Timmerhouse is comfortable, private, and eco-friendly: built with timbers milled from our own trees, and surrounded by nature at its best with 12 forested acres, gorgeous views over a field and garden to the ocean and Beaufort Mountains, and a walk-on beach.

For those seeking to rest and relax we offer quiet & comfort: cozy up with a book by the wood-burning fireplace; lounge on the sunny upper deck or the large covered patio; go bird-watching or beach-combing or pamper yourself and book a massage.

When you want to venture out, launch your kayak from our beach, cycle the quiet country roads, walk the trails, swim in the ocean or 2 local lakes, explore local artisan studios and shops or play 9 holes on Denman Island's free links golf course.

Further afield, just a 10-minute ferry ride away, is Hornby Island with its famous sand beach at Tribune Bay. Another 10-minute ferry ride takes you to Vancouver Island where you will find Mt. Washington Alpine Resort for skiing and other winter sports as well as summer alpine hiking in Strathcona Provincial Park, mountain biking, fishing charters and whale watching.

Timmerhouse has a fully equipped kitchen and outdoor gas barbeque for those who like to cook. If you'd like a break from cooking our local bistro has delicious choices.

With a queen-size bed upstairs and 2 single beds down, we sleep 4 adults very comfortably.

There is truly something for everyone here and we look forward to your visit.

We have enjoyed a wonderful weekend full of peace and relaxation in this little corner of rural paradise. We loved the cozy elegance of your home, the breathtaking views and the gorgeous weather helped of course. Thank you for striking that perfect balance as hosts: attentive but not obtrusive.

We'll be back as soon as possible!!!

  • 5 of 5

Staying at Timmerhouse was so wonderful, our family of five returned two weeks later for another week and we'd love to go back today. Our family really appreciated the exquisite Island ecology. We learned a greener way of living and respecting the environment. We brought bicycles and spent both weeks exploring Denman and Hornby and still didn't see everything. Forget about the 100 mile diet and enjoy the 5 mile diet. There were roadside stands with honesty boxes (plums on Hornby just before the Cardboard house were divine). The farmer's market was marvellous and the recycling centre inspiring. Locally grown succulent peaches, cherries, beets, peas, lettuce and the list goes on. We bought wool spun from Denman sheep and made a gorgeous hat. We made pies with huckleberries and blackberries that we picked. We went snorkeling and sea kayaking and were enthralled with bald eagles, kingfishersm sand dollars, oysters, crabs, anemones, hermit crabs, otters, seals, starfish, sea stars etc. The local swimming lake is a treasure, so clean and the short walk through rain forest beautiful.

The owners have created a private and bright but cosy retreat with a huge patio to enjoy the view and the afternoon sun. Reading in the early morning on the upstairs balcony was sublime. The silence at night and the stunning star display were enchanting. Everything you could possibly need has been provided including two bookshelves of reading material. They owners were a fantastic source of information on local wildlife and ecology and their passion for this area of the world is contagious. They directed us to sea kayak rentals, the Produce Shack and the recommendation for the Kaffee Klatsch Bakery was spot on. Excellent meals from local ingredients (especially the non-appetizing sounding Vegetable Hash with poached eggs with yolks so creamy you'll come home and be ruined for store eggs) were divine. The Cardboard House on Hornby was a repeat stop for smoothies, eclairs, quinoa salad and enchiladas after mountain biking and running on exhilarating trails. The natural history information room near Tribune Bay was super. We made casts from fossils and learned about sealions vs seals, anemones and other animals. Heliwell Park was a treat and Tribune Bay looked like something from the Caribbean. Loved the ocean wildlife in the rocky portion of Tribune Bay. Obviously can't say enough! P.S. go golfing at the free golf course!

Quiet and Cozy Winter Escape

  • 4 of 5

We had a lovely stay at Timmerhouse during the holiday season, it offered the serene respite we were after. Our hosts were extremely friendly, willing to provide insight about where to go in the area, and eager to make sure we were comfortable. The home has beautiful views of the woods and water, an amazing fireplace, comfortable beds, and an easy-to-find location. The balcony and patio give you incredible outdoor space, and great views of snowy hills. The kitchen is well-equipped, though some of the cookware could be updated. The only thing that would have made this relaxing winter retreat more perfect is a hot tub!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review, Rachel. It was a pleasure having you and your mom stay with us over the holiday and we're glad you enjoyed your time at Timmerhouse. Brand new cookware is in now in place. The hot tub will have to wait for another year! :-) All the best, Shelley

A relaxing stay with the odd long-distance bike ride thrown in for good measure ;)

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Timmerhouse first week in September. We have visited the Gulf Islands before, each time without a car, so decided to rent bikes and get around Denman pedalling. Picked up the bikes from Hornby Island and had them for a week. Got to see everything we wanted to see and even the weather, which wasn't the best, didn't deter us!

Timmerhouse was comfortable and very relaxing. It had everything we needed for our stay. We didn't get to use the bbq or have meals on the patio as the weather wasn't really good enough, but we enjoyed sitting by the window (French doors) and taking in the view. There is so much natural light in the property and out of every window you see trees!

Highlights for us included Fillongley Provincial Park (lovely beach!), Graham Lake, and the Cardboard House Café (Hornby Island). We got our provisions from the grocery store on Denman (great selection of breads) and picked up a few things from the Co-op on Hornby Island when we were there - also visited the Hornby Island winery where we got a couple of bottles of very nice fruit wine!

Shelley and Morley were great hosts and went out of their way to help us - thanks for the ride from / to the ferry port on our arrival / departure (that was one journey we weren't able to do on the bikes!).

Hornby Island is a must if you stay on Denman - a short ferry ride away, and interesting to see the contrast between the two islands.

All in all an enjoyable stay in a lovely part of the world - we intend to go back and see more of it.

HOME away from Home

  • 5 of 5

We spent the weekend here on Denman island (also did a day trip to Hornby)....the place was great for our needs....we were out most days exploring, but cooked and slept at Timmerhouse. Very great, gracious hosts. Very quiet place to visit, great ocean front access!

Clean, and comfortable....we are not picky travelers, but do appreciate fine accommodations, and had it in our stay here. Bring your groceries from the mainland....Nanaimo, being the largest and closet shopping. There was a few spices there from the previous guest........The island has a small grocery store, but not a huge selection....the essentials. I recommend getting your eggs from locals, can't beat fresh eggs! For breakfast we went to the Guesthouse down the road.....great breakfast, unique café, but not for those that expect fine dining....we loved it. Great hike is to Tree Island, only accessible at low tide....lots to discover on the beaches! Not very sandy,(we were in Maui last year, so can't compare) bring good walking shoes. We will have to go back with our kids, as they would have a great time exploring!

Thank you to our host:)

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for staying with us and your kind review. It's important to us that our guests are comfortable and enjoy their stay. It was a pleasure having you and we'd welcome you back anytime! Best regards, Shelley For future guests - if you're coming from Vancouver or Victoria, shopping in Nanaimo for your groceries is a good idea - they have large grocery stores and a Costco. However, many of our guests fly into Comox Airport and Courtenay/Comox is the closest centre (25 km) to Denman Island and also has many large grocery stores and a Costco. There's a good seafood shop at Buckley Bay, where you catch the ferry to Denman, if you leave time to stop before your sailing. On island, June through Sept., West Isle Farm sells great, fresh produce, homemade hovis bread and blackberry jelly out of the Produce Shack and they also have the Chuck Wagon that makes delicious burgers, fries etc. (vegetarian options available). As well, there's the Saturday Market and, as mentioned, farm gate sales for fresh farm eggs. Filongley Provincial Park beach, on the east side of Denman, Sandy Islet at the north end and Village Point and Metcalfe Bay on the west side, all offer sandy beaches.

Timmerhouse, yes

  • 5 of 5

Nicest place we stayed on our trip to Vancouver Island this May. The house is perfectly positioned on the property, as if you are on your own tract on the ocean. It is built with local materials, including beautiful wood flooring, staircase and cabinets. The host(s) completely respect your privacy but are also willing to provide a wealth of information about the area if asked. Charming and down to earth.

Two thumbs up, from two picky travelers!

Quiet, reclusive ambiance

  • 4 of 5

Timmerhouse exceeded our expectations in its comfort and interior / exterior atmosphere. We loved the huge patio although is was pretty hot in the afternoon. We felt like we were camping in the forest but in luxury with the abundance of windows and fresh air through the house. We enjoyed walking down to the water at high tide for a swim and then later on to watch the sunset over the gorgeous waterfront scene overlooking Vancouver Island. Shelley & Morley were very friendly and helpful hosts, and things at the house were nicely organized and very clean. We would love to return sometime.
