About the property

4 Bedroom/3.5 Bath: Stay INSIDE One of Our Most Amazing Parks & Avoid the Lines!

Glacier Bear Retreat is a spectacular private residence, located INSIDE the Glacier National Park West Entrance, on the west side of Lake McDonald and just a short 7-minute walk to Apgar Village. This storybook cottage, built in 2013, has 4 bedrooms and can easily accommodate 9 people. (Please contact us if you have more than 9 people in your party to discuss options.) You’ll have special rooms for gathering together and cozy nooks for private time, in the perfect combination of indoor and outdoor living. With an outdoor fire pit, brand new hot tub, pool table, dartboard, hammocks, bicycles, yoga mats and more, you'll have everything you need for a perfect vacation when you stay at Glacier Bear Retreat!

Located on almost an acre of private property with Fish Creek and Apgar Creek flowing through the property, Glacier Bear is a quiet, private and peaceful haven. Aptly named “Retreat”, Glacier Bear is perfect for nature-loving families who are looking for a quiet place to reconnect with the natural beauty of Glacier National Park. (If you’re looking for a party house, this isn’t the place for you.)

In the more than 1,000,000 acres that comprise Glacier National Park, there are only 124 private landowners, and combined, these parcels equal less than 300 acres. Owning a home inside Glacier is rare; staying in one as a guest is even more so. And because you'll be staying inside the park, you won't need to wait in long lines - sometimes over an hour long - to get through the entrance station every day, letting you relax the entire time you're on vacation!

**Luxurious Amenities & Accommodations Over Three Floors**

This storybook cottage in the woods was designed and built as the perfect place to create memories, so your Glacier holiday is one of your best vacations ever.

From the welcome basket waiting for you, to the fully stocked bar and rec room, we want you to feel like you’re on vacation. From bathroom amenities like soap, shampoo and bubble bath, to the warm, cozy down comforters, we want you to feel like you’re at home.

The main floor contains the Great Room, the Dining Room, the Chef’s Kitchen, the Lazy Bear Master Suite with private bath, a powder room, and a hallway with reading nook and library shelves. Most of these books came from the original Grist home and date back as far as the early 1800’s. You are welcome to enjoy them with care while you’re here. From the main level you can also easily access the screened porch for outdoor grilling, dining or simply relaxing.

The upper level contains the Grist Room queen bedroom, the Bunk Room, a shared bathroom, and a small desk on the mezzanine above the Great Room.

The lower level Rec Room is your recreation destination with a Olhausen pool table, a dart board and our beautiful custom built bar, showcasing local Montana spirits and beers as well as fine wines from California, Oregon and Washington. The adjacent Media Room has a large flatscreen television and a selection of movies for your enjoyment. With two large Xorbee couches, you'll feel so cocooned in comfort you won't want to get up! And if you'd like to meditate or do some yoga, it's easy to create the space you need. The Garden Room queen bedroom and a separate bathroom finish off the level.

You can also experience Glacier’s beauty just by walking outside from the main level. Our wraparound screened porch has a large dining table with plenty of seating as well as a high quality gas grill. Outdoor living at Glacier Bear Retreat is as good as it gets - we have 6 bicycles, 2 closed kayaks, hammocks, yoga mats, a large fire pit, and even your own “private island” with picnic table all available for your use. Plus, our brand new Caldera hot tub is perfect for relaxing after a long day of hiking!

Upstairs or downstairs, indoors or out, you can be as connected as you want to be, whether that’s not at all or in touch with family, friends, or others using our fast wifi network, our landline with unlimited US long-distance calls, or your AT&T or Verizon mobile phone.

**Your Perfect Home Base For Glacier National Park**

Glacier Bear Retreat is perfectly located as your base for exploring the wonders of Glacier National Park. Just steps away from breathtaking Lake McDonald, you can fill your day with recreational boating (rentals available), swimming, or photographing the range of mountain peaks that frame the lake. You’re a few minutes walk from the town of Apgar, where you can grab a morning coffee, an ice cream, enjoy the offerings of the café or shop in the gift shops. We’re also connected to miles of paved trails leading into the town of West Glacier (about 3 miles away), so you’ll have ample opportunities for easy hiking and mountain biking too. Or, just hang out by the stream or on the screened porch, pick huckleberries, curl up in the window seat and read a book, or just rest, relax and enjoy the beauty that is Glacier Bear Retreat.

Drive the Going to the Sun Road for a host of photographic and hiking options. We’re happy to recommend guides for horseback riding, white water rafting, helicopter tours, fly-fishing and other recreational activities too. And, if you’re not interested in driving, you’re only a short walk from the Apgar transportation center where you can enjoy a ride on the historic Glacier Red Cars or take the free shuttle bus throughout the Park. A week simply won’t be enough time to enjoy all that Glacier Bear Retreat has to offer!

**Reserve Your Dates Before It's Too Late!**

Glacier Bear Retreat is a one-of-a-kind property. Rarely are properties INSIDE of Glacier National Park ever made available for others to enjoy. We’re opening our home to a select few families - and we’re looking to build relationships with repeat guests.

We take reservations well in advance and it’s not uncommon for Glacier Bear Retreat to be fully booked during the park’s peak weeks in July and August by early spring. We already have several weeks booked for 2017! If you are interested in creating memories at Glacier for your family or friends, we highly recommend you get in touch today.

**Winter Getaways**

Glacier Bear Retreat is available year round in all seasons. However, the snow season offers a unique opportunity to experience a remote retreat, as the road to Glacier Bear is closed from around January 1st-March 15th, depending upon the weather. (This means that you’ll have to walk 2/10th of a mile to access the property in the wintertime, but it will be totally private and oh so beautiful!) Imagine spending a week at a warm, cozy “Currier and Ives” storybook cottage in the woods… writing your next novel, brainstorming your next business idea, or just relaxing by the fire reconnecting with friends and family. For those who love the snow, snowman building, snowshoeing and cross country skiing are available right from your front door. Snowmobiling tours are available 15 minutes away, outside the Park.

About Gail Goodwin

My name is Gail Lynne Goodwin, and I'm known as the founder and Ambassador of Inspiration for InspireMeToday. I love to share inspiration with others and to be inspired!

In 2013 we purchased a rustic cabin, built by the Park ranger for Glacier National Park, in 1947. We wanted to keep the original structure, but as it hadn't been lived in for more than 40 years, we found it impossible. So, we lovingly removed the old home, and designed and built Glacier Bear Retreat- a brand new 3100 sq. ft. home.

It was my dream to create a Hansel and Gretel storybook cottage, while at the same time, respect the natural surroundings and tradition of Glacier National Park. We believe that it's important to take time to reconnect with what really matters in life, and we built Glacier Bear for families to do just that.

Gail Goodwin purchased this house in 2013

Why Gail Goodwin chose Glacier Park

Wait until you see Glacier Bear Retreat, and you'll understand. There's nothing quite like it! From the rugged beauty of the lake and mountains, to the peace and tranquility of the property, complete with two streams and soaring cedar trees, we believe Glacier Bear Retreat will capture your heart as it has captured ours.

Whether you're relaxing on a hammock or watching the stream go by, roasting a marshmallow on the fire or enjoying a cocktail on the enclosed porch, we've designed Glacier Bear with your comfort in mind.

In the winter time, being at Glacier Bear is like living in a Currier and Ives postcard... so peaceful and oh so beautiful!

What makes this house unique

Location, location, location.

This is the best of both worlds- in that Glacier Bear Retreat is a magnificent home, AND it's located INSIDE of Glacier National Park. Not a mile away, or a ten minute drive like a lot of other listings- it's IN the park. You'll sleep snugly in your luxurious surroundings, with the full splendor of Mother Nature at your doorstep.

Luxury cottage nestled inside Glacier National Park

  • 5 of 5

Glacier Bear Retreat is a rare find. This exquisite home has everything you could want for a fabulous summer vacation. It is extremely well built and spacious. Gail Goodwin is a fantastic property owner and manager – graciously tending to guests before and during their stay at Glacier Bear Retreat.

Our family loved kayaking on nearby Lake McDonald, biking the local trails, and soaking in the hot tub after a long day of hiking the beautiful and majestic mountains of Glacier National Park. We played pool, darts, puzzles and games, and we dined al fresco every evening on the spacious screened porch. We loved the reclining couches, the extra-soft blankets, the heated mattress pads, and the giant comfy Xorbee couches. The kitchen, pantry, bar, and bathrooms are extremely well stocked. Also, thanks for the great Wi-Fi – one of the few places in the park to connect!

We recommend The Crown of the Continent Red Bus Tour, which is an all-day event through Logan Pass to the Many Glacier area. Our favorite hikes included The Highline Trail and Granite Chalet at Logan Pass, Aster Falls near Two Medicine Lake, and nearby Avalanche Falls. Enjoy a day shopping, dining and riding the gondola to the top of Big Mountain at nearby Whitefish. We also highly recommend hiring Chef Tyler who will personalize and serve an amazing dinner. Don’t forget to go down to the Apgar Village dock after dark and look up – we saw shooting stars in every direction!

This is the perfect home base to rejuvenate yourself and connect with your family in what is undeniably a magnificent national park.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us. We're so sorry that your little one was a bit under the weather, and happy to hear that she's feeling fine again. 'I wouldn't trade one square mile of Glacier for all of the other parks put together. The vast valleys that you look down into, and the unbelievably great peaks and ridges rising above you, and the hidden passes and the surprising banks of snow, and the incongruous meadows on the high flats and the tumbling white streams, and the flowers and the silent little lakes around a bend- all have an isolation and a calm majesty that to me make Glacier Park more than just a place', wrote Ernie Pyle in a 1935 story in Home Country. Those who have experienced the magnificence of Glacier will agree.

Glacier National Park is the undisputed 'Crown of the Continent'. Its glaciers ascend steep peaks where mountain goats hike with you. Acres of lush green meadows plunge down jagged pinnacles, exposing some of the world's oldest stones. Waterfalls roar, ice cracks, indigenous grizzly bears and wolves roam the landscape, while bighorn sheep graze in the meadows. Two wild and scenic rivers splash along the park boundaries at 3,150 feet in elevation, making the six peaks over 10,000 feet appear to soar into the sky.

Slicing through the heart of Glacier is the infamous 'Going to the Sun Road'. As the park's biggest attraction, this road leads drivers on a skinny cliff shimmy into the craggy alpine, complete with wildflower wonderlands dancing with glaciers, waterfalls, mountain goats and to-of-the-world trails.

More than 700 miles of trails wind through Glacier's remote wilderness, making it a hiker's paradise. As the Crown of the Continent, the park's glaciers fuel North American's major rivers, with water from Glacier tumbling to Hudson Bay, the Gulf of Mexico and to the Pacific.

Glacier National Park has more than one million acres of wilderness, yet it contains less than 100 private cabins, together comprising less than 300 acres. It is the ultimate in privacy.

Glacier Bear Retreat is the first private in-holding in Glacier to have been sold in more than 24 years. We feel incredibly fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time, and due to that privilege, we also feel an obligation to share this little slice of heaven with other like-minded nature lovers who are looking to create a tradition in their families too.

We welcome you to share this rugged slice of nature's best.
