About Joan Morykin

I am an avid runner and cyclist and the mother of two young children. My husband is an artist who also has his studio in the building where we also run an art gallery and full service restaurant (currently on hiatus).

Joan Morykin purchased this mill in 2004

Why Joan Morykin chose Poconos

I first visited Jim Thorpe on a weekend get away from New York City in 1998 and immediately fell in love with the town - its proximity to New York and Philadelphia was perfect for a weekend retreat and I bought a small weekend house. A number of years later, my artist husband was looking for studio space and we purchased a 15,000 sq. ft. former wireworks factory and spent six years fixing up the building. As an avid runner, the beautiful mountain trails still hold a fascination for me every time I go out. This town is perfect to raise a family - there is an old fashioned candy store, a classic 5&10 and easy access to the Lehigh River and a recreational lake park, skiing and cycling.

What makes this mill unique

Outdoor lovers can access an extensive trail system connecting a quarter-mile from the loft to enjoy bicycling, running, hiking, or cross-country skiing. The nearby Lehigh River also provides access for whitewater rafting, kayaking and fishing through a number of outfitters. Eclectic shops, museums and the Mauch Chunk Opera House are all within walking distance from the property. Perfect House, Great Location

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Joan's house and it was awesome! It was in a perfect area of town for hiking, about 5 minute walk from the start of all of the trails. It was also about 15 minute walk from the main restaurants and ares in the town. Huge apartment, excatly what we needed, and Joan was super nice, helpful, and available all weekend!

Perfectly Out of the Ordinary!!!!!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a weekend at this amazing place and had one of the best weekend getaways ever! The town itself was great but the converted factory apartment with its unique décor and ambiance put our time in Jim Thorpe over the top! We spent a night a Penns Peak for a concert which was a 10 minute drive. there are also multiple shops and restaurants close by and the walk on Broadway is something to experience. This is definitely on our all-time favorites list of places to stay! Steve and Kathy Bear, DE

Lots of space a few mins from downtown Jim Thorpe

  • 4 of 5

Located just a few mins drive from the main downtown area of Jim Thorpe (my wife even walked it), this is a big old space that could accommodate several people with ease and has parking out front. Owner lives right across the street and was easy to deal with. There is an active art gallery and now closed restaurant on the ground floor. There is one main separate bedroom and several smaller beds in the open loft space. Only suggestion is that some curtains be put up in the main area to provide a bit more privacy. Definitely a place with character, in a good way.

Perfect getaway for everyone; creativity surrounds

  • 5 of 5

WOW! We were dazzled from the first minute to the last... Joan and Victor met us in the courtyard with 2 locally made, cold craft beers and a lively chat. Super inviting and both creative forces... As ex New Yorkers, it was exciting to be surrounded by all that energy-- The Unique stone 'wire factory' building with creative endeavors at every turn. The loft area allowed this family of 5 (3 lumbering teenage boys) to spread out, play cards, watch videos, cook, read and catch up on sleep. Terrific shower and tub. Laundry in suite was nice after we were soaked from rafting! Then there is the beautifully nostalgic FLOW restaurant with the river underfoot and delightful courtyard with stone walls (& polished bowling balls!) for sharing take out food and a bottle of wine. Victor's paintings, font collection and gallery is hauntingly sentimental, beautiful, colorful and interesting. Pianos abound which my son enjoyed (and we did too!). Joan and Victor are inviting, welcoming, accessible and exceptional hosts. The town of Jim Thorpe/Mauch Chunk is full of wonderful American Industrialist history, and breathtakingly beautiful vistas. Good places for breakfast or coffees, quick take out and of course loads of outdoorsy things to do. An easy 2 hour ride to NYC for the day (which we did). Don't miss the wonderful Italian food up and over the hill in Lehighton called SAPORE (pink sauce recommended!)... We played cards to the wee hours, we rafted, we chatted, our phones were put away (although WIFI is there and easy to use for quick check ins to the rest of the world). highly recommended for a family, girls or guys weekend, WEDDINGS, parties, couples getaway... 5 Stars hands down...Just what this family needed!

7 Awesome Things You Need To Know About This Modern Gem

  • 5 of 5

1. There is a stream running through the factory. Like, right under it. There's even a glass table in the restaurant under The Loft that lets you see it flow by! Who needs Fallingwater? Eat your heart our Frankie Lloyd. Be sure to ask Joan or Victor if you want to catch a glimpse!

2. The pictures in the listing (as amazing as they are), do not do this place justice. Not that the pictures are bad: it is actually just impossible. I tried to take some pictures myself. Then I took some huge panoramas. Then I took multiple huge panoramas. It never captured the cozy enormity of being there in real life! And I figured it out: it's because the pictures are not in 3-D. Imagine a bright huge wooden-floored warm modern cube. In real life you experience the entire thing at once. With pictures, you are limited to a few slices of Modern Gem Cube at a time. Go there to really see it!

3. Joan and Victor are incredibly kind and fun people. All communication and correspondence was a breeze/blast.

4. Victor is an awesome artist with crazy cool paintings that add to the surreal grandeur of The Loft and Jim Thorpe as a whole. That's right. The whole town is better because of Victor. And Joan.

5. As with any unbelievable get-away, there may or may not be a hidden secret door.

6. Glen Onoko Falls (an infinite cascade of waterfalls) is a 5 minute drive away. You've never seen so many waterfalls before in your whole life. You'll never seem them all. I think the last Falls is in Canada. It's a difficult hike! Bring sticks and shoe leather, rations for 40 nights (worst case scenario: Canada).

7. There may or may not be a 2,000 sq. foot "mud room" off the entrance of the loft that is perfect for hanging a Pinata, and running around a little silly. A best use scenario would involve an expert 70's disco DJ and an entire rollerskating entourage. Don't do that last one. But you could. But don't. (Ask Joan.)

Some of this is silly, but in all honesty, this place is amazing. We were a large group of noisy old friends, and Joan and Victor were very kind and generous to share their amazingly realized imaginations. We are forever thankful!

Much-Needed Relaxing Girls Weekend!

  • 5 of 5

This place was amazing! So much character and charm. Joan was so nice and a pleasure to work with. Their refurbished factory/loft has a beautiful Art Gallery downstairs and The Loft is less than 3/4 mile from downtown Jim Thorpe. My girls and I-a total of 6- had plenty of space to spread out and relax. We will definitely be visiting The Loft again! Glen Onoko trail and Whitewater Raffting Adventures are a short drive away...only about 10. And we ate at a fabulous restaurant called Moya. There are a ton of little Vintage and Consignment Shops downtown...perfect for out little getaway. The only thing I will be bringing for my next trip up are additional pillows...and maybe my own blender for daiquiris...the one that was there wasn't large enough to make 6 daiquiris, but, Joan has furnished the place with all the comforts of home and we definitely look forward to going up again!!! Thank you Joan
