|Minimum Stay||2 - 3 nights|
Our 'Castle in The Clouds' is just seven km from Volcano Arenal, perched 700m above sea-level overlooking the volcano, rainforest, pastures and Lake Arenal and close to many of the most popular amenities the region has to offer . Wake to the sound of howler monkeys, toucans and parrots and enjoy your first cup of locally-grown coffee in our covered gazebo or in the 25 sq. metre sunroom. Our home features a splash pool to cool off after a busy day of eco-adventuring. You can walk to many attractions in the village, including several quaint local restaurants. The home features casual dining indoor or out, hot water throughout, and stunning views from every room. It is completely equipped with a full-sized fridge with ice-maker, gas stove, microwave and blender and includes twice-weekly cleaning service (more often optional on request). An optional personal laundry service is also available. Active or passive, this is the perfect home base for your Arenal vacation!
Although our small stretch of the road is usually in good shape it is steep and the road coming into El Castillo is very rough. We highly recommend a 4x4 vehicle for all your excursions in Costa Rica. We now feature a paved driveway, a separate covered Gazebo (perfect for al fresco dining) and the yard has been completely enclosed with a custom-made 5' stone and wrought-iron fence. You'll enjoy our garden paradise yard featuring a variety of local and tropical plants designed to maximize your Costa Rica experience.
Now-Book Local Tours and Attractions: Hannah and Tomas, our on-site hosts can help you book many local tours and attractions for you on your arrival, saving you the hassle of running around. From zipline tours, hot springs spas and volcano hikes to a horseback ride to a real eco-farm, you can be as busy or as relaxed as you like, but you'll never run out of things to do in the area. Just ask when you arrive and we can make recommendations and reservations for you.
July 2011: If you catch the new reality show 'Love in the Wild' airing on CTV in Canada or NBC in the US, you'll experience life in El Castillo. They were filming the series when we visited in March and almost all of the scenes were shot in and around our little neighbourhood.

We're a semi-retired couple gay couple who divide our time between homes in Canada, The United States and Costa Rica.
Joe Anderson purchased this chalet in 2010
We fell in love with Costa Rica on our first visit here in 2007 and came to the Arenal area in 2010 when we had this home custom built for us. We love 'places at the end of the road' where we can experience authentic and unique characters. El Castillo is a true 'Tico' community. Apart from a dozen or so ex-pats from around the world, our neighbours are locals-farmers, labourers and professionals who live and work in this beautiful corner of the world. When we first stood on this piece of land we immediately knew that it was a one-of-a-kind view, and that has been confirmed by the hundreds of guests who have stayed here in the last four years. We're proud to be one of the most-popular destination properties in Costa Rica, enjoying super-host status and a five-star rating on every site. All our guests remark on the million-dollar view, the accommodations, the peace and the many local activities, but above all, they praise the friendly local people and how they make every one of guests feel at home and welcome.
Our house features quiet corners where even two couples or a family can find solitude. Whether in the second floor sunroom with its sweeping view of the volcano, the lake and the neighbouring jungle ravines, the secluded gazebo, a quiet chair on the front porch, sitting by the pool or taking a quiet walk in the tropical garden, this home offers many ways to commune with nature and connect with your inner self.
All that could be said already has been, and all is true. Great setting, very comfortable, fantastic views and garden, and local hosts are wonderful. In regard to the comments about the road to get there, maybe it is coming from Colorado, but the road was no big deal. Just go slow; it 's not like off roading. Best parts are the views and the village. After traveling in other parts of CR, I would say just stay here. No need to even go to La Fortuna. The little village is welcoming and has great amenities, especially considering the size. Wish we had just made our whole trip here. The rest was a let down.
My husband and our cousins stayed at this property in early November. Great amenities and beautifully kept. We traveled in the rainy season so the view of the volcano wasn't as spectacular, but the area is fantastic and not too touristy. The people of El Castillo (especially the local hosts) are very hospitable and friendly. The home is well stocked and has everything you need for a stay.
Heed the warnings about having to have a 4x4 vehicle to get to the property - the difficulty going up the hill is worth the unique privacy of the home.
Our only compliant would be there is no AC which is mainly fine beciaue you can open the many windows, but we had wished there were more tower fans for the bedrooms to go to sleep.
Would book again - loved relaxing on the second floor screened in porch overlooking the scenery.
Thank you El Castillo en Las Nubes!
We loved the location! Away from the city but close to tons of activities. Woke up every morning and saw the volcano/ mountains. Rained in the afternoon, but that's to be expected. Would definitely stay here again
This home and the area were the highlight of our trip....simply beautiful! Rental process was smooth, Tomas and Hannah were warm and very helpful. The house itself is every bit as nice as the pictures show. When here, be sure you go to Lilander just down the hill for a great horseback riding experience. He is a really friendly and knowledgeable man. We plan to return soon, and hope this home is available once again.
The house was beautiful and the yard (garden) was planted to attract all kinds of wildlife (hummingbirds, masked tree frogs, etc) which are frequent visitors to the gazebo. The town was awesome. You can tell it is a close community. The guide we had for horseback riding (Lilander), which I highly recommend gave us friendly waves each day as did the gentleman that gave us the tour of the ecozoo which the kids (5 and 8) loved. Was definitely away from the hustle and bustle of Fortuna allowing us to relax and enjoy activities and dinner without being one of a few hundred other tourists. We loved it. El Castillo doesn't have much in the way of accommodations and I considered this to be the best with the view and inside. No one in El Castillo has A/C and it wasn't really needed. No mosquitoes our entire stay. The highlights for us were the gazebo/garden and the screened in balcony which provided awesome views while reading or doing other things. The pool is 5' deep (no shallower section) so if you have younger kids bring an in inflatable (we had to buy some). The hosts (Tomas and Hannah) were very friendly and provided great advice when we were getting ready to leave. We decided to cross the river to Monteverde which was an awesome experience and a beautiful drive. I highly recommend it if you want an adventure.
Although off the beaten track, this place was perfect for our vacation. The house had two bedrooms and bathrooms. Our coffee maker died on the first day and it was immediately replaced. We did lose power due to a bad storm one evening but we had candles and flashlights so it made for an adventure. We did eat mostly local and did the horseback ride. All in all a great house for whatever type of vacation you want to have
My husband and I along with another couple stayed at this beautiful home near Lake Arenal and the volcano. It was cloudy and rainy for most of our stay but that didn't deter us at all from hiking to some beautiful waterfalls and also enjoying an afternoon at The Springs. We highly recommend setting some time aside to do this. We also went to Pizza John's...a must!!! for some of the best pizza ever.
Joe's home was warm and beautifully appointed and I would stay there again in a minute! It was a relaxing conclusion to out two weeks in paradise!
