Don and Nancy have loved this location since coming here on their honeymoon many years ago. Nancy's parents have owned the property since the 1950's where she and her family made many precious memories. Best ones have been focused on swimming at the natural sandy beach and canoeing around the lake. We have added'Tanglewood', our Lake House in 2006 and look forward to making many more memories in the future. We'd love to share our vacation home with you when we aren't here.
Nancy Gerrans purchased this house in 2006
My father purchased this lovely wooded property with a natural sandy beach in the late 1950's from my grandfathers' cousin. The water front where our dock is located used to be a sheep pasture before a dam was built and the the lake covered more land. The sheep pasture became a spring fed marsh area that has some of the best fishing on the lake. We have the original cabin, Dee's Chalet, down closer to the water. Both dwellings share the 5 acres and are a quiet and peaceful retreat.
I've loved this area since childhood, so when we had the opportunity to have a vacation home here along with the chalet , we were delighted. Just turning off the paved road and traveling down the dirt lane toward the lake gives us such a relaxing feeling, we want to share this with others.
We traveled from Ireland and Nancy was there to meet us with a batch of homemade Brownies. The house was spotlessly clean, spacious bright and comfortable. We enjoyed the deck the BBQ and the fire pit and it was an added bonus to have use of canoes etc for the lake. Close to Raymond and Windham for shopping and restaurants, perfect spot to get away for rest and relaxation. We will be back next year.
The house has everything you need to have a comfortable stay away from home. The wrap around deck is a plus in good weather. Nancy met us with brownies and gave us a through walk around the grounds and the home. She also stated they had a basement apartment and secured the access to the basement, fully understandable. She also stated, though not implied for our week, that her husband comes up on a different day of the week. Don actually did show up on Thursday morning and stayed until early Friday evening. During the stay he did some light woodworking, etc and we could hear his muffled voice when on the phone so sure he could hear us also. It felt a bit uncomfortable having a complete stranger having access to our area as no deadbolt on our side. Don seemed like a nice enough guy having spoken briefly upon his arrival, the situation was awkward. In 40 years of renting summer properties this was a first. Unaware that vacation rental by owner included the owner, if this is the norm it should be stated in the property description. This arrangement may not bother other renters however they should be aware of the possibility upfront.
The home is very nice, clean and has all the 'needs' you would want on vacation! Fans for the rooms, extra blankets, Tupperware, too! A creative and clear walk to the beach area, even my 87 year old father could do it and enjoyed it! The boat/cannon was easy to move around and the fish were biting! Loons and even a sea plane to watch come in and take off! Perfect sunsets and a huge wrap around deck! We will be back! Washer/Dryer was perfect, as well!
We really enjoyed staying here, the house is in perfect condition. a nice wrap around deck with plenty of seating for big groups (we had 7 and 2 kids). Everything was perfect, Don showed me around before he took off, there is a nice wooded land and a dock with a bunch of canoes to explore panther pond on, if your center of gravity doesn't agree with you there is also a rowboat with oars which is great for fishing. Multiple fire pits depending if you want to hang out by the house or the dock, this place really has it all and was even greeted with some delicious brownies!. We will definitely be going back soon. Thanks Don and Nancy
What a wonderful find this was. Nancy was there to greet us (with a pie warming in the oven) and show us around the house and the property. The house is even better than the pictures show, especially with the recent addition of a wrap-around deck on the main floor.
The house itself was in wonderful condition, and easily fit our 10 adults (one person did have to sleep on the pull-out sofa on the second floor, but we knew that going in). The dining area has a very large table that accommodated our whole group, plus a few guests throughout the week. The kitchen was easy to work in and had all of the basic equipment needed to cook for a large party.
The beds were comfortable, and the ceiling fans throughout the house kept everyone cool. Two bathrooms is a must with such a large group, and the washer and dryer on the main floor was a definite plus.
The dock with the canoes and rowboat was a short walk. There were plenty of canoes and lifejackets provided, and Panther Pond was a nice place to paddle. We tried some fishing, too, but weren't all that successful. We did not try rowboat.
The walk to the beach was about 5 minutes through the woods. The path is well marked and easy enough, though it was a little soft with all the rain they'd had recently. Their beach was under water, but the adjoining sand beach, which is owned by Nancy's cousin (who was super friendly, and even allowed us to take refuge from a passing thunderstorm in her house), was available to us and was wonderful.
There were a number of Adirondack chairs on the beach for sitting and chatting, some inner tubes for floating in the water, and a fire pit for grilling if we were so inclined. The water was very clear and a perfect temperature for swimming. It's also pretty shallow for a long way out, so it should be safe for younger kids to play in the water, too.
I have nothing but good things to say about the house, the property, and the owner. We've already asked when we can make a reservation for next year!
Nancy greeted us upon our arrival with a homemade pie! The house is amazing...spacious, clean, beautiful, but also comfortable and welcoming. Every time we left to go somewhere or visit friends, we found ourselves referring to our return as "going home". Wonderful hosts and a wonderful home...would highly recommend it.
The leaves are beautiful in the fall. Come for apple picking, nature walks, hiking nearby rattlesnake mt. Take the canoe out on 3 x 2 mile panther pond to see the blue heron living nearby. The loons will play hide and seek with you, and there is always the tenny river to explore joining panther pond to crescent lake.
Winter fun is only 10 miles away in windham at the seacoast fun park where you can go tubing. Skiing is just 28 miles away at shawnee peak in bridgeton, or sunday river in bethel, me, or many other mountains in nearby new hampshire. Snowmobiling on the raymond rattlers trails are only 2 miles away, then there is ice fishing in jan. And feb right on panther pond. Oxford is 20 min away with the car races and its new casino. Golfing at poland springs or point sebago is 10 - 15 miles away.
Day trips to freeport shopping and ll bean just 30 min away, downtown portland with the old port shopping, casco bay line ferry rides, light houses and many restaurants, just 40 min away. North conway and mount washington and the many mountains of nh are about one hour away.
We love the peace and solitude of 'being at the lake',taking time to reconnect with nature and family and friends. Come apart and recharge here.
