Excellent Home and Hospitality
Excellent home with awesome setting on the river! We stayed for a week with two teenage daughter-everyone had a great time. Hospitality was great and the home is very well equipped. We wanted a place away from crowds with great fishing and we found both! Great rainbows in the river and many fish were caught during the week. Darby is a neat town and has everything you need. Painted Rocks Lake is just down the road and many hiking trails nearby. First time to Montana and we will be back! I recommend this to families looking for a great house, great views, and awesome fishing!
The Whimsical Cottage was also Magical and Perfect
I just had one of the most amazing weeks ever. I arrived at the Whimsical Cottage to find it spotless, crisp and inspiring. It also was different than a lot of vacation rentals in that it was not homogenized but truly felt like a home that real people with interests, passions, and character lived in. What may not be evident in the current images are all the wonderful details that make up the interior--native-American works, staffs, and imagery, ornate lighting, etc. And outside was equally amazing--just steps from one of the most beautiful rivers and mountain vistas, and secluded and very private--surrounded by trees and water. In the evening, after a day of deep hiking in the Bitterroots, I would dip my aching feet in the cool water and watch the full moon come up through the pines and over the mountain tops--it was epic. And sleeping was exquisitely comfortable--even with 90 degree days, the nights were still very cool and blanket weather--perfect for sleeping in the king in the front room--I never had to turn on an air conditioner once--even during this hottest time of the year. From that perch in the front room I would spot a family of deer eat from the front and side yards at both dusk and dawn--literally just a few yards from the window. It was also wonderful from the same perch to see pontoon boats of fly-fishermen on the river float by as if on hovercraft through the trees. Each day of my stay I would take on a different trail--I did 7 in all--each one an epic journey of beauty and majesty and never a trailhead more than minutes from the cottage. My hike to Upper Bear Lake included a 20 minute experience sharing the lake with a large bull moose--just the two of us, miles from anyone. Cyntia (aka Medicine Woman) was such a gracious host--whenever I had a question I would shoot a text and in minutes was always a thoughtful reply. She simply has the best energy--a real light of a spirit. And so considerate--at one point her husband "Doc" was going to be putting boats in on the property for his own 5 day fly-fishing adventure on the river and they called 24 hours ahead to make sure that would be ok. Occasionally Cyntia would thoughtfully text me when a local music event or gathering was going to happen that wasn't publicized in case I wanted to get an authentic taste of local people or culture. It was hard for me to leave this place of paradise. I will be back for sure. I can't imagine being in the Bitterroots and not staying there!
My wife and I (and the dog!) had a lovely week here, great location for anyone interested in fishing, hiking, floating, and just being outdoors and relaxing in the summertime. It was a rustic place in the country and a bit unkept here and there, but the cottage more than met our needs. Comfortable bedding, good kitchen, great outdoor space. Was nice to have cable access to watch movies at night. Internet was spotty, but that was okay given that we were looking to mostly disconnect, anyway. We had no issues come up, the owner was very accommodating and worked to make sure we were all set up. We loved our stay and would come back.
The property has a lot of character. It is cheerful.
We had a great time at the house and surrounding area. There is so much to do.
The kitchen had everything you needed, we cooked most of our meals at the cabin. The bedroom design is different. The owner was careful to make sure it would work for us. We had 2 families of 3, it worked well. Love the big deck outside. Nice place to wrap up the day. The stars at night are amazing. We enjoyed our stay.
Was nice place to stay.
Was a nice place to spend a week on the river. Water was high for that time of the year but still caught some nice cutthroats.
Unusual amount of rain in 2018 Spring . These Fly Fishermen who waded only were very grateful to have our cottage on the river . They made our place feel very special because they have stayed at other places that were not as quaint as the Whimsical Cottage on the River.
Thank you !
Exactly what we were expecting.
We had a great stay while in Montana. Our little cottage was equipped and cozy. No issues with anything. Lots of wildlife right on the property and plenty of beautiful country to see while you drive or hike to the cottage. Very relaxing atmosphere. I would stay there again without question.
There are numerous lakes, hot springs, other fly fishing areas, river rafting, fly fishing, majestic views on hikes.
