Relaxing private vacation for a couple, a small family, or good friends...Or, Blue Ridge Trail Riding Vacation with your own horses! Living quarters are on one level that has only one step onto the deck (handicapped friendly, with a little help). Located on 16 mountain acres, Rolllin' N the Hay is the perfect equestrian set up: 4 riders enjoy the cypress sided two bedrooms and 4 horses enjoy the four box stalls below. Leatherwood Mountain Resort boasts 75+ miles of mountain horse trails that traverse directly through this 16 acre property. A captivating vacation: relaxing long soaks in the hot tub after a long trail ride, unobstructed mountain views from the raised deck chairs, brilliant star lit nights from the open deck (no light pollution here!); cherished moments await in the peace and solitude of this secluded mountain barn.
But don't let the horse facilities deter non-horsemen! Rollin' N the Hay is also a wonderful place for couples, small families, honeymooner's, anniversaries, or friends to get away from 'IT ALL'! Private, beautiful views, nature right outside the door, in the middle of wilderness, hiking trails, pool, tennis, fishing, and tubing are for everyone to enjoy.
Rollin N the Hay is located just off Tin Horn Road (1.8 miles from the Leatherwood Mountains security gate) and about 1/4 mile down graveled Flag Branch Road; while trailer parking is ample, the steep grade and tight turning requires a 'he-man' truck (not a wimpy truck or long rig)! Nightly board is $20 per horse, bring required shavings, hay and feed; a current health certificate from out of state horses and negative coggins for all horses is required to be shown at the Leatherwood Stables Office (closes at 5PM) in the Saddlebrook Restaurant Building at the entrance to Leatherwood. Rollin' N the Hay welcomes your other furry family members as well (pets up to 35 pounds) for a per pet fee of $50.
Rollin' N the Hay feels like stepping into an 'old shoe'. Warm cypress wood, stained glass panels, Frederick Remington cowboy prints, nature collections, your horses just below, and of course modern 'must haves' WiFi and digital television; who could ask for more to get away from the hustle and bustle of the 'real world'? Ask about partnering Rollin' N the Hay with the owner's close by log cabin, Hemlock Point and its two stall barn, to create a unique Equestrian compound for large groups of up to 10-12 guests and 6-8 horses (10% off rental rate for both homes on the same contract).

Love the quote by an unknown author: 'The Human Spirit needs places where nature has not been rearranged by the hand of man.' Scott and Mary Helen Ellis; we love the rural life! Our passions range from the oldest town in NC on the Pamlico River to the northern NC Blue Ridge Mountains. We love all things nature: woods, wildlife, Celtic music, boating, hiking, horseback riding, crafting, gardening...and all things old: antiques, genealogy, NC's oldest town, and old legends. Give us the views across rivers, oceans and mountains to the most sophisticated views across the grand cities of the world. We wonder at the remarkable beauty and elegance in a bevy of butterflies sunning on a rock in a bold mountain stream...as opposed to the brush strokes of someone hanging on a wall, lit by a bulb, in a stuffy building...Our fervent belief is that nothing mankind can do is ever on par with what our Creator did!
Mary Helen Ellis purchased this cabin in 2007
Every year of our 30+ years of marriage, we have ventured to the NC mountains. In 1997 we made the leap of faith to purchase our property at Leatherwood Mountains Resort, appreciating the concept of stewardship in creating a human presence but maintaining the wilderness for all generations.
Our Concept: seclusion, just you and your family/friends, your horses, the beautiful wilderness all around, the long range views of the glorious mountains, peace...
Everything about the house/cabin was perfect. We will be back- and next time we are going to stay at Rollin in the Hay again- it was perfect! Thanks for a wonderful vacation!!!
This was a great property! Mountain views with sunrise..check, hot tub..check, privacy..check, horseback riding, fishing, and hiking..all check! The beds were comfortable, the house and mountains were so peaceful and for us, the weather was perfect. This home had everything that my boyfriend and I were looking for, it was a great vacation and my dog loved it too! The only negative I had was that when we arrived there must have been a newly hatched lady bug nest because they were everywhere, dead and alive. No big deal though, I swept up and that was that. The rental property staff were also amazing. We went down to the visitor center to reserve horseback riding and they were so friendly and helpful. Later that evening, we stopped at the visitor center bar and it was like everyone there new each other and we felt very welcome. I would definitely recommend Rollin' N the Hay, and I will stay here again!
Great location, cozy and very well taken care of premises, very attentive and helpful owners, excellent hiking close by; highly recommended!
I wish I had known about this place when I still had my horses. Having the stables below is so cool. They were so clean that I would not mind staying in them. The quiet and peacefulness was awesome. It felt as though the mountains were created just for us that weekend. Comfortable and cozy with great views. I look forward to returning this winter and spring as to view this setting through the seasons.
We were in a pinch to try and find a last minute excursion when we came across this listing. The Ellis' were quick to respond and we were very pleased when we arrived.
The living area upstairs was open with lots of windows overlooking the mountains and stocked with just about anything you'd need/have at home.
We were lucky enough to have two cloudless, moonless, no humidity nights that made for spectacular star gazing in the hot tub.
There aren't any grocery stores near by so fill your cooler prior to leaving or plan on stopping along the way.
Large flat screen TV's in the main area and bedroom with Satellite and DVD player but we never turned them on.
Seemingly spacious accommodations for the horses (though we didn't have any) and opportunities to book 1& 2 hour rides with the Leatherwood stables.
Beautiful Blowing Rock not far with shopping and and hiking.
An extremely relaxing getaway for us.
Property was nice and clean. Paddock was good size as well as the stalls. Great views and a relaxing hot tub to enjoy after a long day of riding in the Leatherwood Mountains. Right near the heart of the trail system which is great you can hit almost all of them from the cabin. Can have up to 4 horses at this cabin. Also pet friendly which we may use on our next stay! Very nice people to work with and very helpful. Thank you for a wonderful place to stay and enjoyed every minute of it!
Rollin' N the Hay and Hemlock Point cabin are within walking distance (but not within sight) of each other. We are offering 10% off of both Rollin N the Hay and Hemlock Point if rented together on the same contract. This includes: 2 homes, 5 bedrooms, 6 stalls, 2 pastures for up to 10 people. What a DEAL! Ask about other deals that we may offer from time to time.

If you are bringing horses, there is an extra liability form for all riders to be completed. Due to truck and trailer navigation on the drive around the barn, only a 2 horse trailer is allowed. There is Leatherwood Mountains horse trailer parking near the stables at the base of the mountain (within 2 miles of Rollin' N the Hay cabin/barn). Call with instructions for longer horse trailers.
