Sanctuary Place

Built in 1889 as St Paul's Episcopal Church by architect Eric Eichberg, this historic property hosted varied congregations over the past century before falling into disrepair around 2002. Restoration began in 2005 and the MIddle Loft was completed along with the exterior in 2008. The exterior sides, covered with stucco, were refitted with cyprus siding. The original vintage pine was reclaimed from the roof and sides to be used for the interior construction. The flying buttresses and bell-tower, both missing for decades, were reconstructed from historic photographs. About 50% of the stained glass was replaced with restoration glass, the surviving memorials were restored where possible.

The interior was designed to flow upward and outward providing different vantage-points to view the original details. The original ceiling and support columns provided the framework for a minimalist design concept - further accentuating the remarkable Victorian era craftsmanship. The green and blue glass combine with amazing results to create a surprising amount of warmth for such a large volume of space. The Loft is contemporary but the juxtaposition of the old and new creates a comfortable balance, giving the Loft the true feel of a home. Very spacious, clean , and modern living space within a 19 th century church. The location was perfect. We needed to be hospital most of the time but enjoyed the walks in the park and the concecenianxe if downtown.

The architecture and decor of this property is awe inspiring! We loved every moment of our stay. Visually the property is beautifully unique. It was clean and comfortable in every way. I would say it is probably more conducive to a group of girls and families with grown children than couples because of the openness. I would also advise that anyone sleeping upstairs not undress with the lights on....we were walking back from Local (a restaurant about 2 blocks away) in the dark and could see the beds upstairs clearly. (Sorry, Kevin, we had left the lights on!). Kevin, our host was friendly and helpful throughout the entire booking process as well as while we were there. The kitchen is well stocked with pretty wine and cordial glasses, serving trays, dishes, cookware, utensils, condiments and small appliances. The property is within walking distance of Forsyth Park as well as several restaurants and shops. We would definitely stay there again. Because it is in the Victorian section of Savannah, our walks included lots of ooohing and awwwing over the beautiful huge Victorian homes. One of our criteria for any trip lodging is outdoor space (balcony, deck or patio).....but we gave it up to stay at Sanctuary Place (Middle Loft) because of the unique nature of it and we didn't regret it....we got our fill of the beautiful weather on our walks.

An amazing unique experience

  • 5 of 5

The Middle Loft at Sanctuary Place was the most unique place I have ever stayed and we LOVED it! This was my first trip to Savannah with my Mom and Sisters and we are so glad that we booked this amazing loft. It's even more beautiful in person than in the pictures. The property manager, Kevin was very helpful and gave us a lot of great tips about how to get around Savannah. The Loft is within a short, pleasant walk to Forsyth Park which was absolutely lovely to walk through and it leads you right through several other pretty squares in the historic district of the city. If there was anything I would recommend to the property owners it would be to add towel hooks and better lighting in the bathrooms but I really have no other complaints. We had a wonderful time and I highly recommend staying here.

Most unusual space and we loved it there!

We Loved this place...The Location worked well. They do need to change the batteries in the remote, the tv in the family room did not work, a few bulbs were not working and they need a full length mirror.

Just a few basic things need to be attended too.

Would go back with out a moments thought...

Also we do like TV's in the bedrooms...

Wonderful and unique place

  • 5 of 5

This was an outstanding place to stay while in Savannah. I have stayed in many nice homes and hotels but this residence was truly unique and special. Not to mention it was clean, had great parking, quiet location, and close to town. I would surely stay her again.

Car: not necessary

This location, just off the southend of Forsyth Park has a lot of advantages. The first being the park itself: 10 acres of green-space lined with 200 year old, moss covered trees. 2 large playgrounds, tennis and basket ball courts and a large amphitheater with a cafe. The park serves as a center piece for downtown life and acts as a gateway to the historic squares that make up downtown. The farmers market is every Saturday and the park host many events throughout the year. Several local favorites on this end of the park too including the Sentient Bean Cafe and Brighter Day Grocery - 2 indispensable places for many downtown residents. A free shuttle to downtown proper is just a couple of blocks over on Bull St, the trolley stop is also super close.
