the switches are located together by the utility room. The bedroom is open to the great room and the blower on the heater is loud. Since the heater is next to the TV it is annoying when trying to listen to programs. I know we weren't there to watch television but after 10 miles of hiking everyday we are to tired to go out at night and just wanted to relax. I would have given The Black Bear Lodge a 5 star rating if there was better TV reception, (very poor satellite reception) and WIFI. The driveway was a challenge I accepted each morning. An AWD or 4Wheel Drive vehicle is recommended although the RWD Chevy Equinox I rented made it up every time but I had to be very aggressive. My wife said she would have never made it. There is a second driveway but we never used it.

The view was amazing and the lower and upper decks very relaxing. I recommend Black Bear Lodge for anyone who wants to get away and have great access to amazing views and hiking trails.

Owner's Response: Dear Steve, It saddens me that you gave me 4 stars since we have only ever received 5 stars in the past. I wished you had called me because the things you mentioned could of all been resolved. First of all there are two driveways, you said you never used the second one. On the paperwork it mentions that the second one is less steep, so you could of taken that one instead. As for the lights, we have extra lamps in the owners closet and the cleaning lady could of left more out for you. No one has ever said it needed more lighting but that would be no problem to correct. You mentioned that the floor plan would change when the rest of the cabin was finished. That is not the case. We have that as a separate unit and will stay that way in the future. I was surprised you said the television reception was not good. We have never experienced that however it is a satellite dish so if the weather is bad that could happen and we have no control over that. As for the WiFi we don't have it and it mentions it on the website. The reason we don't have it is because in the mountains the WiFi is very slow. We also like to be unplug and get away while on vacation. You mentioned the heater (fireplace) was loud. If you had called me I could of resolved that right away. There is a setting and if the renter before you turned it up it would be loud. We could set it at a lower level and it would of been fine. I know you had a great time but I like things to be perfect. We would love for you and your family to come back and offer you a discount, as we offer that to all our repeat renters.Thank you for staying at Black Bear Lodge.
