This exquisite Asian jewel is set in beautiful, peaceful, private gardens with a large pond. Gorgeous custom-made furniture, Bose surround-sound, spa-like glass block shower. Quiet, clean, radiant heat under bamboo floor warms the soul and feet. A truly inspiring space with tons of architectural details. Quarter of a mile walk over sand dunes (50 yards away) offers unique access to shoreline of Ten Mile beach and river in the Fort Bragg sunbelt. Because this section of beach is only by private access, it's relatively deserted. Many guests choose to come for a solo retreat. There's a deck and props for yoga, a firepit with wood provided, and a barbeque with charcoal provided. 40 bird species within a one mile radius of the cottage.
Come, relax, unwind, decompress from the city and reenergize your spirit!
Sleep in comfortable queen Flo-Bed (latex) with the surf as a lullaby and birds as your alarm. Four state parks nearby for kayaking, canoeing, hiking etc. Fort Bragg and Mendocino shops and restaurants 10 to 20 minutes respectively. Lost Coast 30 min. north of Westport.
Sorry, no pets.

I'm a 34 year resident of Fort Bragg- all that time practicing as a psychotherapist but now retired. My other occupation is tending my Japanese garden! I love walking on the virtually deserted dunes and stretch of Ten Mile beach. All my guests comment on the serene, peaceful feeling of the property and the attention to detail. I live in the main house on the property.
Lindsay purchased this cottage in 2000
I custom built the cottage originally for friends to enjoy when visiting.
Peace, quiet, beautiful natural surroundings and easy access to a little used stretch of the beach. 40 bird species within a one mile radius of cottage.
This place is perfection - beautiful, impeccably clean, gorgeous garden, quiet, spacious, stunning design features, all the practical needs available; we can't wait to go back again. Lindsay is so welcoming and considerate - if you want a quiet peaceful getaway at the coast, this is for you.
One of a kind cottage, exactly as described and pictured. I am so impressed that Lindsay created this incredibly unique space in a fairly remote coastal community! My husband enjoyed the fire pit and gardens. I loved the glass brick shower and in floor heating. The kitchen is adequate for light cooking. Artfully decorated and very comfortable. My husband went alone through the dunes to the ocean and had a difficult time finding the entry to the forest path on his way back. The only downside for me was that as we were preparing to leave (90 minutes before checkout time), the gardeners began trimming the 10 foot wall of shrubbery 2 feet away from the cottage wall with shrieking, gas-powered tools. Lindsay had asked my husband if this would be ok, and he said yes, presuming that they would be using small clippers and in zen manner meditatively removing one leaf at a time. This sensory assault turned our leisurely farewell into an extremely unpleasant escape and upset my sensitive nervous system for the next few hours. The lesson I learned is that I need to advocate more for myself and not rely on others to do so. I should have asked the gardeners to stop and wait 10 minutes until we had left. In the future, it would be nice if the gardeners are not scheduled to come on the morning when guests are there.
Lindsay's cabin - though adjacent to her own home - is a world away from it all. The property is beautiful and the cabin itself is spacious (enough for my wife and myself), welcoming and peaceful. Lindsay was considerate, her directions and recommendations accurate and she provided all the comforts of home. The short (but challenging, depending on your physical capabilities) hike to the ocean puts this location head and shoulders above others. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Celebrating our 20th anniversary was made very special at the Zen Jewel. It was difficult to leave the beauty and tranquility of the gardens and cottage. It is truly something to experience and enjoy. We chose Zen Jewel to be close to the ocean and experience the coast but we got so much more. The architecture and design of the building is so amazing. Then inside there is everything you will need to rest, relax and enjoy time away from everything. The world seems to melt away and the garden is one to experience and absorb into your soul. We left the windows open at night to hear the ocean waves. It was truly hard for us to leave to go to the ocean. Thank you Lindsay for sharing your amazing sanctuary with us~ It was just what we needed to build wonderful memories and rejuvenate us.
Far from the noise and light pollution of the city, nestled near the end of a country lane just north of Fort Bragg stands the Tranquil Zen Jewel Sanctuary. A place where the background sound comes from the ocean washing ashore just over a quarter mile away. The sounds of mocking birds and the occasional woodpecker came to the fore as we stood on the deck breathing in the fresh air. A sense of Japan greeted us as we entered our cabin. Framed by windows to the west, we had a soothing view of Japanese gardens and a lake. Removing our shoes as we entered, we felt the cool smoothness of the wooden floors and the brief coarseness of the oriental area rugs on our feet. Ahh, the shower! You only die for chocolate but the rain forest shower head comes very close! It was such a relaxing time that the hardest part was leaving knowing that the hubbub and tempo of city life awaited us at the end of our journey home. Fear not though, we shall return.
My husband and I, both in our late seventies, recently spent four nights at the Zen Jewel, a Japanese style guest house in Ft. Bragg, CA. The guest house was beautifully constructed inside and out and was very pleasantly and comfortably furnished. We really enjoyed the lovely Japanese items and touches that were present inside. Our bed was excellent - so comfortable. We loved the large walk in shower with a non slip wooden slat type floor. We were able to balance our time relaxing at the house and taking a few interesting outings in the Ft. Bragg and Mendocino areas. We prepared most of our meals at the guest house, but ate out a couple of dinners and one breakfast. We went to the Mendocino Arts Center and thoroughly enjoyed the exhibits, the gift store and the gardens outside the Arts Center. We spent some time at the Galley Bookstore which has quite a collection of books and a very good greeting card section. Lindsay, the owner of the Zen Jewel, is a lovely person and was there to greet us and help us settle in. She lives on the property in a larger Japanese style home. She is more than happy to try to make your stay as pleasant and peaceable as possible, but at the same time she allows you all the privacy you want. The Japanese style gardens and the walk to and around the large pond were very lovely. We are so pleased we chose to celebrate our anniversary and my birthday at the beautiful and peaceful Zen Jewel Guest House and hope to return again.
Swimming in natural pond on property is possible. An outdoor firepit with chaise lounges is available.
