About the property

4 Bedrooms, 3 Bathrooms, Sleeps 8

Stretching out between the cities of Port Elizabeth and East London lies the Sunshine Coast, a land of small towns, pristine beaches, beautiful rivers, and warm-hearted people. It is aptly called the Sunshine Coast, because this coastal strip has more sunshine hours than any other part of South Africa.

1 Milkwood is a secure executive home in the exclusive suburb of West Beach in the coastal town of Port Alfred. Situated in the heart of the Sunshine Coast in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa. It is offered for short term rental, and is ideal for family holidays, traveling project teams, or touring groups. A refreshing alternative to cramped hotel rooms and restrictive B&B's. A home from home, it comfortably sleeps up to 8 guests. It has its own private garden with many of the protected Milkwood trees and the beautiful Clivias which flower early spring. The indigenous bird-life is prolific. It is in a prominent position and yet is secluded from neighbors.

The kitchen is well-equipped with reverse osmosis water purifier, full sized fridge/freezer with ice maker, dishwasher, top loader washing machine, tumble drier, microwave, gas/electric stove, kettle, toaster and plenty of crockery and cutlery. There is a dining area with seating for eight and a sea view while you dine.

It is ideally located for a summer or winter holiday. In summer, it is well situated on the ridge with gentle sea breezes and yet only a 500m stroll to the only safe swimming, Blue Flag beach in Port Alfred. In winter it is cosy with sunlight streaming in for most of the day and affords some of the best whale watching opportunities from the comfort of the lounge, kitchen, dining area or any of the bedrooms. All four bedrooms have a sea view and some have a view of the golf course too.

The house has open plan living areas both upstairs and downstairs, with 4 bedrooms leading off on the wings. The accommodation offers an en-suite king-size bedroom downstairs, two queen-size bedrooms upstairs, one en-suite and the other shares a bathroom with a fourth bedroom with two single beds. All have plenty of cupboard space. The three bathrooms all have showers, baths and toilets and there are two separate guest toilets on each floor. Quality linen, towels and hospitality items are supplied. There is a double garage and parking bay for a third car. Complimentary WiFi Internet and DSTV are provided.

The house is serviced lightly Monday to Saturday and on request on Sunday.

Please bring your own beach towels.

About Jeannine Evans

We lived in 1Milkwood for almost five years with our children commuting to Grahamstown every day to attend school. At the end of 2012 we relocated to Grahamstown to make our children's lives simpler by being closer to their schools.

After a year of standing empty, we have decided to open our home up to guests so that they too can experience the serenity and beauty of the Sunshine Coast.

Jeannine Evans purchased this house in 2008

Why Jeannine Evans chose Port Alfred

We felt this was probably one of the best properties in Port Alfred for a fabulous panoramic view of the Indian Ocean. The house is completely open plan with double sized bedrooms leading off the open areas and lends itself to family living.

What makes this house unique

Every single room in the house has a sea view, including the kitchen and dining room.

Beautiful house in a great location

  • 4 of 5

It is a large house with stunning sea views. Lots of privacy in your own garden. The House is well protected. It has 8 spacious sleeping places and 3 bathrooms. Too bad the jacuzzi was not working. We were in May and thereby it was cold in the House. Definitely worth repeating.

The seaside town of Port Alfred is the most sought-after holiday destination on Route 72. It is situated on the Sunshine Coast which is aptly named for the most sunny days anywhere in South Africa. Known for its wonderful temperate climate, endless pristine beaches and friendly village atmosphere, this small coastal town between East London and Port Elizabeth boasts a world renowned reclaimed marina, glorious surf, magnificent deep sea and river fishing (the Kowie River can be navigated by boat for 23km inland) and the laid-back lifestyle so beloved by all visitors, many of whom become permanent residents. Boats can be launched at the Small Boat Harbour in the Marina and deep sea fishing or river expeditions can be arranged.

For golf lovers, there is The Royal Port Alfred Golf Club course which was designed in the early 1900s by Dr WH Atherstone and is within walking distance from the house.

There is adequate food shopping with a Pick ‘n Pay in town and Rosehill Mall boasts a small Woolworth Food store Super Spar, cinemas and much more. There are numerous restaurants available to eat out including some with a wonderful view along the river or at the water’s edge.

Magnificent beaches, horse riding, bird watching, hikes, deep sea fishing, outward bound adventures, scuba diving, malaria free game parks, elephant excursions, zip-line adventures, etc, etc are available for daily entertainment.

The district hosts a number of Festivals including the National Arts Festival which is the world's second largest arts festival (end June/beginning July in Grahamstown for about 11 days), numerous Garden Festivals (The Open Garden of Bedford being the highlight), The Bathurst Agricultural Show (in April) and the Bathurst Country Affair in October which has a whole host of different fun events such as an Annual Waitron Race, the Soapbox / Kaskar Derby, The Pineapple Throwing Competition, The Horse / Pony Amazing Adventure Race, The Charity Walk and three course Chef meals (who fly in from all over the country to participate) as well as wine-tastings and more.
