About Joe Anderson
We're a semi-retired couple gay couple who divide our time between homes in Canada, The United States and Costa Rica.
Joe Anderson purchased this Chalet in 2010
Why Joe Anderson chose El Millon
We fell in love with Costa Rica on our first visit here in 2007 and came to the Arenal area in 2010 when we had this home custom built for us. We love 'places at the end of the road' where we can experience authentic and unique characters. El Castillo is a true 'Tico' community. Apart from a dozen or so ex-pats from around the world, our neighbours are locals-farmers, labourers and professionals who live and work in this beautiful corner of the world. When we first stood on this piece of land we immediately knew that it was a one-of-a-kind view, and that has been confirmed by the hundreds of guests who have stayed here in the last four years. We're proud to be one of the most-popular destination properties in Costa Rica, enjoying super-host status and a five-star rating on every site. All our guests remark on the million-dollar view, the accommodations, the peace and the many local activities, but above all, they praise the friendly local people and how they make every one of guests feel at home and welcome.
What makes this Chalet unique
Our house features quiet corners where even two couples or a family can find solitude. Whether in the second floor sunroom with its sweeping view of the volcano, the lake and the neighbouring jungle ravines, the secluded gazebo, a quiet chair on the front porch, sitting by the pool or taking a quiet walk in the tropical garden, this home offers many ways to commune with nature and connect with your inner self.

This house stole my heart!
This property was so peaceful and beautiful. The views of the lake and volcano were amazing, the house was clean and the hosts were BEYOND helpful with everything. My only complaint was that we didn't have enough time there! I would come back in a heart beat :)
Absolutely wouldn’t stay anywhere else in the Arenal volcano area.
My girlfriend and I totally lucked out with this rental. El Castillo is the best village to stay in around the lake and volcano. This is not a highly touristy area but it is the closest to all of the activities you would want to do. Everything is close!!!
If you like privacy, horses, cows, wildlife and are looking for the most amazing view you could imagine, this property is the place to stay. When you are home you will spend a lot of your time in the enclosed balcony on the second level. The pool was a little cool for our liking but we were there during the rainy season so it was expected. That said, we were busy all day so we wouldn’t have swam much anyways.
Places we visited:
Mistico - amazing. 30 minutes
Arenal Lodge - amazing 20 minutes
Arenal 1968 - amazing 20 minutes
Fortune waterfall - beautiful 45 minutes
Ecothermals - WOW - 40 minutes
Arenal Lake - very peaceful - 10 minutes
Hiking from house - gorgeous - 0 minutes
Cocoa tour - worth it - 2 minutes
Places to eat
Essence Arenal - our favorite - 2 minutes
Burritos - forget name - delicious 3 minutes
Johns Pizza - delicious - 10/15 minutes
Fusion - don’t go
Assorted sodas - all are good
If there is a bad review for this place, ignore it. You will not be disappointed.
We loved our stay at this property! It was great to stay outside of the touristy areas and be able to experience a small Costa Rican town. The restaurants recommended were fantastic - we went to John’s Pizza and watched monkeys while we ate lunch.
The house itself was great. Well stocked, clean, and comfortable for a family of five. Due to bed capacity, one of the kids had to sleep on the upstairs balcony but thought it was more comfortable than sleeping in the house. The pool was great and kept my kids entertained each morning and evening. If we ever return to Costa Rica, we would definitely stay here again!
Great house for family
We stayed in the house for 4 nights and 3 days this August (2019) with our 2 kids (Age 5 and 8 years) The house is up on a hill in the little town of El Castillo. The drive from La Fortuna to the house is about 30-45 ish minutes. A 4 wheel drive vehicle is a must, as the road to the house is pretty steep and partly unpaved. We made the trip up and down the road multiple times a day, at night and in the rain with no problem though. We loved being in this quite town. The house has an incredible view of lake arenal and the volcano. The house has two bedrooms upstairs, each with a bed and bathroom. Only downside is one of the bedrooms doesnt have coverings on one of the windows. There is a gorgeous patio off the upstairs bedrooms that is screened in. Downstairs in a living room, 1/2 bath, fully stocked kitchen and dining table. Living room has a fold out couch/futon. Probably ok for a young kid to sleep on, but i doubt an adult would be super comfortable. We went grocery shopping in La Fortuna (super christian #4) and had breakfast/some lunches at home. I was worried about the lack of AC but with the screened in windows/doors open we were not hot at all. There is no washer dryer but hosts can arrange laundry if needed. If we had stayed longer I would have taken them up on that.
Hosts were awesome at arranging a tour guide (Garbielle) for us. We took a tour through the arenal observatory lodge and mistico hanging bridges with our guide. We saw so much more and had a great time with these personalized tours.
We also took their rec of a horse back riding tour with Lilander (stable just down the road) and that was a ton of fun, even though it rained!
We would go back in a heart beat! Highly recommend!
Beautiful Home on the mountain overlooking Lake Arenal
We had a wonderful time staying in this home. The view of Lake Arenal & Arenal Volcano were amazing. The beds were super comfortable and the house had everything that we needed. We really liked being away from the hustle of La Fortuna, but close enough so that we could visit for excursions and shopping.
Staying in El Castillo is like staying in a small Costa Rican village. We visited three restaurants in the area and they were all very good. Pizza John's, La Ventanita, and Soda La Mesa de Mama were all very good . We visited La Ventanita twice. We really liked their nachos and burritos.
We dealt mostly with Anita during our stay. She was very helpful. She also showed us where we could hike down to the river. It was about a 10 minute walk and it was worth it. The local people were all very friendly and would wave to us as we drove past.
They are building a house right next to this one, but we never had any issues with construction noise. We also didn't really see the construction because the house being built sits below this house and the landscaping is so nice and lush around the property that it hid the new construction mostly from our view.
The area is very beautiful and very peaceful. We really enjoyed it.
I was slightly concerned that the house didn't have air conditioning, but it wasn't needed. There were ceiling fans throughout the house and it was cool enough at night to where it never felt hot or muggy. It would have been nice to have a fan in the upstairs porch, but it wasn't a problem.
I would stay in this house again and I would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone. If you are looking to get away and experience small-town Costa Rica with beautiful views and nice little restaurants then this house and town is for you.
Great trip with the family
We had an amazing time staying in this beautiful house. The location is fantastic with the views of the lake and volcano and we loved the little town of El Castillo. The kids loved the splash pool and spent quite a bit of time in it every day, even in the rain. We took the walk up the hill and the views were incredible. I would absolutely recommend this house to anyone looking to get away from it all. It was a wonderful experience!
