Susan and I found this beautiful island by accident. Our first visit was in 2003, and we never wanted to travel anywhere else. The beaches, snorkeling and hiking were far above our expectations. We are from New England and felt we found our Caribbean paradise. We traveled many times to St John always dreaming someday we could have our own place. I am general contracter, and when we heard about a small Fixer upper we fell in love. We both worked for months renovating the home ourselves with alot of ups and downs. We decided to name our home Daebreak after Susans mom who recently passed away, her nickname was Dae.Now complete, we are so happy we can now share our home so others can enjoy this beautiful island. It truley is a dream come true!!
David Michael purchased this villa in 2010
We love the local side of St John. Everyone is so welcoming in Coral Bay and we feel at home there. The home has a private feel, but so close to town and the beaches. Not to mention we have our own personal ruins in our back yard!!
What we love most about the house is the mornings, and the beautiful sunrise we wake up to everyday over Coral Bay.What a great way to start your day! The deck right off the bedroom provides privacy, and tranquilityTrue relaxation..I like the fact both North Shore and South shore beaches are only 10 min away. Also, In my opinion some of the best restaurants in St John are in Coral Bay only minutes away.
This was a wonderful home, even better than the pictures. The kitchen and whole house was well stocked and prepared. We enjoyed the chairs and beach towels. The view from the bedroom and comfy bed made it hard to get going in the mornings. Thankfully, we didn't hear chickens in the mornings.
As mentioned, the road to the house is a bit of an adventure but with a jeep it was fun. Very close to restaurants and grocery stores. Best of all only a few minutes from amazing snorkeling.
Thanks for making our trip so easy and comfortable!
Our family really enjoyed staying in this private house at the end, end, end of the road! Everything was clean and maintained well.
I've stayed in places on St. John that had a more commanding view because they were higher up the mountain, but this spot is tranquil and still offered a picturesque place to relax with a cup of coffee in the morning on the second-floor deck. That deck is also a nice place to do some stargazing while listening to frogs and other night creatures. There are ruins right in your backyard, if you're willing to climb a bit, but they are totally worth the effort.
This house provided plenty of room for a family of four -- we had the parents upstairs, one kid on the futon in the den and another on the pull-out couch. Having two bathrooms was nice, although note there's only one really useful shower. The outdoor shower provides very little privacy; more appropriate for a romantic getaway than a family vacation! :) The outdoor shower is very handy for just rinsing off after a day of hiking or at the beach if you were to do so while still in a swimsuit.
Very nice kitchen amenities and an outdoor grill helped for some less-expensive meals cooked at home for a couple of nights. Despite very warm and humid weather, we never felt like we needed air conditioning thanks to the ceiling fans and comfortable breezes coming in the open doors and windows. Be prepared for visiting donkeys and, of course, the ever-present roosters make for some early mornings on the island. But then, you might as well get going early anyway since there is so much to do on St. John.
The location was nice and secluded without being too far away from Coral Bay so you have relatively easy access to "town." Once you're stocked up on supplies, the owners provide plenty of coolers, beach towels and other things to help you enjoy your day at the beach or out hiking.
While it's nice to be disconnected, we also appreciated the WiFi that was provided so we could upload and back up the many photos we were taking. All-in-all, a great place to call home for awhile. If we returned as a family again, this would be a place we would check on for availability.
Arriving at Daebreak after missing the 6 pm ferry from St. Thomas...due to cab service from St. Thomas Airport...put us in a difficult situation driving to Daebreak...Clark and/Courtesy Car Rental were very accomodating helping us to find our way,,,that being said,... the drive from Cruz Bay to Coral Bay was an adventure and a challenge in the dark so we arrived...listening to 1000's frogs put us right to sleep... roosters crowing in the morning.. donkey's braying. Driving in daylight tended to put things into perspective......Sunrise was spiritual...beauitiful...views incredible (right from the MBR)...favorite places...snorkeling..rent at Crabby's (Coral Bay)
...Waterlemon Cay, Haul Over, Maho Bay...scratch Trunk Bay too touristry...hikes,,,Peace Hill...Lemonwater...places to eat Skinny Legs, Coral Bay, great food and friendly folks, great burgers..., Chateau Bordeaux good, but pricey for dinner try lunch or breakfast, million dollar view, TuTu Much shop next door has beautiful silver and coral jewelry...,incredible vacation, rent a jeep, explore and have FUN!!! We would go back tomorrow! Daebreak is at the end of the road...a challenge to get there..but incredibly beautiiful...a truly special vacation...Coral Bay peaceful compared to the hub bub of Cruz Bay... Probably the most unigue vacation we have taken hands town......We loved it...it was spectacular! I miss it...already...
We stayed at Daebreak for a week and absolutely loved it. The house was more than enough for 2 people, everything was very clean and updated We loved the open concept. Waking up to the sunrise every morning was really nice and having leisurely mornings and breakfast at home was such a treat.
The house is located at the end of a road and very private. The ruins behind the house were much more extensive than anticipated and we felt like we were stepping into a different world when we went to explore them. Coral Bay is only a 5min drive away and we loved exploring the east end beaches, hiking and swimming, snorkeling and relaxing.
We much appreciated the guides that were available at the house, as well as the beach chairs.
We will definitely come back! Thank you very much.

Our four night stay at Daebreak was truly amazing. First, Clark and Catherine were really accommodating from the moment we contacted them - they answered our many questions and once we landed in St Thomas, gave us detailed directions on how to get to the house. Clark met us at the house and showed us around to make sure we felt comfortable. Second, the house is gorgeous! The attention to detail in every room is astounding and clearly a lot of love and time has gone into making this an a beautiful property. For us, the bedroom was where we spent most of our time - the exposed wooden ceilings, the skylight, the picture window and the balcony were perfect! We spent four lovely nights there lulled to sleep by the atmospheric and refreshing breeze that blew in threw the windows and door every night. The kitchen is VERY well equipped and we never had to worry about things like salt or olive oil. The finishings on the stove, cabinets etc are to a very high standard and you feel right at home using all the appliances. They really have thought of everything. Clark told us that we should take the garbage out with us everyday and he was right - ants come by the dozens...Overall, the house is super clean, well maintained and beautiful. There are tons of guide books and maps which were indispensable to us! Third, the road to the house...yes, you do need a four wheel drive - its quite bumpy and can be rough in spots, especially if it rains but it is beautiful and the neighbors are friendly and helpful if you need anything. Finally, Daebreak was a little out of our budget but for anyone considering splurging a bit, go for it! It was worth every extra penny we spent over our budget. And we made up for it by eating at home. If you do decide to eat out, check out Aquabistro or Tourist Trap - both were excellent. Coral Bay is the best place to be on the island and we avoided Cruz Bay as much as possible.
St John is amazing in general - we highly recommend the walk around Anneburg and Salt Pond Bay - and we cannot wait to come back. We will definitely plan our visit around when Daebreak is available and highly recommend it to anyone considering a stay on this island.
My husband and I had a great time during our stay at Dae Break. The 2nd floor bedroom was roomy, comfortable and clean. In the morning we enjoyed having our coffee and breakfast on the back deck. It is shaded by a beautiful tree and is very peaceful and relaxing. The house was equipped with all necessities for cooking. Being supplied with good beach chairs was a major plus for me.The showers also had great water pressure. The only downside was climbing the dirt road to the house although I did get used to it. A four wheel drive is a must. The cable service was sufficient,TV's were a little too small, although we did not watch much TV We do plan to return in 2014. The owners did a nice job renovating without taking away from the cottage's character.
the ruins of the Carolina House is only 50 yards away, and is accessible thru a cleared path on the side of the house
