About Jennifer or Steve

Steve and Jennifer are married with 3 grown children. Steve worked as an endodontist for 37 years in Baltimore, and Jennifer taught first grade for 25 years in Baltimore County Public Schools. We now live on Nantucket and in Bozeman, Montana. We spend our winter days skiing and our summer days hiking mountains. We are equally active fishing, biking, and boating on Nantucket. We are deeply bonded to our friends, family, and love of nature. Watching seals frolic in the ocean, identifying a beautiful bird or favorite plant, and seeing a herd of elk cross our land brings us tremendous joy.

Jennifer or Steve purchased this house in 2010

Why Jennifer or Steve chose Nantucket

The Polpis Farmhouse was purchased by Jennifer's family in 1968. They maintained the house for over 40 years. During that time, the house saw multiple weddings, births of grandchildren, large family gatherings, and summer fun with neighbors and friends. It was the place where everyone learned to swim, water ski, sail, and to play flashlight tag at night. Our first jobs were here on Nantucket, and our best memories were here in this house. In 2010 Jennifer and Steve purchased the Polpis Farmhouse from her family.

What makes this house unique

The house has a unique history. It was built in 1804 as a tavern for Nantucket whaling men. Later it became a hay and dairy farm, and the dining room section was added. When Jennifer and Steve purchased the house, it was in need of TLC. We completely gutted the house down to the studs and increased the size of the house in 2011. We worked very hard to preserve the historical charm of the house as we brought the Polpis Farmhouse up to estate level. The house has a modern feel and is decorated with a combination of early American antiques blended with modern comfortable furniture. It is stocked with beautiful china as well as everyday summer china. It has everything you could possibly want because it is our treasured home, and we like to live in a comfortable manner. We know that you will enjoy this essentially brand new home. You will probably not want to leave. So, come back.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for your beautiful house and property! This summer is our third renting a house together, and your house is head and shoulders above the others. We made use of your kayaks and had an awesome time paddling around the harbor. The beaches were also a favorite, especially Madequecham! Overall, this week on Nantucket could not have been better, and this house made our vacation that much more special! Thanks again!

Lovely home in quiet and safe location. Beautifully appointed with everything we needed to have fun

  • 5 of 5

The Polpis Farmhouse is a beautiful home in a lovely location . It was perfect for our gang, with enough bathrooms, bedrooms, and extra kitchen in guesthouse. In the main house a huge kitchen with attached family room was the focal point for us , and our grandkids had so much fun spending time there. The enormous yard was wonderfully safe. We spent many an hour on the back deck enjoying the area and amazing sunsets in Polpis Harbor.

Aside from a few rooms having AC issues, which was taken care of by the middle of the week, we had a very memorable vacation celebrating my husbands 70th birthday.

The house comes with bikes, kayaks, and beach toys. My husband and I brought our own, riding everyday , and the kids enjoyed the bikes available . We were not able to use the kayaks but highly recommend it.

The Polpis Farmhouse comes with some great whaling history, we would highly recommend staying in this wonderful place. It's also very close to Pocomo and Sesachacha two great beaches for young ones.

The Best of Nantucket

  • 5 of 5

This was our fourth visit to the Polpis Farm House that we have loved and enjoyed so much. The home is absolutely lovely. Spacious, beautifully decorated and comfortably furnished, it provides the full essence of the period when this house was built and the character of Nantucket. There is more than ample bedroom, bathroom and living space. Exceptionally well maintained and spotless. And the kitchen is modern, large and well equipped for just about any large family.

There is a nice view of Polpis Harbor from the house and it is less than a 5 minute walk away. There you will find lots of boating. We especially enjoyed kayaking from there and out onto Nantucket Harbor. Lots of wonderful things to see and do. We collected muscles in our kayaks along the shore edge and steamed them at home that evening. Lots of clams in just a few feet of water right at Polpis Harbor beach. Lots of bicycling and hiking too. The ocean beaches are magnificent and just a short bicycle ride away.

We cannot imagine a more spectacular place to stay for our Nantucket vacation.

Favorite house---Favorite location!

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Polpis Farmhouse was a joy. It is our favorite house that we have vacationed at on Nantucket and absolutely the best location for boating, beaches, bike path, and town. We just keep coming back. This time we were three couples and we spread out nicely and enjoyed all the space. The huge kitchen was a dream. Every piece of equipment we needed and much more we never used. Spice drawer loaded and the basics for cooking were all there! The beds and linens were the best quality and the bathrooms updated, while the rest of the original house has kept its historical charm with comfortable new furniture. The newest addition is on the other side of the breezeway and provides complete privacy—it would have been great if we had a baby among our crowd! The outdoors is great for relaxing or grilling and dining, and the short walk to the harbor. Our bedroom had a large balcony that looked out on Polpis Harbor. Not only did the hosts provide four kayaks, but also six bikes which we used daily to ride to the beaches and farm stand. Finally, the house and yard are completely private with lush well manicured gardens.

Wonderful vacation home

  • 5 of 5

What a house! What a location! This historically renovated home is furnished with the best beds, the most comfortable furniture, the best linens and towels, and beautiful knickknacks and trappings everywhere. The central kitchen is large and wonderfully equipped. It will probably be the gathering place for anyone who visits, even though there are beautiful sitting rooms and living rooms throughout.

The house is located on Polpis Harbor, east of the main commercial area of Nantucket, but is easily accessed from anywhere on the island in just a few minutes. Within 200 yards of the house, you can kayak, sail, dig for clams and mussels, walk your dogs, play on the expansive lawn with the kids, or connect up with the island's network of bike paths. A short bike or car ride away are gorgeous sandy beaches where you can watch the seals. Or you can visit a lighthouse or walk the bluffs overlooking the ocean.

This house comes equipped with four kayaks, eight or ten bicycles and helmets, and other equipment to help you enjoy your visit.

The comfort and location make for a most enjoyable vacation on one of the world's most beautiful and interesting islands. I was enchanted by the whole experience. I will be back.

Relax and Rejuvenate in Nantucket

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Nantucket and we hit the jackpot by deciding to stay at the Polpis Farmhouse for our Nantucket family vacation. Located right at Polpis Harbor it provided a quiet retreat where we could relax and explore the island at our leisure. The views of Polpis Harbor and Nantucket sound were great, and the patio afforded wonderful sunsets in the evening.

Access to bikes and kayaks are included with the house. Polpis Harbor is well protected so kayak trips are a breeze. The sunset kayak trip we took the night we arrived was perfect and has been permanently etched in my memory. I couldn't believe the bike paths on island. It made me realize how much my hometown is lacking when it comes to being bike friendly. The bike trail is right across the street and gives you worry free access to most of the island. One day we jumped on the bikes, peddled past a cranberry bog, past Sankaty Head Lighthouse, through the quaint town of Sconset, and had our feet in the sand at a picture perfect beach in less than 30 minutes.

The house is about a 10 minute drive from the ferry terminal so you are separated from the hustle and bustle of that area. We appreciated the buffer.

For the property itself, the description and pictures were accurate. The house was clean with plenty of linens and towels. There are several areas for relaxing and dining. Despite this we still found ourselves hanging around the table closest to the kitchen most evenings. The kitchen is spacious and we were able to have several people in the kitchen helping out at the same time. The lawn is large and provides plenty of space for kids to run around. Take the time to read about the house and the reconstruction efforts in the binder. It will give you an appreciation for the character of the house.

The only negative thing I can say is we didn't spend enough time on Nantucket. I wish I had known beforehand how peaceful and relaxing the island can be if you are in the right place. I would not hesitate to recommend this rental to friends or family. I just hope they invite us to stay with them at the Polpis Farmhouse when they do rent it. :-)

luxurious, private, informal out- and in-door fun

  • 5 of 5

Before we rave about the great adventures we had with the bikes and kayaks, we want to give huge thanks for the absolute comfort we found here-the beds and linens so comfortable! The kitchen-a cook's dream-so well equipped and with such beautiful serving pieces- and the outdoor living so private.

We loved coming back from the beach and having the outdoor shower- and lounging on the patio and upstairs deck with total privacy.

Thanks for letting us use your bikes and kayaks-we explored the harbor in the kayaks and rode for miles on the bikepath.

We set up 2 puzzles on the dining room table and ended up eating our meals outside or at the kitchen table - what fun to sit at that antique and wonder who else has eaten there!

We can see why National Geographic named Nantucket the #1 Island in the World- especially with the kind of charm we found here at Polpis Farm.

We are close to 3 of the finest restaurants on the island: Toppers at the Wauwinett House (2 miles), and the Summer House and Chanticler in Siasconset (3 miles). When our children were little, they liked to eat lunch at the Summer House patio and swim in their pool overlooking the ocean. In the evenings we would visit the Sconset Market for an evening ice cream cone, walk down to the beach, and wait for the stars to come out.

The closest beach at 1.5 miles and a great morning run is Quidnet Beach. It has both the ocean and a safe pond for young children to swim in. Madequetcham (4miles) is a remote South Shore Beach with incredible swimming and an equally incredible drive.

We are a short bike ride to Siasconset, The Market, Rose Covered Cottages, and the lighthouse. Lock your bikes up and take the Bluff Walk along the ocean and pass some of Nantucket's most beautiful homes and gardens. We have lots of bikes for your use. The bike trail is across from the house. We have a favorite 15 mile triangular loop ride that takes you to Siasconsett, down the Miles End Road, and home by Polpis Road. Braver souls can off road up to Altar Rock.

Polpis Harbor is a boater's and shell fisherman's paradise. Take our kayaks and paddle out to the head of the harbor and to Pocomo. Mussels are ripe for the picking in the tall grass. estuaries. Borrow our clamming rakes and rake clams at low tide for chowder. You will see lots of people sailing. The town sailing school offers weekly sailing lessons for young people of all ages. It is located in our harbor, and you can also rent paddle boards on Washington Street and safely paddle around.

We have some wonderful Land Bank Trails near our house for hiking. See herds of grazing sheep at Squam Farm, discover hidden forests at Squam Swamp, or just enjoy the pasture trails around our house.

We have 2 private golf courses and a public executive course in Sconsett. The Miacomet Golf Club at 6 miles away is public, and there is talk that that the LPGA is coming there in 2014.

At 7 miles you reach Cisco Brewery and Winery. We love the owners, and it is a fabulous place to have some fun and listen to great music. At 3 miles you can purchase fresh produce at Moore's End Farm, and at 5 miles you are on Main Street, Nantucket.

On a rainy day or quiet morning visit the Whaling Museum which is Smithsonian quality and take a walk up Main Street to see the homes built by Whaling Captain's.

If you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, drive to Wauwinett (2 miles), purchase a pass at the Gatehouse, take your tire pressure down to 13 lbs.,and drive out Great Point to fish for blues, picnic, and to see a seal breeding colony. Look directly out to sea. You are looking at Portugal.
