About Michael O'Malley
I am a Chicagoan who came to Sarajevo in 2001 to work with ABA/CEELI for one year. Visited Dubrovnik that first summer and decided that this was the place I wanted to live. Bought my place in 2003 and built the additional apartments in 2008. Have traveled widely and also spend a fair amount of time in Ireland, although the last two winters, I've travelled to India. I enjoy cooking, swimming, hiking, music, travel and interesting conversations over some good wine or home-made cordials.
Michael O'Malley purchased this Apartment in 2003
Why Michael O'Malley chose Zaton
I had not really heard much about Dubrovnik before first visiting in 2001 - my first summer in Sarajevo. Walked into the Old Town and my jaw dropped. After a couple of years of visiting Dubrovnik, I decided I would rather live near the Old Town than in it. I believe I made the right decision.
What makes this Apartment unique
Great place to kick back and relax. I never tire of the views of the sea. Changes every day. The song of the birds is steady. - depending on the season.Only one neighbor to the south of me and they only come occasionally. Olive groves to the north and Italian Cypress behind me. A two minute walk to the sea - great way to start the day with a swim; or walk up into the hills behind me for a more strenuous form of exercise. Two first-rate restaurants within walking distance - 20- 25 minutes away along the coast. Elefiti islands are quite nearby.Bus stop just across the street will take you to the Old Town. Also available is a boat which will carry you to the Old Town.

Michael was an amazing host. He invited us for drinks on his terrace which has an amazing view.
Fantastic location away from the maddening crowd in Dubrovnik. 10 minute drive from the city centre, uber recommended. Lovely flat with a great outdoor balcony area. Advisable to bring suitable shoes for beach as not sandy. Would highly recommend this property.
THANK YOU SEAN AND JACKY FOR CHOOSING VILLA ROSA. YOU WERE GREAT GUESTS AND IT WAS A PLEASURE MEETING YOU AND SPENDING TIME WITH YOU. HERE'S TO A MEET IN IRELAND!
Perfect host, location within a few mins. walk of fantastic bay(s) and 15 minutes into Dubrovnik
We stayed in the north apartment, no. 360136. (there are 2, both on second floor, ours was on the left when facing the property) having driven from Lithuania to tour Croatia. We could not have picked a better starting point in the country.
The stay gets 99 out of 100 ... and the only reason for not getting a perfect score is the issue of the road running in front of the property garden, by the parking area.
There are no sidewalks, and whilst one assumes by its size it is a village road, it is actually the main road from the north to Dubrovnik. Noise is a minor irritation, but crossing the road to get to the coast needs care, even to the local supermarket 50 mtrs away one needs their wits about them ;-) ... traffic is heavy and car-driver courtesy is not a common trait.
That said we had a great week, apartment was well maintained, fully equipped for our needs and one could not ask for a better host than Michael.
The coastline, beaches, rocky secluded bays, walks, villages, vicinity of Dubrovnik, etc., all positive. Local bars and restaurants are excellent for both service and quality.
Again we cannot but repeat Michael gives that little bit extra to make one feel welcome.
He is very knowledgeable and we were fortunate to have his company for several evenings, once on his terrace and the other time we were invited to join him and his friends at a local restaurant.. both memorable times.
Thank you Michael ... we may well return
Nijole and Martin
Thanks Martin and Nijole. Glad you had a good stay and hope to see you again.
Relaxing Croatian Getaway
A lovely, well appointed apartment with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Michael is very welcoming and helpful with plenty of information on the area and things to do. We were lucky enough to get invited to one of his wine and cheese nights which was a great time! The apartment is situated out of the hustle and bustle of Dubrovnik in the relaxing Zaton Mali. We used Ubers to get into Dubrovnik (15min drive) which was cheap and convenient but there are busses available from just across the road too. The area of Zaton (Mali and Veliki) is beautiful and picturesque with plenty of pebble beaches, restaurants and swimming spots within easy walking distance of the apartments. I would absolutely recommend Michaels apartments to anyone wanting to have an easy, relaxing and interesting trip to experience the beauty of Croatia.
Laura and Tim,
Thanks for the great review; it was fun meeting you and hanging out with you. Best of luck as you continue on your honeymoon. If I ever get to New Zealand, I will look you up. You were great guests.
Good location beautiful view
The apartment is well located, next to the bus stop, which takes 10-15 minutes to the bus station, Dubrovnik. There is also a supermarket two steps away.
The view from the balcony of the harbour is really lovely. Zaton Mali has a lovely harbour where you can swim easily, and is just a short walk from the apartment.
Michael is a conscientious and thoughtful host. He has great lists for activities, and recommendations and tips for travel.
Ourselves and the visitors in the apartment next door had a great fish supper one evening, with fish fresh from the market, which Michael drove us to, first thing in the morning., and then cooked on the barbecue. He was incredibly accomodating dropping us off in town and at the bus station a couple of times.
Dubrovnik is great, but we were glad to be a distance outside, in a quiet area.
The apartment is small but adequate. We were out mostly, but when we were there, we spent most of our time on the balcony, eating outside, and relaxing on the loungers.
It is a good base from which to see the surrounding sites of the area.
Lizzie and Julie,
Thanks for the great review. It was a pleasure hosting you.
Apartment Villa Rosa Zaton Croatia
We spent a wonderful week in mid-October at the beautifully situated Apartment Villa Rosa in Zaton, a short drive or bus ride from Old Town Dubrovnik. The comfortable apartment, which is fully stocked with dishes, pots and pans, utensils in case you like to eat in, looks out over a garden to the bay. The view is lovely from the balcony. Prior to our visit Michael sent us information about restaurants, things to do in the vicinity, and driving trips to Bosnia and Montenegro. We decided to take the one day trip to Montenegro and were happy we did. The Bay of Kotar is beautiful and the beautifully preserved old town is filled with interesting shops, restaurants, and historic sites. There is also a beautiful state-of-the art marina not very far away where you can enjoy a drink or a bite to eat and you will feel like you are in Monaco not Montenegro. It is definitely a must do! Michael is a very knowledgeable guide and thoughtful host. We had a thoroughly enjoyable time in Croatia and it was due in great part to Michael.
Thank you Ann and Richard. I truly enjoyed hosting you and yes our day trip to Montenegro was magical. I hope our paths cross again.
Villa rosa Dubrovnik? Zaton Croatia
Our Stay at Villa Rosa was the best part of our 3 week trip through the Balkans! It was away from the crowded Dubrovnik and just a 15 min drive or bus ride. The apartment was casual and very comfortable. We really enjoyed sitting on the porch and looking down at the harbor and bay! We took very refreshing swims and had a great time having lunch or dinner in the Harbor. The food was great at every restaurant we tried, and the staffs were all just terrific!
Michael arranged a day trip with a small boat to tour the coast and islands, highlighted by an amazing cave swim!
We enjoyed Michael so much and he was an awesome host! He made our trip just perfect! We would recommend his apartments to everyone!
Wine Tasting and vineyards in area . Kayaking. Boat trips on the bay and to the Old Town. Go to Montenegro - just 40 minute drive or go to Mostar in Bosnia to see the famous Bridge. Trendiness is a charming village with a quaint market in Bosnia - just 40 minutes by car. Michael can drive to these places in his new Air Conditioned car.
