About the property

Bedroom, Kitchen, Bathroom & Patio; Private Access & Parking

Eleven Oaks Suite is located in a downtown Austin home that has both city and state historical designation. Your hosts, who live on the premises, are homeowners Ted Siff and Janelle Buchanan and their two daughters. The original part of the house was built in 1858 by Edward Clark, who was Texas’ lieutenant governor under Sam Houston and, briefly, governor.

Your suite has a private entrance and a designated parking space in the rear of the property. Entrance is through a locked gate into the back yard. Your suite is comprised of a bedroom with a double bed, television, writing desk, closet with plenty of hanging space, full-length mirror and small chest of drawers; a bathroom with shower; and a kitchen with a table and two chairs, dishes, glasses and utensils, a small refrigerator, microwave, toaster and Keurig single-serve coffee maker. A small patio is outside your kitchen door, with a table and chairs. Clothing hangers, a hair dryer, coffee, tea and a variety of sweeteners are provided. Before your arrival we will stock the refrigerator with cream, butter, cream cheese and bottled water to supplement whatever food you choose to bring or purchase for your stay.

When we confirm your reservation, please let us know approximately what time to expect you. You will come to the front door of our house, where we will meet you with your keys and directions to parking and entrance to your suite. We will also give you the WiFi password at that time.

About Ted Siff & Janelle Buchanan

We’re Ted, a publisher and parks advocate, and Janelle, a homemaker and actress, and we’ve each called Austin home for over 40 years. We know the neighborhoods, fun spots and beautiful places that make Austin so special, and can answer all your questions about where to find the best margarita, bat viewing, natural swimming hole, barbecue and special night out dining. Interested in music, dance, theatre, or museums? We can guide you to those venues as well.

Ted Siff & Janelle Buchanan purchased this house in 1978

Why Ted Siff & Janelle Buchanan chose Austin

We both chose Austin to go to U.T. But we each chose Austin again to live, work and raise our family. We have grown up as Austin has. Austin is sophisticated but never snooty. You can find world class restaurants and bars, and you can wear your jeans and boots to visit them if you like. Just about any cuisine you prefer is available somewhere in the city, from Tex-Mex to Ethiopian. You can enjoy popular music at the hundreds of clubs around Austin as well as at the top-of-the-line Austin City Limits studio, not to mention the Austin Symphony and Austin Lyric Opera. Oh, and all those festivals: ACL, SXSW, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Moontower Comedy Festival, F-1 racing, and more. If you’re up for a drive, you’re just over an hour away from the Texas Hill Country, with its wineries, beautiful scenery, and German heritage. (Or go an hour east and check out central Texas’ old Czech communities. Have a kolache! Visit the Spoetzel Brewery in Shiner which, during Prohibition, stayed in business by producing near beer plus just a little of the regular kind for “medicinal purposes.”) Diverse? You bet. Friendly? Very.

What makes this house unique

Eleven Oaks Suite is in just about the perfect location – downtown, blocks from some of Austin’s best restaurants and clubs, and walking distance to UT and the Darrel Royal Memorial Stadium, gorgeous hike and bike trails, and great shopping. Because of its proximity to all this plus the Capitol, the Austin Convention Center and the Rio Grande campus of Austin Community College, the neighborhood is bustling during the day but quiet at night. Your suite is comfortable, warm and welcoming. Cold Shiner beer will be waiting for you!

South By Southwest 2017

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for the four nights of the SXSW music festival. I have been to SXSW many times and have always stayed in one of the downtown hotels; I decided to try something different this time and am glad that I did. The suite is tastefully decorated, clean and very comfortable. It is part of a bigger house but it has been arranged so guests have their own private entrance from the back. There is a pretty courtyard in back shaded by beautiful old trees. Great location - a few blocks out from the center of downtown Austin so not in the middle of the SXSW craziness, but still just a few minute walk from Sixth Street (and I did it at 2 AM with no concern for safety). Checking in and out was a breeze. Ted and Janelle were most friendly and helpful, even dropping off some foot cream to help with SXSW walking damage. My only complaint was the cats wouldn't let me be their friend!

Charming and convenient

  • 5 of 5

This is a comfortable and cozy suite centrally located to downtown Austin. The suite is quiet and clean and the perfect respite from a busy day at festivals or sightseeing.

The suite is like a giant studio apartment. The small kitchen area with a sink, coffee maker, microwave, and a small fridge is perfect for fixing a quick breakfast or snack before heading out for the day.

The main room is large with a small desk and easy chair. I found myself coming home midday just to regroup in the room's peace and quiet before heading out for a long night out.

Ted and Janelle are the perfect hosts -- responsive yet respectful of your privacy. I highly recommend this rental for your trip to Austin

Frequent guest

This really is my home away from home when I travel to Austin. I have stayed here probably 15-20 times. One of the things I like is that for midweek travel I can reserve just one night.

The location is fantastic. For example, on my last visit I ran to Whole Foods downtown, had breakfast, ran down to the lake and ran back, going through 2nd, 3rd, and 6th streets, and beautiful neighborhoods north of downtown. I often walk to restaurants on 6th and the neighborhoods are safe.

Regarding the property, there is a lovely backyard patio that is private and shaded.

The owners are wonderful and the property is a suite/bedroom, bathroom and little kitchenette.

Great location, wonderful host, close to Convention Center!

  • 5 of 5

Loved my stay! This was my first time to stay in a Home Away property. I loved this historic home. I'll do it again and will use this location next time I am in Austin. Quite a change from the hotels. Wished I'd had more time to read some of the books in the room - it was like a mini library! Lots of good information about Austin available in the room too. The owner was a perfect host - greeted me upon arrival, brief overview of the quarters, and let me know they were available if I had any questions. I walked in the evenings and felt safe in this area as well.

Cute, Clean Historic Suite

  • 5 of 5

We loved this cute suite in a great location close to the capitol in Austin. The owners were so nice and have obviously taken great care of the place. Lots of personal touches and really neat history. Very close to a moonlight tower - check it out, the history surrounding those is very cool, very "Austin." Comfy bed, plenty of room for the two of us, and a beautiful backyard space with towering oaks (and a very curious raccoon). Great books too, lots of quirky Austin-themed selections. Wish we had been able to stay longer to enjoy them more. We've rented a few times in Austin, and this is our favorite for both house and location by far. Thanks Ted and Janelle!
