About The Jernigan Family
We are the Jernigans. Our extended family has owned and operated Renwick House since 1978, along with several other family-owned rental properties. Grandpa and Grandma raised the family in Alexandria, VA, and we all currently reside in the Washington, DC area and the San Francisco, CA area.
The Jernigan Family purchased this Farmhouse in 1978
Why The Jernigan Family chose Bar Harbor
Our family purchased the 29-acre property in 1978 from a Bar Harbor resident named George Renwick (hence the name 'Renwick House'). The house was built in the 1860's and sits on a beautiful piece of land conveniently near Bar Harbor but away from the bustle of town.
What makes this Farmhouse unique
- 1/2 Mile walk to Acadia National Park (1 mile to Thunder Hole, 2 miles to Sand Beach) - 4.5 Miles to downtown Bar Harbor - Gorgeous sunsets over the back meadow

House was great
The house was great, It is an older home and really beautiful. The house was centrally located and my family really enjoyed it. The house was well maintained and very clean, the house could use some minor repairs mainly the front porch while it was great to hang out there it has some rotten boards on it and a broken one. That was the only problem and why I gave it 4 stars.
The porch boards had aged. Winters on this salt aired getaway have made their imprint over the years, some more charming than others. We are always looking at upgrades to make the best atmosphere possible.
The front porch is fully repaired for spring 2018!
Great Location close to park
Wonderful restful time with family in comfortable home. Loads to do in the area.
Wonderful home base to enjoy Acadia and Mount Desert Island
Renwick House is a charming farm house tucked in the middle of Acadia and perfect for our family. We stayed in late May and avoided the throngs of people during peak season. It is a quick 5 minute ride to Bar Harbor for groceries or shopping, but you can walk to the end of the street and be on beautiful Otter Cove/Otter Cliffs. It was a perfect home base to enjoy all of the hiking and sights in Acadia and Mount Desert Island. It is an old farm house, so no surprises, but it was very clean, well maintained and provisioned, including supplies for your own Lobster Boil. We hope to be back soon!
Like Being in Grandma's comforting old house
If you are looking for a real Maine home to stay in, The Jernigan House is for you. Caroline has made sure it has the perfect homey touch, with all the supplies you need. Unlike other properties we've rented, this home feels like a home when you're in it. As my husband said "It feels like a great big hug from Grandma" because the old time charm and feel. Beds are comfortable, towels are plush, kitchen is well stocked with supplies, (even have a great big pot to cook your Lobster that you should get from Parson's) house is clean, Internet is strong enough to stream Netflix (we brought our Chromecast device), front porch is inviting, property is natural and pretty (bet it's gorgeous in the summer with all the flowers), kitchen table is perfect for enjoying coffee on the mornings it's too cool to sit outside, short drive to town and to Otter Creek Cove and Acadia Park Loop Drive. Although not a good road to bike ride into town, it's good for biking right into the park. (Island Explorer will stop for you right in front of the house). Great home for families with lots of play area and woods to explore. Star gazing at night is amazing and sitting on the front porch in the morning is delightful. Trail to Gorham MTN within walking distance as is the trail down to Otter Cove. Everything is as the site describes but it can never describe the peace you'll find staying in this home. We will definitly be back!
We had a good time at Renwick House renewing memories of being there years ago.
The property was clean. Since our visit years ago the addition of linens, washer/dryer and fans was a big plus. We would have liked our cell phones to work but got along without phone service. We hope to go back again in the future
Unfortunately, there has never been cell phone service at this location. However, recent cellular tower developments have aided some services, occasionally...
Great stay as always
We've been staying at this property for years. It's a perfect, rustic fit for our family. Close enough to Acadia park to bike or even hike from the home (or a short drop off at a trailhead from a family member). The house has rustic feel to it; expect to see the same furniture and decor from years ago. That said, it has a quaint charm to it and has served our family well for many years. Other pros: cabin on the property allows for a second family group with some privacy, washer/dryer added recently was a game changer (had to go to town in the past to do laundry), backyard area mowed to create a grilling and chilling space, and internet now available to allow for area research, day planning and staying in touch. Other cons: no cellular service at the house (AT&T or Verizon), hot water heaters aren't sized for a family taking back-to-back showers, no dishwasher, no TV channels available (bring a Roku or Apple TV to use with the DSL internet), internet isn't tremendously fast (but is workable).
4.5 miles south of Bar Harbor at 175 Otter Cliff Rd, an easy one mile walk to Acadia National Park (Ocean Drive/ Park Loop Road), near the spectacular Otter Cliffs. Thunder Hole and Sand Beach are within a 1.5 mile walk (7 miles by car). The park boundary is a half mile away, and the house sits by a one-acre field with mountain views and surrounded by our 28 acres of woods. During summer months the Island Explorer, Free Island Shuttle, runs conveniently by the house.
