About James Rick Stinson

My name is James Rick, and although I've traveled the world many times over, Costa Rica has been a favorite of mine ever since I first came in 2008. I've lived in Jaco Beach and I'm a big fan of surfing, so I was very happy to find a locals 'secret spot' in Manuel Antonio to compliment my love for this house and sanctuary just a couple minutes away. If you have any hesitation at all about staying here, feel free to ask any questions you might have. My goal when you book the Happy Jacana is to make sure you have the best / happiest experience possible from the time you arrive to the time you leave. Feel free to ask questions or share any feedback you might have before your stay, during your stay and especially afterwards!

James Rick Stinson purchased this house in 2008

Why James Rick Stinson chose Puntarenas

Whether you just want to give your family or friends an experience of a lifetime or you're looking for an amazing place to stay before you continue on your journey through Costa Rica, you won't want to miss an opportunity to stay at Villa: Happy Jacana and if your budget allows, go for the FULL experience with chef and massage therapy, you'll be glad you did.

What makes this house unique

Costa Rica is often referred to as the gem of central america, and Manuel Antonio, the gem of Costa Rica. The property is uniquely situated at the start of Manuel Antonio , just after Quepos, so you get the best of both worlds. 5 minutes from Quepos airport, a 15 min. drive to Dominical, 45 minutes away from world class waves in Hermosa and the buzz of Jaco Beach. Plus there's many places just a short drive away if you want to actively explore the are awhile you're here.

Guestbook comments from the manager

From the moment I drove up to the house to the moment I left, it was like a dream vacation come true. When I first saw the place I knew I was in for something special because it was nestled near the top of a mountain overlooking the lush tropical forest and I could see the ocean from almost every room in the house. James and his girlfriend were so friendly and accommodating, they really made me feel at home. They knew how to make sure I did not have to think about anything the entire trip.

My room had an amazing view and a great hot tub jacuzzi, as if I needed it after their live in masseuse rubbed me down daily. I was amazed at the variety of foods that the chef cooked for each meal and was so impressed at how fresh all the foods and juices were. Some days I just laid out by the pool and others went on a hike recommended by James and was lucky enough that he even took me to his private secluded surfing spot one day.

The internet worked great and the background music selection topped off the vacation. I really wanted to thank James and would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking to get away for a healthy retreat. I can't wait to go back!

Recommended for: adventure seekers, age 55+, families with young children, people with disabilities, families with teenagers, girls getaway, pet-friendly, sight seeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway

A great stay at Jacana Villa

  • 4 of 5

There were a few minor issues with the house but the friendly staff quickly attended and corrected them. The views were amazing and we really enjoyed the monkeys visiting us on the balcony. The living room glass walls opened and it was awesome to watch the AFC play off from the swimming pool. The people in Costa Rica are very friendly and we felt extremely safe at all times. We will certainly revisit once again. Beautiful.

Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

This property matched the website description and photos perfectly. The view of the ocean and forests is spectacular; the location is great –it’s a short walk into town where there are two grocery stores and plenty of restaurants and shops. The ocean is a bit of a walk, but definitively doable. Taxis to other locations are easy to obtain. There are plenty of activities to choose from (the sailboat/snorkeling cruise was my favorite; and if you go to the national forest park in Manuel Antonio, either take a tour or be sure to get a guide at the entrance to point out many sights and wildlife that you would otherwise miss. We enjoyed the balcony and the swimming pool daily. Overall, excellent value for the price, which I would highly recommend (and have recommended to friends). The property was clean and well-maintained; housekeeping came daily. Ana, the property manager is great - we had several occasions where we needed to contact her for questions and a couple of times we had issues with the house (like when one of the AC’s broke down and another time when we ran out of gas for the BBQ), and she addressed our needs promptly, satisfactorily, and in a friendly manner.

Poorly maintained. Not as advertised.

  • 1 of 5

By any stretch of the imagination this is not ocean view. Location not convenient. But the biggest disappointment was the condition of the property. Showers, light fixtures, air conditioners, sliding doors didn't work. A sliding door was broken by the group renting before us. We were told it would be repaired immediately. It never was. This means we could not close up or lock up the property the entire time we were there. We disagree so vehemently with good reviews of this property that we are suspicious of their truthfulness. We have rented houses in a lot of locations and never had a worse experience with a property. Such a shame as the country and people were beautiful.

Owner's Response: 1. Whenever any issues are reported to me I make sure they are taken care of ASAP – gas cylinders are delivered within an hour of my being told something is wrong and if ACs break down they are taken care of within 24 hours or less. All ACs were checked prior to arrival and after and they were all found to be in working order. No AC issues were reported to me. They were checked again and all were found to be working. 2. Showers are always checked to ensure they are all receiving hot water before every check in. No issues were reported to us or they would have been taken care of. 3. Light fixture in room above carport is being replaced – the current one has a short in it and it causes the lights to sometimes not come on. 3. The sliding glass door is being replaced this week since a new one had to be ordered and made. At no moment was the door not enabled to close. ________________________________________ Ana J. House Needs An Overhaul

  • 2 of 5

I have to agree with reviewer Dani E. While the manager was attentive to our needs--but never actually showed up on the property--we had issues and had to ask for repairs to the stove, refrigerator and air conditioners during our 6 day stay. The shower on the main floor had no water, the shower in the room above the garage had no hot water and broken bathroom lighting. We booked the cleaners every day, and while they did clean up the daily bugs (Costa Rica is buggy) there were bugs and spider webs inside the dish cabinets, and the garbage can was crawling with ants. One of the back glass doors was cracked from side to side so we were afraid of opening it, a curtain rod in the kitchen was falling down, the barbecue is very dirty, we had mismatched sheets and ratty towels, there was a derelict stove in the car port and the laundry room is filthy (clearly intended not to be seen by guests). The positives: The pool was great. We liked the view, the location, the gate staff of Manuel Antonio Estates, and it was always easy to get a cab to the house. We even liked walking the hills to and back to town. Everyone in town seems to know it Villa Jacana, but in it's current state this is more of a home for college students than for families with children or for adults looking for a worry-free vacation. This house may have been loved, but it is time for an overhaul.

Owner's Response: 1. I always advice clients that I’m not on property but I make sure they have my home and cell number along with my email addy; and that I’m only an hour away. I also stay in touch with them during their stay via phone and email. I manage properties within a 1 hour radius and we also have cleaners and caretakers who can be onsite if needed. 2. Whenever any issues are reported to me I make sure they are taken care of ASAP – gas cylinders are delivered within an hour of my being told something is wrong and if ACs break down they are taken care of within 24 hours or less. 3. Showers are always checked to ensure they are all receiving hot water. 4. Light fixture in room above carport is being replaced – the current one has a short in it and it causes the lights to sometimes not come on. 5. Bugs and spider webs: the housekeepers take everything out of the cupboards once a week to give them a thorough cleaning because we are in a country with bugs and spiders; we’ll try to do this more often. 6. The sliding glass door is being replaced this week since a new one had to be ordered and made. 7. Kitchen curtain rod is being replaced with a better hook so it doesn’t easily slip off. 8. BBQ gets cleaned after every use and we’ll make sure it’s done more thoroughly. 9. Beds are always made up with matching sheet sets but sometimes clients ask for additional sheets so they may not match the ones on the bed. 10. New bath towels were purchased on July 14th and more are being purchased this week along with new pool towels. 11. “Stove in the carport is being removed this week. 12. Laundry room has been tidied up – it was a little cluttered since the housekeepers fell behind on laundry because the old washer broke down and we had to get a new one. ________________________________________ Ana J.
