The Gardens is now offering 4 spacious one bedroom, fully furnished, upscale apartments for those wanting more than a just room with a bed while vacationing on Utila. Each of the units is located on a paved road within a privacy fence with security lighting for your convenience. Each of these units boasts two decks, one of which is privacy partitioned. The Gardens is located just up and off of the Main Street, close enough to be “in town”, but far enough from the hustle and bustle of Main Street to allow for peace and privacy. These apartments are designed in a home style setting with all of the amenities you’d expect. Full sized refrigerators, glass panel stoves with ovens, built in overhead microwave units, stainless sinks with full time hot water, wall mounted televisions complete with cable, tiled showers with hot water and, of course, Wifi for those that need to stay connected to the world at large. These apartments are self catering with all linens, cookware, and tableware. All you need to bring with you is your clothes, groceries and a toothbrush to be right at home!

Now part of Tony and Jo’s Laguna Vista, (see VBRO listing 229936!) you can expect more than to just be pointed to your room. We strive to make your vacation as effortless as possible. Standard services include arranging pick up and return to your point of origin on the island, and provisioning and stocking prior to your arrival, if requested. Massage is available within one minute’s walk for those wishing to indulge, and yoga mats are available upon request.

For those wanting intimate privacy, we have constructed an upscale, stand alone Cottage located within the privacy fence that surround the property. This Cottage is ideal for a couple wanting to get away from it all, yet have all of the amenities needed to feel pampered and at home. Custom cabinets in the kitchen were designed with ergonomics in mind making the kitchen immanently usable. The bathroom boasts a full height shower with ceramic tile with marble inserts and a glass block divider. The pedestal sink with wall mounted mirror/vanity optimizes good usage of space and and glass block recessed into the wall provides ambient light. The Cottage has quickly become a favorite with guests of The Gardens!

For those wanting to enjoy the diving that Utila is famous for we can provide a private dive boat with personal professional Dive Masters/IDC Instructors, or special arrangements can be made with select qualified local dive shops to include you in their groups. Certification in Diving is available from Beginner all the way to Advanced using Drager™ Dolphin Rebreathers and Closed Circuit Units. Diving alternatives such as horseback riding, boating, sailing charters, 4 wheel excursions or guided nature walks are only a request away.

The Gardens has access to the best in Catch and Release Deep Sea Fishing Charters, having custom boats on call with Captains who know and fish the Bay Islands.

About Tony & Jo

We are well known on the island, having been retired here for years. We have somehow become known as 'Tony & Jo' as if it was one name! Between having properties that we rent and being involved in the community at large we still find time for our 40' sailboat, traveling to other countries, visiting our children and living the lifestyle that is Utila. We ended up in the hospitality industry by accident and have enjoyed it ever since we got our first hotel on the island. Not knowing anything at all about the service industry we simply decided to use a plan based on what WE liked about some of the places we've stayed in around the world. So far, it seems to be working rather well!

Why Tony & Jo chose Bay Islands Honduras

Utila is where we live and we're not going anywhere, so... when this building came on the market a mere 125 paces from our home it seemed like it was ready made for us. We purchased the building and started a light remodel immediately, including the renovation of one building into The Cottage that we designed around an intimate place that we would like to stay in!

What makes this apartment unique

The Gardens is in a very quiet setting with a 6 foot privacy fence around the entire property. Security lighting is 24 hours for the comfort of our guests and the private deck attached is just that; private. Being close to 'downtown', but not in it means the five minute walk to Main Street is just enough to keep the hustle and bustle of traffic, noise, and congestion at bay. The Gardens is not just a box with a bed in one corner, it is a home away from home!

Beautiful apartment with the sweetest owners!!!

I have nothing but glowing remarks for The Gardens andn Jo and Tony. I arrived with multiple heavy suitcases and a cat that had just traveled 13 hours. They scooped me up from the ferry, helped me get kitty litter immediately and gave me a nice, personal tour of utila. Upon reaching my apt, I was super impressed and felt right at home. Jo and Tony have literally taken me under their wing and helped me get adjusted to life in utila. Anything I needed, they went out of their way to help me without a moment to lose. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at their apartment. It was bright, breezy, quiet, well-secured, beautifully landscaped and extremely comfortable. Great for anyone staying in Utila for a little while that wants a clean, beautiful spot removed far enough from the hustle and bustle but still close enough to shops, restaurants. Etc. Thanks for a spectacular experience :)

Our Time in Utila

Everyone says that Tony and Jo are wonderful people - they are correct. The gardens is an excellent place to stay. We stayed on the top floor, there was a living room and kitchen and then an air-conditioned bedroom. Well designed, functional space. We had two balconies - great for drying our stuff after diving. If you are going to Utila - you will enjoy the island - strongly consider staying at the Gardens, you won't be disappointed.

Wonderful place to stay on Utila

I rented one of the top apartments at The Gardens of Utilahomeaway for the month of May in 2015. The building is up the hill from the main drag so it’s close to the action without being in the middle of it. In other words, you can get a good night’s sleep here. The owners, Tony and Jo, are great. They have lived on Utila for years and they know everybody. If you need something, they will either get it for you, or know someone who can. Need a restaurant or dive shop recommendation? Talk to Tony and Jo. They were also wonderful when I got sick, stopping in to check on me and bringing electrolyte solution and Ensure to keep my strength up. Really sweet people.

The apartment itself was perfect. It was a one bedroom with ensuite bathroom and a full kitchen. I never turned on the AC since electricity is so expensive on the island, but each room did have a ceiling fan. Cross-breezes through the open windows also helped keep the heat down. The bed was comfortable and Blanca came in once a week to clean. Water isn’t free but it is pretty cheap and you can arrange with Tony and Jo to have it delivered by the jug as needed. Likewise with electricity. It is not part of the rent. You pay for what you use, which is great motivation to not leave the AC running all day while you’re on the beach. There is a meter in the apartment that shows how many KwH are available. Just give money to Blanca or Tony & Jo when the meter balance gets low and they will top off the account. Just for comparison sake, I used about 6 KwH a day on average, which equated to ~ $3/day.

Keep in mind that you are on an island in Honduras, so you have to set your expectations accordingly. Over the course of the month, there were electrical outages at least weekly, some lasting up to 6 hours. Also, the wi-fi could be frustratingly slow. Like I said, Utila is not 1st world so you can’t expect a 1st world infrastructure. That said, it is still a lovely place to relax and do some diving, and The Gardens is a great place to lay your head at the end of the day.

We loved it!! Can we do it again please?

The hosts made us feel very welcome indeed. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, the location was perfect for our needs. On our arrival Jo & Tony met us at the dock with a tuk tuk which was very helpful as we were loaded with dive gear. Offering to give us a tour of the local hotspots helped us to settle in straight way.

The location of the accommodation was a short walk from the main street & Captain Morgans Dive Shop, away from the bar noise. The room we stayed at in the Gardens was on the top floor, with lovely views over the well manicured gorgeous garden below. The kitchen has everything you could need, it is a home from home, the hosts were kind enough to provide some little extra's to start you off, washing up liquid, tea, coffee, salt, pepper, toilet roll.

The bedroom was cool in the heat & airy with a great bed, two windows taking advantage of the breeze, Finishing touches to the decor, including a television, a seating area, pictures & a little library of books made for a very comfortable stay, having mosquito guards at the windows meant that we didn't receive as many bites as most of the people we met!

For those needing to keep in touch with home, we found the internet connection great. We looked at all the other rooms... & we couldn't say that they were any different in style ... perhaps the ones on the right were a little cooler in the day as they didn't have as much direct sun... this is good right?! We stayed here 5 weeks & more than happy to recommend it.
