In the redwoods, above the wide, lazy curve of water, with the tree-lined ridges fading to the west, our vacation home offers a tranquil and private setting for relaxation and that 'getaway feeling.' The north and west walls are almost entirely glass, which creates a light and open atmosphere, giving you a sense of freedom and flight as you gaze at the the osprey, gull, and heron. Through every moment of your day, you’re surrounded by this expansive view of the river and mountains that few other places have. And, when looking is not enough, step down the stairs to your private dock to use the four single kayaks, or row boat to enjoy the wild, scenic lower river, from Duncans Mills to the ocean.
The home is located about a 3/4 mile from Duncans Mills, a quaint little town with coffee shops, restaurants, and shopping for art and collectables. The ocean, and all the great Sonoma Coast Beaches are about seven miles west. On hot summer days, when the rest of California is 100 degrees or more, the soothing ocean breeze cools our place into the 70-80's.
The two-story home is nested on the side of a hill overlooking the river. The 2nd. floor is 950 sq. ft. with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, living room and kitchen. One bedroom has a queen bed and a beautiful view of the river and mountain, and has its own 8’X16’ deck with bistro table and chairs. The view is like being on the bow of a ship at sea. The second bedroom has a bunk bed for the kids and also has double doors leading to its sunny morning deck. The bathroom has a Kohler corner shower with curved glass enclosure and a sink from France. The living/dining room is open an airy with large picture windows and doors to the deck. The remodeled kitchen has stainless steel and black granite countertops with new appliances. The 1st floor studio offers 650 sq. ft. with a bedroom, bathroom, and combined living, dining, and kitchen area. There is a comfy queen bed in the spacious bedroom that also has a 8'X16' deck outside the French doors. The beautifully tiled bathroom has a separate tub and shower. The kitchen has new cabinets and appliances, and is equipped with the basic utensils and dishes for preparing your meals.
Together, both floors offer 1600 sq. ft. of living space with 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and two kitchens! The house will sleep 6. The floors are accessible by two sets of stairs on the outside of the house. There is no stairs inside the building from floor to floor. There are numerous decks and two terraces with patio seating. This makes a perfect setup for vacationing with Mom and Dad, extended families, or friends.
Encircling the home on two levels is 700 sq. ft. of barefoot-friendly Trex decking with bistro table and chairs. Another terrace has a Weber 2 burner gas grill and more patio seating, and a fire pit. All decking, stairs, and patio areas have railing or fencing to safeguard young children. There is no smoking allowed in the home. Sorry, pets are not allowed.
Beyond the decks, we have upper and lower terrace areas surrounded by the natural riparian forest - massive redwoods, maple, river willow and buckeye trees, with ferns, and sorrel beneath. We leave the vegetation in its natural state to support the redwood's ecosystem and the great variety of animal life that abounds in the area. We have no neighbors downstream; we look into the river forest as it continues to the west. Upstream, are two undeveloped lots filled with forest; so, we have great privacy and seclusion. Next to the dock there is a river-rock beach, making it easy to get in and out of the kayaks for young and old.

Another blissful five days where forced relaxation has rejuvenated and re-invigorated us. Thanks!
My family and I thoroughly enjoyed this home and location for 4 days recently. It was comfortable and spacious for our group of three adults and 2 children. We loved being on the river and used the kayaks that were included everyday. It was a short drive to the ocean and Armstrong Redwoods Park and within an hour of jet skiing on Lake Sonoma--a wonderful retreat from the Bay Area, with excellent WIFI connections.
Wow! What a great place! Spacious, comfortable home... and those views. It really was relaxing staying next to the water in that way. Kayaking on the river was one of our highlights. We were looking forward to getting on the river and spent as much time as we could on the water. We even saw an Osprey dive into the water and get a fish! It was nice having the Kayaks included with the place..saved money not having to rent them. The place was close to so many things, the wineries, the ocean beaches and hiking. We just didn't have enough time to get it all in. Next time we'll just have to spend more time there. We did make it out the ocean beach where the river meets the ocean, very nice. We had a wonderful time at this place and will definitely try to get back. Highly recommend this place.
Riverwest truly is a must for those trying to get away and relax from the normal stresses of life while not compromising a fun and activity-driven stay. There was plenty of space to house our group (having two definitely kitchens helped with the cooking), and the massive windows really opened the place up to the natural scenery. We were surrounded by massive redwood trees as well, so it felt very private and secluded.
We especially enjoyed the ease of use of the kayaks. Normally in the past we’d rent them separately, but these were available whenever we felt like exploring the river, which was a lot considering how enticing it was. Over the course of the weekend, we saw several turtles sunning themselves on tree trunks, herons fishing near the banks, and even an osprey nest!
The ocean was only a 10 minute beautiful drive away, and the Northern California coast really does sell itself. We stopped by the mouth of the river and saw a colony of seals that we were able to take some pictures of.
Cameron (the owner) was a great help, he made the whole process feel easy and stress-free, and went out of his way to take care of coordinating our reservation for us!
All in all, we highly recommend this place and are already planning our return next summer!
This House on the river was a beautifully tranquil spot. Far from neighbors so you could really enjoy the sounds of nature. Watching the otters along with the Osprey, great blue herons and other birds was fun. Enjoyed visiting around the fire pit and playing games at the large dining room table. Spent one day kayaking up the river and the next at Goat Rock. The beds were awesome and the space in the kitchen was great for friends or family to gather around the large island counter. And the decks... Every bedroom has its own little private area outside a set of French doors. Really beautiful. We really enjoyed our stay.
The Riverwest cabin is a magnificent vacation experience. We try to come up every year for some relaxation and family fun. There is so many things to do for everyone young and old: kayak, hike in the near by redwoods, go to the beach and visiting local resturants. The scenery is beautiful, it's so calming to sit on the decks and watch the sun set in the evenings.
This was the first time I visited the Russian River and I can honestly say I will never stay anywhere else! The property was spacious, comfortable and very private... perfect for a relaxing weekend away from busy San Francisco. The view is beautiful from both upper and lower decks, which is very sunny during the day. The best part was the private, easy access to the river. We stayed on the water all day. When the sun went down, we all sat around the fire pit to warm up.
Overall, this place has everything you need to enjoy the Russian River with family and friends.
