Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, sleeps 4 comfortably, optional blowup bed for children

Our 'Castle in The Clouds' is just seven km from Volcano Arenal, perched 700m above sea-level overlooking the volcano, rainforest, pastures and Lake Arenal and close to many of the most popular amenities the region has to offer . Wake to the sound of howler monkeys, toucans and parrots and enjoy your first cup of locally-grown coffee in our covered gazebo or in the 25 sq. metre sunroom. Our home features a splash pool to cool off after a busy day of eco-adventuring. You can walk to many attractions in the village, including several quaint local restaurants. The home features casual dining indoor or out, hot water throughout, and stunning views from every room. It is completely equipped with a full-sized fridge with ice-maker, gas stove, microwave and blender and includes twice-weekly cleaning service (more often optional on request). An optional personal laundry service is also available. Active or passive, this is the perfect home base for your Arenal vacation!

Although our small stretch of the road is usually in good shape it is steep and the road coming into El Castillo is very rough. We highly recommend a 4x4 vehicle for all your excursions in Costa Rica. We now feature a paved driveway, a separate covered Gazebo (perfect for al fresco dining) and the yard has been completely enclosed with a custom-made 5' stone and wrought-iron fence. You'll enjoy our garden paradise yard featuring a variety of local and tropical plants designed to maximize your Costa Rica experience.

Now-Book Local Tours and Attractions: Hannah and Tomas, our on-site hosts can help you book many local tours and attractions for you on your arrival, saving you the hassle of running around. From zipline tours, hot springs spas and volcano hikes to a horseback ride to a real eco-farm, you can be as busy or as relaxed as you like, but you'll never run out of things to do in the area. Just ask when you arrive and we can make recommendations and reservations for you.

July 2011: If you catch the new reality show 'Love in the Wild' airing on CTV in Canada or NBC in the US, you'll experience life in El Castillo. They were filming the series when we visited in March and almost all of the scenes were shot in and around our little neighbourhood.

About Joe Anderson

We're a semi-retired couple gay couple who divide our time between homes in Canada, The United States and Costa Rica.

Joe Anderson purchased this chalet in 2010

Why Joe Anderson chose El Castillo

We fell in love with Costa Rica on our first visit here in 2007 and came to the Arenal area in 2010 when we had this home custom built for us. We love 'places at the end of the road' where we can experience authentic and unique characters. El Castillo is a true 'Tico' community. Apart from a dozen or so ex-pats from around the world, our neighbours are locals-farmers, labourers and professionals who live and work in this beautiful corner of the world. When we first stood on this piece of land we immediately knew that it was a one-of-a-kind view, and that has been confirmed by the hundreds of guests who have stayed here in the last four years. We're proud to be one of the most-popular destination properties in Costa Rica, enjoying super-host status and a five-star rating on every site. All our guests remark on the million-dollar view, the accommodations, the peace and the many local activities, but above all, they praise the friendly local people and how they make every one of guests feel at home and welcome.

What makes this chalet unique

Our house features quiet corners where even two couples or a family can find solitude. Whether in the second floor sunroom with its sweeping view of the volcano, the lake and the neighbouring jungle ravines, the secluded gazebo, a quiet chair on the front porch, sitting by the pool or taking a quiet walk in the tropical garden, this home offers many ways to commune with nature and connect with your inner self.

Guestbook comments from the owner

All that could be said already has been, and all is true. Great setting, very comfortable, fantastic views and garden, and local hosts are wonderful. In regard to the comments about the road to get there, maybe it is coming from Colorado, but the road was no big deal. Just go slow; it 's not like off roading. Best parts are the views and the village. After traveling in other parts of CR, I would say just stay here. No need to even go to La Fortuna. The little village is welcoming and has great amenities, especially considering the size. Wish we had just made our whole trip here. The rest was a let down.

Awesome

  • 4 of 5

What a great home. Our Family, (3) Kids and Us stayed at this great house for a few days when visiting the Arenal Area. The home has some of the best views of Lake and Arenal. We got several days of No Cloud Cover so the views were amazing. The house was great and met our expectations. The Wildlife sounds while sitting on the screened in porch was great and sitting on the deck in the morning was great. I would highly recommend the this house.

BEAUTIFUL PROPERTY!

  • 5 of 5

Gorgeous property in an a premium location. The house was perfect, everything required for our stay, and really appreciated the detailed information that was provided. We had a little difficulty finding the property, but we stopped at Soda La Mesa de Mamá and the market in the village and they were so helpful and kind in contacting the property managers, Tomas and Hannah for us. At first the drive up the steep hill was intimidating, but worth it for the views as soon as daylight hit and we very quickly got used to it both walking and driving! We ate at Soda La Mesa de Mamá 2x, food was wonderful and great value for the money. Enjoyed a pizza from Pizza John's, a few games of pool and cervezas at Howlers, cacao and a song and getting to know Tomas and Hannah at lovely little La Gavilana Herbs & Art. Everyone we spoke to including the locals in the area were so friendly and helpful! Enjoyed a wonderful hike and hanging bridges tour with Sky Adventures, would recommend with a guide as he pointed out so much we wouldn't have noticed without him, and were fortunate enough to spot howler monkeys up close on our drive back to our beautiful property. Went to the FREE hot springs on the way back to La Fortuna and wasn't difficult to access and beautiful. We barely used the pool as it was a bit cooler and a bit rainy, but the view is absolutely breathtaking from everywhere on the property, and we loved watched the fireflies flickering in the fields below the little balcony. Would recommend picking up majority of what you need before travelling out to the property, as the road off the highway is pretty bumpy and you wouldn't want to be travelling back and forth to La Fortuna daily once you're there! Amazing spot, we will be back!

It was a very nice house with a spectacular view of the lake and volcano!

  • 5 of 5

If you love hearing howler monkeys going off every morning and you love the most awesome view of a live volcano, it just smokes a little, and a lake, which has some awesome fish in it, go see Alberto( guide) at Le Mesa De Mama. It is the last house on the road going up. There is zip lining and horseback riding and hang bridges and the list goes on and on! The food is absolutely amazing, the Fusion, Le Mesa De Mama, Pizza John's, the hot springs in La Fortuna! All we did was sleep at the house because there is so much to do! Go to the Eco Zoo and see a young man name Chris, great tour from him! The people are awesome!!! You won't regret it!!

Amazing View

  • 5 of 5

This is a million dollar view!. So tranquil. Close to everything you would want to see in the La Fortuna/El Castillo area. We had 4WD but really didn't need it because it didn't rain the whole time we were there. Roads are really rough though. Tomas and Hannah, the managers, were very friendly and helpful. We loved our time there! 2/21-2/23 2017.

Rain, sun and lots of fun

  • 5 of 5

This property is well designed for the weather and travelers like us. The property is clean, modern with all appliances and furnishings in good shape. The outdoors space downstairs was great for sunny warm times. The enclosed upstairs porch was wonderful for rainy times with the same gorgeous view of Arenal volcano available.

From this location we enjoyed two hiking days from the house, one up the hill searching for the waterfall until the mud finally turned us back, another doing the loop up the hill, down near the Rio Negro, then back through El Castllo and up the hill. We enjoyed Pizza John's, Soda and Benedictos in town, plus the locals moving livestock up and down our hill, the school children coming and going, and lots of expats running businesses or volunteering at the Butterfly Farm in town. El Castillo without a car is a great destination for a few days.

Since we had a car we also ventured out to Sky Trek, some of us hiking, others zip lining. The property was beautiful and perhaps the least muddy hiking of our stay. Plus we visited Restaurante Tipico in La Fortuna and the La Fortuna Waterfall. The clouds lifted and we saw the top if Arenal briefly that day, the only time during our five night stay.

If you don't mind rough roads, this is a fabulous place to relax and a fabulous base for exploring the area.

Spectacular... Dreamy house perched ontop of the hill

  • 5 of 5

A beautiful home perched on top of the Mountains surrounded by the most spectacular views. I felt like I was in a romance novel. The sincerity of the town locals was heart-warming. Beautiful horses surrounds the landscape. Thomas and Hannah were wonderful, caring hosts. You must visit Lil-lander's horse stable and take a ride to the water fall (Just knock on his door). An unforgettable experience that will forever hold a special place in my heart. Pure Vida.... You are off the grid.... so just ask any of your neighbors... they can help you will meals, massages, ........ the community is so strong and vibrant. A HIDDEN GEM! If you can make it here you have found pure serenity.

Arenal Volcano. Lake Arenal. Backs onto Arenal National Forest. Close to La Fortuna and Tabacon Resort. Volcano Arenal is the second-most-visited tourist attraction in Costa Rica, after Manuel Antonio. Our village is located 10 km off the main highway inside the National Park in the quaint village of El Castillo (population 300). Lonely Planet recommended, El Castillo is the perfect base to explore the many attractions this area has to offer. Within the village, you'll find horseback riding, restaurants, the butterfly conservatory, the serpentarium, canoe and kayak rentals and a pulperia (village store). Within a comfortable drive, you'll find the SkyTram, zipline tours, whitewater rafting, the Hanging Bridges, the Arenal Observatory, yoga, hiking trails, Monteverde National Park and a dozen or more hot-springs resorts to suit any budget.

Breaking news-they're filming M.Night Shyamalin's 'After Earth' starring Will and Jaden Smith in our neighbourhood month of February.

Other Activities: Hiking-our European visitors rave about the many interesting hiking trails starting right at your front door.

Horseback riding- 150 metres down the road.

Butterflies or snakes-both museums are walkable from the house

Hot Springs-the area is famous for a dozen hot spring resorts where a day pass is as little as $15pp or join the locals at the 'free' springs right off the main highway.

Ziplining-You have several choices within a few minutes drive of thehouse

SkyTram-for those who prefer a less strenuous ride, take the SkyTram right to the base of the volcano.

Kayak rentals-in the village, explore Lake Arenal and its many islands.

ATV rentals-10 minutes away, guided ATV tours of the area.

The Volcano-choose from several vantage points including the Observatory or the National park.

Massage Therapy-walk-ins welcome or our host can book an in-home massage for you.

Yoga-available at Racho Margot in the village, a world-class eco retreat.

Or just relax in the gazebo or by the pool
