Firuz Place is one of Istanbul Place Apartments' sensitive restoration projects. It's on the first and second floors - two spiral flights of original wooden stairs - of a traditional Turkish house. The narrow street is a mix of residential buildings, antique shops and bric-a-brac emporiums, resulting in a neighbourhood that feels worldly yet largely undiscovered.
The apartment is 8 minutes walk from Tophane tram stop, from which Sultanahmet can be reached in a further 10 minutes. Istanbul Modern contemporary art museum, on the waterfront, is just beyond Tophane tram stop. In the other direction quiet streets of antique shops are waiting to be explored and Orhan Pamuk's Museum Of Innocence is just across the road. Famous Istiklal Avenue is 10 minutes walk up the - steep - hill.
The open plan living area occupies the entire top floor, leading onto a private balcony with dining area and views over the authentic street below. The kitchen is contemporary and well-equipped, with high-end appliances including dish-washer. There's a dining table alongside the kitchen and a velvet sofa seating area next to this. At the other end of the open plan floor is another seating area with two comfortable arm chairs facing the balcony.
The two bedrooms - one double, one twin - are on the floor below, via a sweet brick spiral staircase. The bedrooms are positioned either end of a connecting hallway, curtained for privacy. The beds have high quality crisp white linens and the twin beds can be pushed together if required. The chic shower room is between them.
This apartment is 80 m2 in total, homely and full of character. Some of the brickwork on the walls is exposed and the original floorboards are stained dark, giving a warm and friendly atmosphere. The bedrooms comfortably accommodate four people and a fifth/child on a fold-out bed in the living room is possible.
Guests will have the complete privacy of the entire apartment and access at any time to its private balcony.
Çukurcuma is developing area in Beyoglu, yet still very authentic. There are boutique cafes rubbing shoulders with neighbourhood mosques, all amongst the broad selection of antique shops for which the area is renowned.
Metro, bus, tram and ferry stops are all only a few minutes’ walk away. You can be in Sultanahmet (for the big sights of Ayasofya, Topkapı, Blue Mosque etc.) in about 20 minutes by public transport or 30 minutes on foot. In the other direction, by Metro, you can be in Şişli (for Istanbul’s biggest shopping mall) in 30 minutes or Levent (for Istanbul’s business district) in 35 minutes.
There is a taxi rank just around the corner and some secure car parks too.

We thoroughly enjoyed a long weekend in Istanbul and were enthraled by the interesting and diverse city. Our accommodation was in the nicest possible area, beautifully furnished and equipped and the perfect destination to come home to after a day (or night!) exploring.
I would have no hesitation at all of recommending this property to anyone wishing to enjoy amazing Istanbul. We will be back!
Everything about our apartment stay was terrific! The apartment itself is comfortable and spacious, with two bedrooms, big enough to sleep 5 comfortably; a nice full bathroom with rain shower; open-plan kitchen, eating area, living room and sitting area; and large balcony shaded with an umbrella. The apartment was spotlessly clean, and stocked with paper goods and bottled drinking water, plus plenty of bed and bath linens. The neighborhood is vibrant and exciting, and very hilly! Think San Francisco ... and be prepared for some strenuous uphill walking. The apartment is about a 5-10 minute (uphill) walk to Istiklal Caddesi and about a 5-10 minute (downhill) walk to the Tophane streetcar station, where there is a nice little grocery store, DIa, where all the necessities can be found.
Things we especially loved in the apartment: the panini-style bread toaster; French press coffee maker and electric kettle; dishwasher, wonderful balcony; and comfortable beds. There are lots of wonderful sit-down restaurants within a few minutes walk, also lots of "street food" quick shops, for kebabs, sausages, etc.
We had a really outstanding experience with this apartment and it has totally converted my wife to the VRBO approach.
Superb location near the Tophane tram stop and the main pedestrian shopping/strolling/eating street (Istikal Caddesi) but quiet and non-touristic with parents taking their kids to school in the mornings. Great bakery and many small grocery stores around the corner or along the street.
The apartment itself is immaculate, with clean and modern fittings and decor. It feels spacious - open plan living/dining/kitchen area and balcony upstairs, bedrooms downstairs. We were met on check-in and check-out by Monica who was very friendly and helpful. Tarkan and Julia were also very responsive by e-mail.
Be aware that in addition to the stairs, the walk to the tram stop and Istikal Caddesi main street are quite steep and the pavements very minimal and uneven. However, there is also a taxi station (Galata Taksi) 50 m from the door.
Cukurcuma is ‘happening’ area in Beyoglu, yet still very authentic. A short wander in one direction will bring you to quiet streets of antique shops and in another to Istanbul Modern contemporary art gallery on the Bosphorus. Istiklal is just up the hill.
