Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 2 queens, 2 baths, ocean view throughout and very comfortable

Our house has the pristine natural views like no other rentals with over one mile of tidepool views on three sides, and from the dining room, living room and 1 of the bedrooms. A very private location with no neighbors and no lights in the view when in the house and on the Lanai (the next door house is behind ours so people don't see each other when on the lanai). Experience water on four sides when tides are 3.0 and above. Enjoy sun and moon rises and the refreshing ocean breeze with little or no flying pests. You can leave doors and windows open (with screens closed of course) and not need to turn the ceiling fans on. This is the freshest air in the world and a most pleasant location to enjoy the sea and tide pools. In Dec 2014 we did hurricane repair and remodeling of the house, now it has brand new kitchen cabinets, enlarged living room, and new sliding glass doors with 180 degree ocean view.

You can literally snorkel from the house in the famous Kapoho tidepools that are at your door step. We are located on the edge of the Tidepool Preserve so fishing is allowed to the north and daily locals fish with nets and spears. From our cottage and south, is the Wai O Pae Tide Pool Preserve. offers entertaining vistas both below and above the water.

Location Information: A five minute drive will take you to Ahalnui Beach Park with its amazing 90+ degree geothermally-heated tide-pool. This is a gorgeous place for the whole family. You are only 15 minutes to unique Pahoa town, which is a step back in time. You will find many very good restaurants to choose from and a ''Real Hawaiian'' atmosphere! You will love this place. We will provide a 'Welcome Letter' once you book so you could have very detailed info of the area as of what to do to have the most fun.

Additional Details for the Rental: Lanai: great for dining, cocktail and wine happy hours, reading, or just hanging out there to enjoy the Pacific ocean view, sea breeze, watch your kids playing in the shallow pools downstairs, or maybe whale watching if you are lucky. Broadband Internet: You may either go wireless, or using the cable modem. Remember to bring your own lap top if you have to work some during your stay; otherwise a smart phone is perfect since most major cellular carriers have connections there. Kid Friendly: The tide pools downstairs are kids' snorkeling paradise! they are not just for 'big kids'! One of the best snorkeling areas among all the Hawaiian islands since it's been the marine conservation area since 1960s.

The Unique Benefits at this House: The Pacific Ocean is right in front of the house, between you and the Pacific, there're the tide pools where you and your children can swim and snorkel in your backyard any time during the day, talk with the fish, swim with the turtle, it's heaven. We found this area is the best of Hawaii, unlike most everywhere else with sandy beach and resort one after another, this is the real and original Hawaii. As of March 2017 the road in front of our house is repaired and there're no worries to drive directly to the house to park downstairs of the house.

About Susanna Billings

Since 1984, we've traveled to Hawaii and the Big Island's Puna district since 1988. While we love our home base in California's Central Coast, we both are most comfortable in Hawaii. Susanna was born in China and has traveled the world for work and play. Her passion is food and wine and her kitchens reflect her tastes. John began his business in San Luis Obispo in 1973 and still shops the world for home furnishings for indoors and out. That business, Daylight Home Lighting & Patio, is widely known for quality and selection second to none. John has designed 3 homes and all reflect function and comfort with a classic sense of style.

Susanna is the manager and booking contact for Kapoho Makai. She is always connected and responds to questions, concerns and issues no matter what time zone or continent she is in. We love travel, love meeting people, entertaining friends, Hawaii the Big Island is one of our favorite destinations in the world. We love rural Hawaii, that's why we purchased our home here and turned it into a wonderful vacation rental, so more people could enjoy the nice and unique setting of the house. Having vacation here is a total adventurous experience, away from the the white sandy beach resorts.

Susanna Billings purchased this house in 2005

Why Susanna Billings chose Kapoho

We found this area is the best of the original Hawaii, where you don't see the traffic, tourists crowds etc, where you could have your own privacy and peace.

What makes this house unique

The Pacific ocean is right in front of the house, between you and the Pacific, it's the tide pools where you and your children can swim and snorkel any time during the day, talk with the fish, swim with the turtle, it's heaven.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you so much for sharing this wonder house with us, we have nothing but just great things to say. We woke every morning for the sunrise and listened to the Pacific golden plovers great and a bathe to the start the day. We had a lot of rain but it didn't stop us or take away from the beauty of this place or the island. The Black Sand Beach which is a few minute walk from the house was awesome, it was very busy on Sunday with a drum circle, we went again on a Tuesday morning and it was much more quiet and peaceful. We went to the Volcano National Park , what an amazing experience! We were lucky to see active lava flow (Mahalo Pele!). I would recommend the Kilauea Iki Trail Hike (4 miles round trip), it was other world. I would also recommend driving to the end of chain of craters road to the coast (where we were also able to see lava entering the ocean - where the steam is from). All the food recommendations from Susanna and John were wonderful. We also appreciate the kitchen supplies and cooking our own food. Of course spent as much time in the tide pools downstairs as you can!

I wish we could stay longer and I hope we can come back.

Thank you so much!

It’s an Ocean Kinda Day

  • 5 of 5

We’ve stayed in the area numerous times but had the opportunity to stay RIGHT ON THE WATER this go around. Let me just say it was best decision ever!! House was perfect, literally had everything we needed/wanted. Plenty of stuff to cook for ourselves, board games for family fun, and the view was phenomenal. If you’re on the fence about staying just take the plunge and RENT THIS HOUSE!

Great location

  • 5 of 5

The house was in a great spot for snorkeling and close to the lava viewing area. The coral just beyond the shallow tide pools in front of the house was gorgeous. High tide surrounding the house was quite an experience for us high desert dwellers!

Great house!

  • 5 of 5

The House is fabulous! We went tide-pooling every day and saw fish, coral, an eel and spaghetti worms. I love that the kitchen had everything that we needed, and the sunrise from the lanai was to die for. If you're there on a Sunday morning, check out the farmer's market.

We loved it

  • 4 of 5

The house was neat and clean and just what we'd hoped for. The snorkeling was fantastic at high tide and exploring the pools at low tide was fun too. Lot's of things to do without having to go too far. I would recommend to anyone looking for a nice relaxing time.

Peaceful rt on snorkeling ponds

  • 4 of 5

2nd year here for us. Honestly could use a touchup paint job here and there. Within the first hour, we killed 3 cock roaches the size of half dollars. Coming from behind the fridge. BUT, with that out of the way, the tradewinds lulled us to sleep every night and we snorkeled in the ponds 3 doors down every single day. Loved it. We were here for our sons wedding and they all came over lto snorkel. Our 40 you daughter had never snorkeled and she was in tears as we took her to the airport next to the last night we lease. Some towels were a bit musty but when you are on the very edge of the Pacific Ocean and noone to be there 24-7, no prob. The locks could use some oil as does the support mech behind the tv that holds it to the wall. And the fire extingurisher altho it reads in the green. So relaxing and peaceful. Could use a shot of drano in the older tub, but cant expect even all that we enjoyed with so many folks in and out all the time. Plenty of snorkel gear, books on salt water fish, good tv and WIFI reception, all the kitchen equipt you'd evern want. Caretaker was kind of grumpy but we didn't get in but about 5 hours late. Thanks to you for a wonderful experience. Our daughter, who works in the govy, said. "Dad and Mom, I can't find the words to describe the gift of taking me on this vacation with you!" Nothing else to say. It's great.

Love the location

This house was amazing, love the location. Eat breakfast watching the waves break over the tide pools. Great snorkeling in the tide pools at high tide and in the lagoon. Remote location so be prepared for rest and relaxation, not busyness.
