Hello, we are Al & Linda Carlsten living in the Charleston, SC area for over 30 years. We are transplants from the beautiful but cold State of Wisconsin. We have the best of both worlds with the beaches of South Carolina and the Mountains of Western North Carolina.
Linda Carlsten purchased this cabin in 2008
We have vacationed in the Cashiers, NC area for about 10 years until the cabin bug bit us. It is a beautiful place to escape the hot summers of Charleston. It also gave us a place to find a little cold weather and snow in the winter when we get a little homesick for Wisconsin.
After renting in the area with 2 other couples someone always got the bad room. There is no drawing straws for a good bedroom because they are all exceptional in comfort and décor. Each room is unique.
Our beautiful log cabin with a red tin roof is great for every season even when it rains. We are nestled in the woods at the end of the cul-de sac, the highest point in Whisper Lake with views of Hogback Mountain, Mountain Laurel and flowering Rhododendrons.
Life couldn't be better stargazing, while in the hot tub. Watching a roaring fire in the outside fireplace, drinking a glass of wine makes it complete. Our 4 grand-children love to roast marshmellows and make samores just before going to bed.
We love having our morning coffee on the deck watching the fog roll in over the mountains. The afternoons are a pefect time for a tea party on the loft porch with our three grand-daughters.
High Whisper was a gorgeous home with all high quality furnishings and accessories. We literally just brought clothes/food and everything else was provided within the house. The seclusion and views were just what we were wanting for our vacation. Although we were nestled on top of a mountain there were so many things near by to do; such as: hiking, swimming, zip lining, shopping, waterfalls, golf, restaurants, and bars (our favorite was Sapphire Whiskey Tavern). We spent most of our evenings lounging in the hot tub and enjoyed the beautiful skies. Plenty of room for the whole family to be together and just as many spaces to find a secluded spot to relax. Highly recommend High Whisper and will definitely keep in mind for future vacations.
The owners also provided us great resources in knowing about things that were happening in the area. They were accessible by email and text throughout the week for any questions that we had.
My family of four recently stayed at High Whisper for one week during 4th of July along with another family of 5 who joined us for 3 nights from Raleigh ... just as the reviews had mentioned ...we were not disappointed. This was our second summer booking a home near Cashiers area ... last year, our town home at Trillium was beautiful but on the smaller side, so we were looking for something with a bit more elbow room and direct mountain views outside our back porch and windows.
We decided to try Sapphire Valley this year and based on all the reviews I was drawn to High Whisper. Now, being a South Florida girl, I was particularly interested in soaking in a hot tub while relaxing under the stars and enjoying the crisp mountain air and views. High Whisper made this a reality for me!
Firstly, as we arrived to the home for our 4th of July week celebration, we were met with a special delivery box at the door step from the owner Linda, and to our surprise, the box was filled with 2 American flags on sticks, a 'Freedom" decorative pillow and two red/white/blue kitchen hand towels. It was completely unexpected and so thoughtful...we were so impressed.
Everything you've heard in the reviews is all true - the house has everything you would ever need for a vacation getaway ... kitchen is fully stocked with everything you could ever need, you just buy groceries. Beds are super comfy and each space is just perfect. We spent a lot of our time in the Kitchen and out back on the porch in the hot tub to be honest.
For our kids (ages 8 and 6), the downstairs game room complete with pool table, air hockey and DVDs was a hit also. I think my kids watched Harry Potter 2-3 times that week. lol.
In my opinion, there aren't enough pictures of the mountain views ... I was a little unsure what our views would be like, but they are beautiful especially from the backyard porch so no worries.
Linda even provides an App for each renter to download prior to their trip and it literally answers every question you could ever have about the house and surrounding area. We didn't need to call the owner once during our trip! The only regret I have is that we were so busy river rafting the Nantahala, hiking and visiting local waterfalls/rivers, that we ran out of time to enjoy the nearby lake down the road and the canoe/kayaks that come with the rental. Next year for sure!! Can't thank Linda enough for her hospitality and kindness. You won't be disappointed!!!
This house was great for our family reunion. Plenty of space for 10 and guests at our big dinner. The house is so well stocked. All the little things you forget were supplied we only had to bring the food. The lower level has a pool table and tv which was a big hit not only with the young folk but the old pool sharks.. The beds were soo comfortable and linen really great. It was so easy to stay here. I would definitely want to stay in this house again. The owners of this house are fabulous, so friendly and really want clients to have a worry free and relaxing time. We also enjoyed Ingles, the local grocery store. Had them roast a turkey and bake a ham both delicious.
We stayed at High Whisper with a group of 9 friends. There was room for all of us in this beautiful setting! The very comfortable beds, the fully stocked kitchen and the various places to spread out to relax made for a great time. The hot tub was a real bonus as was the outdoor fireplace. The owners were wonderful and made arranging a group trip very easy. Highly recommend High Whisper!!!
Our three families take a vacation every year to the beach, however this year we tried something different! Being at High Whisper was a vacation in itself with a pool table, hot tub, air hockey, big screen TV downstairs for the grands and loads of games. The gourmet kitchen had every appliance and quality pots and pans you would need to cook a nice meal every day! The beds were very comfortable with all quality bedding like Biltmore sheets. The highlight every evening was enjoying the outdoor fireplace (all the wood furnished) with our family, making s'mores or just relaxing with hot chocolate or cups of coffee. The days were spent at the pool, putt putt or playground at the Sapphire Valley Resort just down the road with passes. I even took a basket weaving class! Highlands and Cashiers were close by and we discovered treasures at Jackson Hole Gem mining. There is no way to put on paper the quality time we had with our family but we will definitely be planning our next outing at High Whisper! Quiet neighborhood, surrounded by woods and a porch with hammock to take it all in! You won't be disappointed if you choose this home away from home!!
We had a wonderful time at High Whisper. We've rented a lot of vacation houses over the last 10 years, and we've never stayed anywhere that was so well-equipped (especially the kitchen). The weather was foggy and rainy for most of the week, but we had a great time indoors and there was plenty for the kids to do (the basement is perfectly set up for kids to play on their own). The views were beautiful when the weather cleared, and it was easy to drive to Sapphire or Cashiers for groceries or a meal out. Owners were great and very helpful.
Gem Mining, Waterfall exploring, whitewater rafting, snow tubing and sking. We have numerous hiking books to explore the many waterfalls in the area. The two largest trout on record in the state of NC were caught in the Horsepasture River near by.
