Details about the Black Bear Lodge...

Main level of the home offers a wrap-around porch with plenty of cozy chairs to enjoy the sights and sounds of the valley and mountains around you. Inside, you'll find a fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances and every kitchen tool you'll need for cooking. The kitchen table was custom built to allow diners to view the mountains from the dining table. The Great Room offers a gorgeous natural stone gas fireplace, large flatscreen tv w/DirecTV, Pandora radio, and BluRay player. There are two bedrooms and two bathrooms on this level. The master bedroom offers amazing mountain views, a queen bed with Egyptian cotton linens, a full bathroom with oversized tub/shower, and a generous full closet. Across the hall, another bedroom offers a queen bed with Egyptian cotton linens and mountain views from one side and wooded views from another. A spacious, full bathroom in the hallway serves this bedroom as well as the main living areas.

Downstairs offers a cozy family room/game room (yes, with mountain views!), a third bedroom, another full bath, and a full laundry room. The family room has oversized, outrageously comfortable seating, another large flatscreen tv w/DirecTV, Pandora radio, and BluRay player. Enjoy some cards or games (help yourself to those at the cabin) at the oak table. The downstairs bedroom offers two single beds and more breathtaking mountain views. Immediately outside the bedroom is the third full bathroom. Also located downstairs is a full laundry room equipped with washer, dryer, and ironing board/iron.

The hot tub is located directly outside the lower level french doors, on the lower level patio. Enjoy long leisurely soaks in the hot tub or have a seat in the chairs on the patio and take in the mountain views. A propane Weber grill is also located on this patio. In the side yard, feet from the hot tub and grill, is a custom made firepit for your nighttime adventure and fun. There is plenty of outdoor space (2.5 acres) for throwing a ball around or setting up some corn hole games.

The home has high speed WiFi with excellent connections. There is an iPod docking station available for guests' use.

Much of the wooden furniture was handcrafted by the owner. Inquire if interested in purchasing replicas or requesting custom pieces for your home.

About Jim and Lisa Franceschini

We have been mountain lovers since we married over 25 years ago and are realizing our dream of building and renting mountain cabins in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. We met a gifted and extraordinarily talented builder who has built three cabins for us. The Black Bear Lodge is the 1st of these cabins and we feel truly blessed to call it ours and are excited to be able to share it with others!

Jim and Lisa Franceschini purchased this house in 2013

Why Jim and Lisa Franceschini chose Stanley

This home offers the most amazing views of the mountains and valleys of the Shenandoah...truly 180 degree views of ever-changing mountains and pastures. It provides front row seats to the daily rising of the sun. It is so close to all that the Shenandoah Valley offers, and offers superior construction and attention to detail.

What makes this house unique

This home spoke to us the moment we first saw it. The views are indescribable: the Shenandoah Valley literally spreads out in front of you and the mountains of Shenandoah Nat'l Park surround the valley. We have grown to love the sounds of the cows in the pastures around the home, the smell of storms as they roll through the valley, and the true silence that you can only find in the mountains. The views from the windows and doors inside the home still catch us by surprise and never cease to take our breath away.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Though we only discovered Black Bear Lodge upon scrambling for options after our original choice had already been booked, your cabin will likely be our top choice for future stays in the area.

This was the third cabin we've rented since we started vacationing in Shenandoah, and it was by far the best overall.

For one, we learned that lower elevations can afford far better views than what you get when perched in a cabin on an actual mountain. The sweeping views from Black Bear Lodge were vastly superior to our two previous aeries situated higher up on nearby foothills.

And the lower elevation also meant an easier time quickly accessing the cabin from the road, which is invaluable when there's a whiny toddler in the back seat. In the past, we've had to endure a mile-and-a-half or so of narrow, unpaved roads with hairpin turns and treacherous inclines to get to a cabin, so it was quite a relief to have just a short gravel driveway between the cabin and a finished road.

Finally, we were blown away by your level of organization and incredible attention to detail, which enabled us to immediately acclimate to the cabin as if we'd been staying there for years.

In addition, of course, to the main binder, which yielded answers to every conceivable question, the labels next to the light switches were super helpful, eliminating the constant trial and error characteristic of past cabin stays.

I could continue on in a similar vein about the porch, the furniture, the numerous amenities, etc.--all were fantastic.

Thanks again for offering such a great cabin. We had a wonderful time.

average rating of 4.8653846 based on 54 reviews

This cabin suited all our family's needs for a weekend wedding.

  • 5 of 5

We used this cabin for lodging and as a venue for the rehearsal dinner. The owners were very helpful, especially with venue service for: clearing the lower level, directing parking, working with catering vendors, and then moving the rec room furniture back in place an hour after the dinner ended. The views were gorgeous, especially from the upper deck. The interior is spacious for 6 and with the wrap-around deck & when dining in lower level we accommodated 40 with ease for a dinner. The furnishings, kitchen, baths, bedrooms, & laundry were all more than adequate. We highly recommend this property & would return again. The owners are great!

Wonderful views! Great decor, clean, and loved that all light switches were labeled. No flipping multiple switches to find the right one.

Homeowners were extremely responsive to any question that we asked. Looking forward to coming back in the future.

Amazing Views, Clean and Spacious Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I spent a weekend here in August 2017 and had a fantastic time! It was the perfect amount of space for three couples (6 people total) -- each couple had their own bedroom AND their own bathroom. The house is beautiful and impeccably well kept. We really appreciated how much thought the owners put into everything -- there were helpful instructions posted throughout the cabin. The kitchen was well stocked, and there were plenty of towels and sheets for everyone. However, the bath towels were a little musty, so I would recommend bringing your own. We loved grilling on the patio, making bonfires in the fire pit, and especially enjoyed the hot tub. The views from this cabin are AMAZING. Since the house looks down on a main road, it's not very private, but a few cars driving by weren't too big of a deal. It rained one night, and we were even able to stay outside and play games on the covered porch. There was plenty of space for us to set up a corn hole game in yard. The only thing missing from the patio was a dining table and chairs, but they do provide a folding table and plastic chairs you can set up. We didn't see any wild animals, but one night we did hear something howling (a coyote?) pretty close to the cabin. But we ran inside before we could find out what it was lol. It's in a great location -- we went tubing on the Shenandoah River and it was only about a 35 minute drive. Only about 10 minutes from Luray, which was helpful when we ordered pizza one night. There's even a winery about a mile down the road! Overall, this cabin was the perfect mountain getaway and we're already planning our next stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the wonderful review, Jenna! We're glad you enjoyed the home, the hot tub, the patio and decks, and the mountains. You really packed a lot of fun into your time here and we're happy you got to play for a few days! Thank you for the comment about the towels; we switched detergents a couple weeks ago and as soon as we saw your review we went over the home to check the towels - and you are right, they don't smell fresh. So we re-washed everything; thank you again for letting us know. The lesson here: don't buy laundry detergent just because it's on sale!

Black Bear Lodge was fantastic. The views are amazing and did not disappoint, even on the 4th of July....We were able to see fireworks from several areas in the mountains while sitting on the deck of the was AMAZING!! There are many options of things to do and stores to shop at in close distance to the cabin, very convenient. The cabin itself is spacious, clean and well kept. It was also stocked with everything we needed. I was impressed with how nice everything was, from the dishes, to the bedding, the beds, the furniture, it's clear the cabin is well taken care of. The owners are great to deal with and send you information about the cabin and the area prior to your visit that is very helpful. Thank You for a great family vacation!

There are a million things to do in the Shenandoah Valley area!! Luray Caverns (10 minutes from the home) and Shenandoah National Park/Skyline Drive (15 minutes) are 'must do' items. The Park offers gorgeous drives, overlooks, hiking, biking, and ranger-led activities.

Luray (10 minutes) offers the Hawksbill Greenway (fantastic walking/biking along a rushing creek), plenty of shopping and dining, mini golf, 18 hole golf courses, zip lines, horseback riding, and more. Lake Arrowhead (10 minutes) offers fishing, boating, BBQ facilities, and swimming/relaxing at the beach area. Hawksbill Recreation Area (5 minutes) offers an outdoor pool and BBQ area. Spectacular canoeing/kayaking/tubing along the Shenandoah River (up to Class 2 Rapids) is available on your own or through several area Outfitters. Wineries (closest is two miles from the cabin), antique shopping, shooting ranges, jet skiing, off-roading, outdoor concerts and festivals, and even a zoo are all within half an hour or less. Want to drive a little further? Presidential homes, Civil War sites, and Harrisonburg and Charlottesville are all 30-60 minutes away. Of course, if all you want is to stay at the cabin and relax with good food, a good book, and beautiful scenery, downtown Stanley (2 miles) offers a grocery store and a couple great restaurants.

The Visitor's Center in Luray is an excellent source of additional area information.
