Calypso was designed and built from scratch to be a vacation home, and is optimized for larger groups. It is not a personal residence that is rented out. Everything about Calypso contributes to one goal: providing guests with the best and most fun vacation accommodations on Elbow Cay.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!
At Calypso, if you were any closer to the ocean, your feet would be wet! With fabulous views, one of the prettiest sandy beaches on the island, great swimming/snorkeling, and a prime central location close to town, Calypso is one of the most desirable rental houses on the island.
RUBBING ELBOWS NOT ALLOWED!
Calypso was designed from scratch for multiple families or large groups, with plenty of room to spread out and an open floor plan. No guest ever feels crowded with the large decks, generous common areas, and widely separated bedrooms. Partiers and sleepers can co-exist, and parents can rest easy knowing their children are safe and having fun without being underfoot. Whether you prefer quiet or a circus, there are many choices of how and where to spend your time – without even leaving the house!
FORMAL AND STUFFY - NOT!
Calypso is kick-off-your shoes casual and invites you to relax and have fun. Comfort rules. With a warm island motif, whimsical art that makes you smile, and comfortable furnishings, all your worries will soon be forgotten. A little sand on your feet – no problem - Calypso can handle it!
LET THE SUN SHINE AND THE BREEZES BLOW WHEREVER YOU CHOOSE TO GO!
Sunny or shady, breezy or calm, everyone can find a place to call their own. Sun worshippers love the steamer chairs on the ocean deck, which runs the entire width of the house. Also on the ocean side is a large shaded gazebo for those of fairer skin. A spacious landside screened porch and deck are perfect for enjoying fresh air when the breeze is a bit strong off the ocean, offering pleasant views of the yard’s palm trees and tropical vegetation. And those of a culinary persuasion need not feel left out as the kitchen area features awning style windows that open onto the porch. Whether flipping a burger on the deck’s gas grill, enjoying the vivid sunset sky in a porch rocker, or preparing an island feast in the well equipped kitchen, you will enjoy innumerable amenities that insure your stay is fun and memorable.
NO MORE “WHO GETS THE NICE BEDROOM?” DILEMMAS !
All 6 bedrooms are nice, spacious, and airy with lots of windows and great views. Dressers, wardrobes, and built-in closets provide plenty of storage and places to put your things. Every bedroom has its own private bathroom with shower and two sinks. Don’t settle for a bed in a closet that is labeled a bedroom!
TO TV OR NOT TO TV, OR DO THE GAME ROOM?
Yes there is a TV, and only one, and it’s a good one -in a private room, upstairs and away from all the activity. Perfect for an evening movie, or watching that 'can't miss' ballgame. Some guests have even been known to read a book in this cozy “away room”.
Rather get loud and rowdy, but don’t want to disturb others? Try the game room on the ground floor with its ping pong, foosball, and pool tables. A second refrigerator is perfect for keeping selected beverages handy.
NO POWER, WHAT DO WE DO?
Power outages happen in the Bahamas, especially in the summer when it’s hot and humid with no breeze and electrical demand is at its peak. There is no flushing of toilets, no showers, no relief from the heat (Ceiling fans need power too!), and food spoils. Power outages usually don’t last long, but YOU DON’T KNOW, and you have NO CONTROL! Who wants to lose a single vacation minute with these worries? Power outages are a non-event for guests of Calypso. The professionally maintained generator starts/stops automatically and provides all the power needed, even for AC.
WATER FROM ROOFS? BIRDS, PLEASE STAY AWAY!
While rain water collected from roofs and stored in cisterns is normal for most island houses, all Calypso water comes from a well and is purified by a reverse osmosis system with a 7,000 gallon reservoir. NO water is collected from the roof, so guests enjoy the cleanest water possible. The RO unit is professionally and scrupulously maintained, and completely automated.
AN OCEANFRONT HOUSE WITH A BOAT SLIP?
Guests are assured of a convenient and protected place to keep their boat at an assigned slip in Nigh Creek, between the house and town, a very short distance (.4 mile) away. Additional slips are available. (Oceanfront rental houses with docks/boat slips are very rare on Elbow Cay, and finding an available spot at the public docks can be a real challenge.)
PLEASE DON’T TAKE ME OFF THE GRID!
Some folks are happy to disappear from family, friends, and work while on vacation. That’s fine, but others may want to stay connected. (And there is always that “off/on” switch.) Calypso gives you the choice with a very reliable broadband internet connection and in-house wireless network. FREE! So don’t be embarrassed - surf the internet, immerse yourself in emails, and Skype those calls if YOU want. At a lower level of communications sophistication, Calypso also has a telephone and VHF radio for local calls.
HOW ABOUT A POOL???
Well, Calypso has a fantastic natural pool right outside the back door... called the Atlantic Ocean. But not everyone is comfortable in waves and open water, and/or children need to be watched more closely, so a new deck and fresh water pool are being added by the end of 2016.
WHO’S IN CHARGE?
Calypso has very active owners that check email regularly, respond quickly, and are always ready to assist. Do not underestimate the value of this level of attention! No one else has a more vested interest in your visit being trouble free and enjoyable. While the owners personally respond to all VRBO inquiries and have the final say on reservations/rates, guests will eventually be directed to Elbow Cay Properties to confirm reservations, collect information on your party, and coordinate your arrival with the caretaker. This rental agency is very experienced, very professional, and is an important on-island contact. Once you have made a reservation, they become your primary contact until you are actually in the Bahamas and meet with the caretaker. His responsibility is to keep the house in good order and ready for your arrival, to assist in getting to/from the ferry and the house, familiarize you with the house, and to help you with any concerns that need direct assistance. Of course, the owner is always glad to remotely assist.

We live in New Bern and Greenville in eastern NC, and are a university professor, attorney, dentist, and realtor.
We enjoy boating and travel, and have watched our children grow up visiting Elbow Cay. We are very hands-on owners, visiting the house several times a year and keeping close tabs on the property at other times.
Bill Hand purchased this house in 1999
We honeymooned on Elbow Cay 30 years ago, fell in love with the island, and returned regularly until purchasing a older 'character' home in 1999 with our good friends and current partners. Months later the house was destroyed by Floyd. With such a great location, we spent years designing and building a new house to complement the site while caputuring some of our favorite features of the original house. Calypso is the proud result.
What draws us to Elbow Cay is the peace and quiet, friendly people, natural beauty, and safety. There are no cruise ships, resorts, compounds, or mega-hotels. One can walk anywhere on the island at any time of the day or night and feel completely safe. In all our years, we have never locked a door while there. We love walking in town and not dodging cars and motorcycles (Motor vehicles are prohibited from Hope Town except for commercial deliveries.) Golf carts, especially quiet ELECTRIC ones, are such a pleasant and non-intrusive way of getting around the rest of the island. And people are so friendly - everyone waves when passing!
Naturally, since this is an island, boating is a major part of your activies, and the surrounding waters are just phenominal. Even an inexperienced boater, or someone unfamiliar with the area, can travel most anywhere safely and in protected waters.
Most of the locals on the island depend upon second home owners and visitors for their livelihood, so they are unusually willing to provide advice or render assitance. Surliness typical of some of the more heavily visited parts of the Bahamas just doesn't exist on Elbow Cay.
Our families are well traveled, and we could spend our vacations most anywhere. The fact that we have never tired of Elbow Cay and are always eager to return is the greatest endorsement we can give.
Without you, our renters, we would be unable to enjoy this island paradise, so we have every incentive to make YOUR experience a positive one.
Rather than repeat what you can read elsewhere, here are few of the things we ALWAYS do.
We pick up a few cold ones on the way to the ferry from the airport and as soon as the ferry leaves the dock, toast our arrival, for now we KNOW beyond all doubt we will shortly be in Hopetown. We deliver our bags to the house and head straight to the Harbour's Edge for anything conch - whether it be fritters, chowder, burgers, fingers, salad, whatever. You can't beat the food and the view of the harbour and that stunning lighthouse.
With at beverage in hand, we head south in the cart to tour the island, with maybe a visit to Firefly, the Abaco Inn, or Sea Spray to freshen up our beverages or enjoy a snack of something locally caught and prepared.
We cruise to neighboring islands for meals at Cracker P's on Lubbers Quarters, Pete's Pub in Little Harbour, Nippers on Guana Cay, or Hibiscus on Man O War, where a boatyard and canvas shop stop are mandatory.
We walk into town a LOT, whether for a cup of excellent java at the HT Coffee Shop, fresh bread and pies at Vernon's, shopping at one of the many small gift stores, or just to enjoy the cooing of the doves and picturesqe houses.
We snorkel at Sandy Cay, one of the areas prettiest and well protected reefs, and walk the beach at Pelican Cay. The thundering surf crashing onto the oceanside coral can give one a new perspective on the perils of being shipwrecked on a reef, and the tideline is edged with colorful tiny shells that are miniature treasures.
We visit the famous red and white striped light house, one of a very few in the WORLD that are still hand wound and burn kerosene. The view or the island from the top is spectacular, and sure to drive a camera buff into a frenzy of picture taking.
We visit the Wyannie Malone museum to renew our respect for the town founders and the history of this truly unique place.
Lastly, we enjoy our house. Everything else is a bonus!

PLENTY OF ROOM AND MANY PLACES WHERE YOU CAN FIND SOLITUDE WHEN YOU WANT IT. THE LOCATION WAS GREAT ON THE ISLAND. ALSO ALL OF THE VENDORS THAT WERE SUGGESTED, BOAT, GOLF CART WERE VERY ACCOMMODATING. HAVING OWNED BEACH FRONT PROPERTIES IN NORTH CAROLINA FOR OVER 50 YEARS, THE HOUSE WAS IN SUPRISING GOOD SHAPE. It was a perfect house of group. I had my two daughters' families including 6 teenage boys. They loved the playroom and of course the beach. The TV reception was not good. WIFI was good. I would have liked to know that we would need a lot of additonial supplies such as paper towels, toilet paper, etc. before we arrived so we could have purchased them in Marsh Harbor. I would rent this again.
Calypso was just wonderful and it worked out perfectly for the occasion (50th anniversary celebration). The house is really well thought out. The design is simple, comfortable and maximizes all the best attributes of the location. Kudos to the decorator. We loved all the little touches in the house and the furniture (both inside and out) was exactly what it should be. Everything screams beach vacation house and that’s exactly what we were looking for! The owners clearly thought through all aspects of an Abaco trip and every piece of guidance they provided was spot on. The washer and dryer were key as was the ice maker. Everyone having there own bathroom was also a big plus. Things were perfect! Both Town and the boat slip were a quick convenient golf cart ride away and it was GREAT to have On Da Beach (Bar/restaurant) just a short walk down the beach. The house is perfectly set up and I have every hope of returning. Thanks to the owners for all the work and preparation they obviously have put in over the years to make a renter’s experience special. What must be all their cherished experiences at Calypso over the years clearly came through in our stay. We’ll always have fond memories of our visit to Calypso. Everyone in our group, from children to grandparents just flat out loved the house!
Outstanding in every way! Our family thoroughly enjoyed our stay Calypso with an experience made even more special by the owners' hospitality. The beautiful home is well well planned and well appointed with everything we needed for a perfect vacation. From the beautiful ocean view and sandy beach to the spacious kitchen open living area, we could not ask for more. The setting was private and quiet, except for the soothing sounds of the waves. The access to a nearby boat slip made easy the daily adventures on the water. Elbow Cay is special - and Calypso made it perfect for us.
What a treat! We along with five other couples stayed in this incredible house. Four of the rooms were "master suites" and the other two bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. The view is breathtaking and the house was a wonderful place to entertain and cook. In fact, we enjoyed staying at the house more than we did going to the restaurants on the island.....All the amenities of home. The beach in front of the house was beautiful and deep and we felt like we were the only people on the island. It was a wonderful getaway.

My son's deployment wish became a reality. All of his family and best friends spent a week of 'pura vida' in Hopetown at your Calypso 'haven'. I am SOOOOOO GLAD we chose Calypso House! It was perfect! We definitely needed the spacious living area. It's obvious you put a lot of thought when building.
Every moment was cherished, whether sitting around the dining table sharing stories, having a family toast in your kitchen, or a cuban-style cigar gathering...it was epic. The sound and smells of the ocean put you in automatic relax mode. Afternoon siesta in the hammock...Priceless!

Snorkel off the beach, SCUBA diving arranged through on-island dive shop. Rent kayaks, surfboards, bicycles, and boats locally. Golf at Treasure Cay or Bakers Bay - a 40 minute boat ride away. Sail boat day charters. Conching and crawfish with local guides. Many choices for offshore fishing or bonefishing.

Credit card payments and spread payments (deposit now and balance later) can be arranged for an additional 7.5% fee(to compensate for Bahamian bank fees).
