Kapoho House Rental Photos and Description

2 Bedrooms, 2 queens, 1 & 1/2 baths, ocean view throughout and very comfortable

Our house has the pristine natural views like no other rentals with over one mile of tidepool views on three sides, and from the dining room, living room and 1 of the bedrooms. A very private location with no neighbors and no lights in the view when in the house and on the Lanai (there's 1 neighbor but we never saw them more than once in a year)! Experience water on four sides when tides are 3.0 and above. Enjoy sun and moon rises and the refreshing ocean breeze with little or no flying pests. You can leave doors and windows open (with screens closed of course) and not need to turn the ceiling fans on. This is the freshest air in the world and a most pleasant location to enjoy the sea and tide pools. In Dec 2014 we did hurricane repair and remodeling of the house, now it has brand new kitchen cabinets, enlarged living room, and new sliding glass doors with 180 degree ocean view.

You can literally snorkel from the house in the famous Kapoho tidepools that are at your door step. We are located on the edge of the Tidepool Preserve so fishing is allowed to the north and daily locals fish with nets and spears. From our cottage and south, is the Wai O Pae Tide Pool Preserve. offers entertaining vistas both below and above the water.

Location Information: A five minute drive will take you to Ahalnui Beach Park with its amazing 90+ degree geothermally-heated tide-pool. This is a gorgeous place for the whole family. You are only 15 minutes to unique Pahoa town, which is a step back in time. You will find many very good restaurants to choose from and a ''Real Hawaiian'' atmosphere! You will love this place. We will provide a 'Welcome Letter' once you book so you could have very detailed info of the area as of what to do to have the most fun.

Additional Details for the Rental: Lanai: great for dining, cocktail and wine happy hours, reading, or just hanging out there to enjoy the Pacific ocean view, sea breeze, watch your kids playing in the shallow pools downstairs, or maybe whale watching if you are lucky. Broadband Internet: You may either go wireless, or using the cable modem. Remember to bring your own lap top if you have to work some during your stay; otherwise a smart phone is perfect since most major cellular carriers have connections there. Kid Friendly: The tide pools downstairs are kids' snorkeling paradise! they are not just for 'big kids'! One of the best snorkeling areas among all the Hawaiian islands since it's been the marine conservation area since 1960s.

The Unique Benefits at this House: The Pacific Ocean is right in front of the house, between you and the Pacific, there're the tide pools where you and your children can swim and snorkel in your backyard any time during the day, talk with the fish, swim with the turtle, it's heaven. We found this area is the best of Hawaii, unlike most everywhere else with sandy beach and resort one after another, this is the real and original Hawaii.

About Susanna Billings

Since 1984, we've traveled to Hawaii and the Big Island's Puna district since 1988. While we love our home base in California's Central Coast, we both are most comfortable in Hawaii. Susanna was born in China and has traveled the world for work and play. Her passion is food and wine and her kitchens reflect her tastes. John began his business in San Luis Obispo in 1973 and still shops the world for home furnishings for indoors and out. That business, Daylight Home Lighting & Patio, is widely known for quality and selection second to none. John has designed 3 homes and all reflect function and comfort with a classic sense of style.

Susanna is the manager and booking contact for Kapoho Makai. She is always connected and responds to questions, concerns and issues no matter what time zone or continent she is in. We love travel, love meeting people, entertaining friends, Hawaii the Big Island is one of our favorite destinations in the world. We love rural Hawaii, that's why we purchased our home here and turned it into a wonderful vacation rental, so more people could enjoy the nice and unique setting of the house. Having vacation here is a total adventurous experience, away from the the white sandy beach resorts.

Susanna Billings purchased this house in 2005

Why Susanna Billings chose Puna District

We found this area is the best of the original Hawaii, where you don't see the traffic, tourists crowds etc, where you could have your own privacy and peace.

What makes this house unique

The Pacific ocean is right in front of the house, between you and the Pacific, it's the tide pools where you and your children can swim and snorkel any time during the day, talk with the fish, swim with the turtle, it's heaven.

Guestbook comments from the owner

stay here at the big island and all I can say is mahalo!

We enjoyed swimming in the tide pools, gazing at the starts and reading and watching the ocean.

It felt like our own private island.

Thank you for sharing your home with us, we will never forget this place.

Aloha.

Amazing location, breathtaking view, incredible snorkeling!!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Kapoho Makai was amazing! From the Hawaiian decor, to the view from inside and on the lanai, the house was exactly what we were hoping for! How can you beat waking up to the ocean lapping right outside your bedroom window. We had never snorkeled before and we had a fantastic time in the pools directly in front of the house. Twice we had the pleasure of observing honu. One swam by within a foot of us!! We also greatly enjoyed the surrounding Puna district and Pahoa! We wouldn't hesitate to stay at Kapoho Makai again.

Cute, quaint place - but man, whatta location

  • 4 of 5

The location in the tidal pools is amazing. We watched the moon rise over a black sea at night, and snorkled to our heart-content. Lots of fish in the pools closer to shore, lots of coral as you go out, really easy to snorkle in for beginners (just be sure to wear tough-soled water shoes for the rocks).

Read the other reviews about the tides and time your arrival and departure (if you can!). We had to make multiple trips in our wading/hiking sandals w/our luggage on our heads. We didn't mind - it was worth the experience.

The house itself is very Hawaiian cute, a little funky layout - but it had everything we needed in the kitchen and bath. It's not perfect - we were just one couple, so we got to choose the bedroom away from the septic smell. The manager/owner also need to update the batteries in the fans and an umbrella on the deck would be great, but again, all fine considering the amazing location and experience you can have living on the edge of the world for a few days.

Excellent house on the Kapoho Tide Pools!

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay for 2-4 people in Puna District. Newly remodeled and right over the tide pools and a great view of the pools and the ocean. Lovely large deck or lanai with a big table, chairs for 4 and a sitting area with two comfy chairs and two side tables. There is a barbeque so you can cook and eat on the lanai, all while watching the tides come and go.

The house is well stocked with soaps, paper products and condiments for cooking. This is so welcomed, as some vacation rentals give you very little supplies. The House is very charming with its very tasteful Hawaiian decor.

Susanna was very responsive and wants to be sure that you enjoy your stay.

We will definitely stay here again!

Perfect Location for "Old Hawaii"

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here in July 2016. The location is simply perfect! The sound of the ocean, the tide pools, the sunrises, and the near constant breeze made for ideal conditions. The recommendations for eating in Pahoa and surrounding areas were accurate - outstanding food where the locals dine! From here, we saw most of the Big Island - beautiful and scenic drives to South Point, Kalapana, Hilo, Volcano Nat'l Park, and others.

Accommodations were excellent with plenty of room for 2, but can comfortably sleep 4. The views were amazing and the tide pools offered a glimpse into another world. Everything was as described and everything we needed was there, ready to go. We highly recommend this home and location for your next stay!

Breathtaking Oasis

  • 5 of 5

This particular property in Kapoho makai is just spectacularly situated to take advantage of all the surrounding beauty. The sunrise is spectacular right in front of the house overlooking tide pools and ocean, with a panoramic view that will surely mesmerize. The immediate proximity of the tide pools, and the safe picturesque snorkeling within was a highlight to our stay. Our children could literally venture out and explore at any time of the day or night, experiencing the abundant marine life and habitat whether high or low tide. The house is a small yet quaint beach cottage that was a perfect fit for our desire for a low keyed no constraint family vacation. The Billingʻs and their caretaker were extremely helpful and informative, especially in the face of Tropical Storm Darby threatening the coastline. The accommodations arenʻt the fanciest, but everything that you need to enjoy the paradise of the Waiʻopae tide pools is here. If youʻre looking for a hotel like stay, go to Kona. If youʻre looking for a place to take in the beauty of the eastern shoreline of Hawaiʻi island and forget about time and worries, thereʻs no better place than here. Our family is already looking forward to returning to this treasure literally on the edge of paradise.
