Why Jenifer Cartland chose Southwest Michigan

In Kindergarten, we were asked to draw a picture of our favorite places in the world. I drew the swing set at my grandparents' cottage in northern Michigan. I still have that picture. Whenever we are at our little cottage in Stevensville, I am transported right back there to my grandparents' cottage . . . and only 90 miles from home.

What makes this cottage unique

We love hiking at Grand Mere all year round. In the winter, the sledding is fantastic. In the summer, the beaches are so clean and beautiful (and never crowded).

Great vacation!

This was our second year at Hidden Pond! Everything was wonderful. Our only suggestion is better upkeep on the outside area so the pond can truly be enjoyed. Otherwise we highly recommend this cottage!

Summertime at Hidden Pond

  • 5 of 5

My last review of Hidden Pond was submitted for a wintertime visit (see Winter Wabi-sabi Weekend Getaway); a retreat so well loved that I decided to return for a summertime experience. Since my last assessment was focused mainly on the cottage itself, I will refrain from repeating those same comments this time and instead focus on location and activities. Suffice it to say the house remains as charming as ever with the added bonus of a wifi upgrade. (Thank you Jenifer!)

In my opinion, this cottage could not be situated more perfectly. Although it appears to be quietly tucked away in the woods, it is actually only minutes from the highway and maybe a five minute drive to Meijer’s store, gas stations, etc. But the main attraction for me is its close proximity to Grand Mere State Park and beach. As a lover of dogs, nature and travel, I search for places on earth such as this. I, along with my human and canine companions, had a glorious day at this beach that seems mostly untouched by civilization. There are no concession stands, no beach gear rentals and no obnoxious crowds; just water, sand, dunes, artsy pebbles, and wild grass. Aahh nature.

After we had enough sun and sand for the day, Hidden Pond was there to welcome us back home. I can’t speak for everyone, but I am famished after a day at the beach and this place calls for fun collaborative culinary efforts. The large kitchen provides ample space for preparing fresh summer salads and tropical drinks while the deck serves as a stage for outdoor grilling and gathering around a meal with those you love. While some of us cut fruit and veggies, others lit up the charcoal and watched over the sizzling meats with the noise of laughter from a softball game transpiring in the large yard. Conclude this day with a moonlit walk back to the beach where you watch a display of shooting stars descend in the sky and you set yourself up with one of those moments in time when you realize you are experiencing perfection.

I will end this review with a few recommendations to those who wish to seek their own perfect moments at Hidden Pond and Grand Mere. Wear water shoes to protect feet against beach pebbles. Do not haul unnecessary things to the beach as there is some hiking involved. Bring an insulated backpack (I like Picnic Time backpacks) filled with drinks and snacks. I also like the zip up picnic blankets with carry handles. I found the mosquito repellent adhesive stickers to work very well too. Enjoy!

Perfect for a family or a quiet place for reading and relaxing.

  • 5 of 5

We went for a few days of R and R and upon arrival this was what we expected. We had coffee every morning on the deck and walked the beautiful grounds We enjoyed the quiet and watching deer and rabbits in the yard. The cottage is well stocked with everything you need and is neat and comfortable. We did not use the fire pit but was ready for use. We will go back again and enjoyed our time at the cottage.

Lovely for Little & Big People

  • 4 of 5

We spent 3 days in MI with our nephew and 2 nieces. It was their first time to MI. They loved the close by beach access, the games at the cottage and "exploring" in the back yard. We loved using the kitchen to cook and eat in. While a little older, this cottage is perfect for a few days get-a-way. The kitchen is pretty well stocked. There is extra bedding, also. We were a little sad not to use the fire pit. At the time, it was a turtle egg nest.

Cozy, intimate and convenient woodsy location

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Hidden Pond. We came to the area in January for a House hunting trip for a potential move and found this charming place central to St Joseph and Stevensville and close to Meijers and expressway. Lovely woods setting and so

cozy to come home to at night and enjoy the wood burning fireplace and fully stocked kitchen. We'd love to come back as it would be perfect for a small family get away with chairs and firepit outside too, and close drive to the beach.

Winter Wabi-sabi Weekend Getaway

  • 4 of 5

Wabi-sabi: “the art of finding beauty in imperfection and wisdom in nature. This cozy cottage tucked away in the trees between highway 94 and Lake Michigan became the embodiment of the wabi-sabi philosophy to me. Rented as a weekend getaway birthday present to my husband, we were able to bring along our canine family of 2 and the last-minute addition of my lovely neighbor and her daughter. It was a late cold winter’s night when we arrived but the warmth of this home immediately took the chill off of our bones. After settling in, my husband popped the cork off of an effervescent red wine to toast the start of our mini-vacation and set flame to a fat log in the fireplace. Our toast was soon followed by a hearty round of warm homemade meatballs and fresh Italian bread enjoyed at the large farm-kitchen table. It was a beautiful beginning to a weekend full of great conversation, laughter, a wonderful walk with the dogs to the lake (where red birds and blue jays were frequently spotted), creative culinary teamwork in the kitchen, morning coffee and evening wine by the fire. So why, wabi-sabi? You may have noticed, from other reviews, this rental is not without its “imperfections”. As another reviewer pointed out, the bathroom is a bit dated (think old-time medicine cabinet with sliding doors and built in lighting behind a yellowed shade) and the linoleum tile is peeling/cracked in some places. But who cares? I was too distracted by the clean fluffy rugs on the floor and the cute wooden pedestal seat sitting behind the bathroom door. Several reviewers have commented on the small tv. This is not an exaggeration. The tv is small, like mini-van tv kind of small, but there are games and books stuffed in little nooks and crannies all over the house and nature outside. If big screens and movie watching marathons are your thing, I suggest bringing your own flat screen but you risk the sacrifice of hearing the laughter of a child while you build a homemade pizza with her. Nothing matches in this house. I do not believe there is a single item - lamp, table, pillow, or quilt - that came from the same place or even time era and yet it all works and is staged so creatively and thoughtfully. Maybe it is my overly romantic imagination, but I felt this house was sharing its history and authenticity while it welcomed my own imperfect self. This did not feel like a rental to me. It felt like the home of a creative and loving aunt helping me reset my life's priorities.
