About the property

Bedroom, Kitchen, Bathroom & Patio; Private Access & Parking

Eleven Oaks Suite is located in a downtown Austin home that has both city and state historical designation. Your hosts, who live on the premises, are homeowners Ted Siff and Janelle Buchanan and their two daughters. The original part of the house was built in 1858 by Edward Clark, who was Texas’ lieutenant governor under Sam Houston and, briefly, governor.

Your suite has a private entrance and a designated parking space in the rear of the property. Entrance is through a locked gate into the back yard. Your suite is comprised of a bedroom with a double bed, television, writing desk, closet with plenty of hanging space, full-length mirror and small chest of drawers; a bathroom with shower; and a kitchen with a table and two chairs, dishes, glasses and utensils, a small refrigerator, microwave, toaster and Keurig single-serve coffee maker. A small patio is outside your kitchen door, with a table and chairs. Clothing hangers, a hair dryer, coffee, tea and a variety of sweeteners are provided. Before your arrival we will stock the refrigerator with cream, butter, cream cheese and bottled water to supplement whatever food you choose to bring or purchase for your stay.

When we confirm your reservation, please let us know approximately what time to expect you. You will come to the front door of our house, where we will meet you with your keys and directions to parking and entrance to your suite. We will also give you the WiFi password at that time.

Awesome! as it was the last time :)

I was in this VR last June and I decided to book it again for this trip.

I have the impression that this will be my Austin house for my future trips.

All was perfect, as it was last time.

Great location, great character and great hosts.

  • 5 of 5

Close to everything in Austin with your own parking and back yard patio oasis. Tastefully decorated and wanted for nothing.

Would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Charming and Unique

  • 5 of 5

Every bit of our experience lived up to or surpassed our expectations. The suite was clean, sufficiently roomy and well appointed. The history of the building added to the experience too. The hosts were friendly and great to speak with. Best place to stay in Austin.

Nice stay, good hosts and beautiful kitties

  • 3 of 5

Good location, lovely suite. Access was through the back of the property which was awkward. Property was advertised as no smoking in suite, which is perfectly understandable. Once inside, a note was posted which stated "no smoking anywhere on the property", not even outside. For cigar or cigarette smokers I found this a bit unreasonable and inconvenient. For the money spent I would have found a property more smoker friendly. No range for cooking, so microwave meals or eat out only. Met a huge raccoon eating out of the cat food dishes early one morning. If not driving, it can be a bit of a walk to the downtown area for food and entertainment. Suite consisted of a small kitchen/dining area, step down living & sleeping area, and step up bathroom. Rental was very clean with towels, toiletries, coffee & tea.

Owner's Response: Hi, Charles - Happy you enjoyed the cats and wildlife! So do we. To address your concerns: Ours is a private suite in our home, with its own entrance directly next to guest parking. The only other option would be for guests to enter and leave through our front door and living room which would be awkward not only for us, but for guests. We feel it's much better for guests to have a private entrance through a locked gate, providing both convenience and security, then a walk on a short path through a landscaped back yard to their own door. There is no range for cooking, but the suite has a microwave, toaster and refrigerator. As the suite is almost always occupied by people here for stays of only a few days, we chose not to totally reconfigure the kitchen to provide an appliance that most likely would be used very little. (The townhouse at the back of our property, which accommodates six, has a full kitchen.) As for the property being non-smoking: Our page, under the rules section, specifically states that smoking is not allowed indoors or outdoors, anywhere on the property; the sign in the kitchen is just a reminder of what we expect guests already understand. We are a non-smoking property in order to meet the needs of the vast majority of our guests, who are non-smokers, and to keep our property safe, clean and odor-free. Yours is the first complaint we've received about the policy in over four years of operation; on the contrary, we've gotten a great deal of positive feedback from guests who appreciate a totally smoking-free property. We hope you had a good time in Austin and a pleasant trip home. Glad the weather was perfect for your F-1 weekend!

About Ted Siff & Janelle Buchanan

We’re Ted, a publisher and parks advocate, and Janelle, a homemaker and actress, and we’ve each called Austin home for over 40 years. We know the neighborhoods, fun spots and beautiful places that make Austin so special, and can answer all your questions about where to find the best margarita, bat viewing, natural swimming hole, barbecue and special night out dining. Interested in music, dance, theatre, or museums? We can guide you to those venues as well.

Ted Siff & Janelle Buchanan purchased this house in 1978

Why Ted Siff & Janelle Buchanan chose Downtown

We both chose Austin to go to U.T. But we each chose Austin again to live, work and raise our family. We have grown up as Austin has. Austin is sophisticated but never snooty. You can find world class restaurants and bars, and you can wear your jeans and boots to visit them if you like. Just about any cuisine you prefer is available somewhere in the city, from Tex-Mex to Ethiopian. You can enjoy popular music at the hundreds of clubs around Austin as well as at the top-of-the-line Austin City Limits studio, not to mention the Austin Symphony and Austin Lyric Opera. Oh, and all those festivals: ACL, SXSW, Fun Fun Fun Fest, Moontower Comedy Festival, F-1 racing, and more. If you’re up for a drive, you’re just over an hour away from the Texas Hill Country, with its wineries, beautiful scenery, and German heritage. (Or go an hour east and check out central Texas’ old Czech communities. Have a kolache! Visit the Spoetzel Brewery in Shiner which, during Prohibition, stayed in business by producing near beer plus just a little of the regular kind for “medicinal purposes.”) Diverse? You bet. Friendly? Very.

What makes this house unique

Eleven Oaks Suite is in just about the perfect location – downtown, blocks from some of Austin’s best restaurants and clubs, and walking distance to UT and the Darrel Royal Memorial Stadium, gorgeous hike and bike trails, and great shopping. Because of its proximity to all this plus the Capitol, the Austin Convention Center and the Rio Grande campus of Austin Community College, the neighborhood is bustling during the day but quiet at night. Your suite is comfortable, warm and welcoming. Cold Shiner beer will be waiting for you!
