About Gary Hill

I am a retired restaurant design/engineer. I have spent most of my working life in southern California but also 15 years in Guam and Hawaii. After retiring I have spent the last 10 years doing adventures I didn't have time for when I was younger. I've thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail and the Israeli National Trail. Also bicycled across our country three times. I've climbed Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa and Mt Fuji in Japan. I am an AT trail maintainer and boundary monitor and also volunteer at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy Visitors Center in Harpers Ferry. I also spend much of my time in Metro DC with my fiance Taeko.

PERFECT GETAWAY

  • 5 of 5

This home was absolutely perfect! It was beautifully decorated and we felt right at home. It had everything we needed and more. It was a quick walk to town but it was totally secluded and private. Would recommend this spot to everyone!

Great place to stay in Harpers Ferry

  • 5 of 5

This was such a wonderful home to stay at while visiting Harpers Ferry. It really does seem like you're secluded even though you're right in the downtown area (you can definitely hear the trains coming through, but you can't avoid that unless you stay far away from the center of town. I was kind of worried about it, but it didn't bother me at all). The Appalachian Trail is a couple minutes walk from the house, and there's lots of trails right in or around Harpers Ferry too, so it's a great place if you're a hiker.

The home is comfortable, has a well-stocked kitchen; the wood stove is so nice on a cold day or night--there's plenty of firewood stacked all around the house, so you don't have to worry about running out! Internet's excellent, lovely decor throughout the house, bed's comfortable. Gary's also very easy to get a hold of to answer any questions or concerns too.

Can't say enough about this place and definitely plan on staying again whenever I do visit the area. Thanks so much for a very enjoyable vacation!

Adorable!

  • 5 of 5

This is a perfect little spot for enjoying Harper's Ferry! The property is a quick walk from everything--don't be alarmed by the hills--we got used to them quickly. The cottage is clean and well decorated. Everything you need is there! Gary, the owner, is very friendly and helpful. We were so impressed to learn of his dedication to the Appalachian Trail and that he is a through hiker!! Don't hesitate to stay here!!!!

2nd time was even better and can't wait to come back!

  • 5 of 5

This is my second trip to this rental, both with my wife. Had some great weather and took advantage of the outdoor space with small fire pit. Great people watching from the gazebo or porch! This home has just about everything so no need to pack heavy. Just ask the owner and he will reply, very prompt every time.

We love to hit the trails in the national park and this location makes it so easy to do so. Once you park there is no need to get back in the car.

The home itself is so cozy and charming, mostly updated but still has character. The owner always has firewood well stocked and even provides firestarters and smaller kiln dried pieces to get it going. The bed on the first floor is on the softer side and very comfy! Can't speak to the upstairs loft. Love the space up there and would be great for our kids next trip.

Definitely recommend it! Rates here are a steal!
