The Way Life Should Be!

Bedrooms 2
Space 900 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Baths (Sleeps 6) - Summer months, bunkhouse available, sleeps 2

No cars, no noise, just the rustle of a breeze through the pine trees, the song of a chickadee and the occasional call of a loon. You work hard. You deserve a break! This is Jennie Cottage, in Northern Maine, the most forested state in the country. Located about one hour north of Bangor, the cottage is an easy 10 minute drive from I-95. It is close to Baxter State Park, the newly designated Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument (87,500 acres of wilderness) and beautiful Mt. Katahdin (the start or end point of the Appalachian Trail). Canada is about 1 hour away and Acadia National Park is a 2.5 hour trip. With virtually no traffic, on a dirt road, the property is very child friendly (although supervision is a must near the lake, of course). Well-behaved dogs are welcome, too!

Inside, you’ll find a knotty pine interior which features a cozy living room with a large TV and a DVD player (bring your own DVD’s). A new addition to the cottage is satellite TV and high-speed internet service. There is a spacious dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The kitchen has everything you might need, including a refrigerator/freezer, electric range, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and even a bread machine. The water is well water, from an underground spring and we do have hot water! Towels and bed linens are provided but you might want to bring beach towels.

The cottage sleeps six–one bedroom has a full-sized bed with an ultra-comfy memory foam mattress and the other bedroom has two twin beds, both with memory foam mattresses. There are also two twin-sized Aerobeds that you can put on the floor for two more people. The beds are dressed with high-quality sheets and fluffy, goose down comforters are available for each.

In the summer months, the bunkhouse is available and sleeps 2. The bunkhouse has no electricity and no heat and even in the summertime, nights in Maine can be fairly chilly--but it could be the perfect spot for adventurous kids with flashlights!

There is no landline phone and cell service depends on your carrier.

Outside, is the wild beauty of Plunkett Pond, which is a mere 50 feet from the back door. You can practically roll out of bed and into the lake! A 2-person, sturdy, inflatable boat is available, as well as a single-seat kayak and life jackets. You can cruise the 435 acres of sparkling clean water, observing a wide variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, chipmunks, woodpeckers, muskrats, raccoons, moose, deer, fox, eagles, ospreys, kingfishers, partridge and of course, Maine’s famous loons. If you prefer to relax, you can lounge by the water’s edge, watching the reflection of the clouds in the water until you drift off into a peaceful nap in your lakeside hammock. There is also a small dock and a picnic table. In the evening, you can build a crackling fire in the outdoor fireplace while listening to the loons and bull frogs. Roast some weenies or make s’mores! There is also a charcoal grill available, so you can cook your freshly caught fish on the grill! Bring your fishing gear!

(Please be aware that this site, as well as any other site, has scammers. These criminals will pose as the owner of the property and steal your money. If anyone asks you to deposit money directly into a Barclays Bank account, do NOT do it, as that is the preferred bank of these types and usually, all involved are uncooperative about getting your money back, so please be careful and make sure you are dealing with the real owner. Also, please keep in mind that some weeks shown as unavailable on the calendar may still be available, so please ask if you have a specific week or weeks in mind).

We would love for you to be our guests at Jennie Cottage. We like to think that our lakeside retreat captures the essence of the Maine state slogan, “Maine: Life as it should be.” Your memories of your vacation here will last a lifetime.

About Jeanie Piecara

I'm originally from Pennsylvania and have always loved green, rural places. I now live and work in New York City but I visit Maine frequently, to get my 'fix' of the wilderness!

Jeanie Piecara purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Jeanie Piecara chose Benedicta

We love our little house and we hope you will, too. I named it Jennie Cottage in honor of my mom, who passed away a few years ago. From the first time I visited this area of Maine, I knew I wanted to be there and my goal was to buy a house where I could roll out of bed and into a lake. Happily, that's exactly what I got!

What makes this cottage unique

The first time I saw the cottage, I stepped out of the car and the first thing I noticed was the lovely smell in the air. It smelled so fresh and clean--leaves and pine. And then, looking at the lake from the lawn; it was so serene and blue, and all around, Chickadees were singing. It sounds like a Disney movie! But honestly, that's the way it was--and is. Once I stepped into this pretty little cottage, I knew right then I had to have it. And even better, now we can share it with other people. It's peaceful, quiet and the whole property just has a really nice atmosphere, I think. If you choose to stay here, we know you'll have many happy memories.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed at Jennie Cottage a full week and we were very pleased with the property. It was cozy, clean, and well-equipped. This location is VERY quiet, especially at night. If you are a writer, looking for peace and quiet, this is the place! There are houses around, but at a reasonable distance apart and the neighbors are very friendly, but not pushy. The location is excellent: close to I-95 and north of Lincoln (good shopping & supplies). A gravel road (about a mile) is the entry and great for walking (also easy to drive in a sedan). It was so cool (for us Texans) that we didn't swim (daytime highs were low 70's), but the cool nights guaranteed a great night's sleep (the mattresses/pillows are very comfy). The cottage is fully furnished, all you need to bring are clothes and beach towels if you swim. There's even a kayak and a rubber boat. The only downside is no cell phone service in the area although the owner thoughtfully provides a "hot spot" for checking emails. We would definitely rent this cottage again!

Quiet Beautiful relaxing place!

  • 5 of 5

This camp is the perfect spot to spend a vacation. It has a great view of the pond from the screened porch. You can sit and listen to the loons while you relax. The fishing is very good in Plunkett pond. We all caught many fish and some were very big bass. The camp has all the modern things that you would need like tv and internet, washing machine and dryer, hot showers, and is fully stocked with all the cooking pots, pans, utensils and dishes that you will need. The area will restore your faith in humanity; the people are amazing! There are quite a few Amish in the vicinity driving their buggies on the roadway. We drove to Baxter State park to hike twice, the views are amazing! We visited the ice caves over near the abol bridge on the golden road. There is much to do in this region. I had the best coffee milkshake I had ever tried at Debbie's deli in Patten. I would recommend staying here!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The cottage had everything we needed. The weather was perfect so we spent a lot of time fishing, kayaking, swimming, and going for walks. Our 10 yr old loved having the bunkhouse to himself and "invited us over" to play card games for the one rainy day. The homeowner was delightful to work with too. We will definitely be looking to visit again next summer.

Idyllic stay

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Jeanie's cottage was truly idyllic. The neighbors, Ken and Mary , gave us a warm welcome to the home and even generously offered their boat to my grandchildren while the cottage had it's own . We had a blast kayaking, relaxing on the dock, cooking on the outdoor grill and reading in the hammock, so as far as amenities, the lakefront home is well-equipped and allows for an unparalleled summer getaway. Plunkett Pond was even more picturesque and peaceful then we could have imagined. Waking up to the sunrise on the lake, watching the water glisten through the kitchen window, listening to the loons while unwinding on the screened porch... thank you Jeanie for allowing us to make these incredible memories and for a terrific rental experience! We hope to be back some day soon.

Relax, refresh and enjoy nature

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was clean and comfortable. We loved being right on the pond and having a dock. WiFi and satellite worked great and was nice to have available. Kitchen was well equipped and there was plenty of supplies such as paper goods which was appreciated. If you want a quiet place to unwind and relax off the beaten path this is the perfect place! If you're a nature photograper you will love the area!

Spectacular vacation!!! Amazing family memories were made :)

  • 5 of 5

My children and I spent the past two weeks at Jennie Cottage. It was a wonderful experience. The owner, Jeanie, is one of the kindest people I've ever dealt with - she's incredibly helpful and it was a great rental experience. We made so many incredible memories these past two weeks. Fishing, swimming, kayaking, birdwatching (the Loons and the Bald Eagles are so incredible! We saw them every single day!), stargazing (you will not find a more amazing sky!) just plain sitting and relaxing and enjoying the sheer peace of Plunkett Pond. The neighbors, Ken and Mary, restored my faith in humanity and human kindness. They are just the nicest people you will ever meet. Ken helped my kids make the most amazing bird feeder to remember our time at Jennie Cottage. I can go on and on. It's just a wonderful place and was a great family experience. I'm grateful to have had it.
