Nestled in the sunny woods with an adjoining private beach on East Bay, Enswell Cabin has easy walking access to the warm bay for swimming and canoeing, large open blueberry picking areas in Whiskey Jack Wildlife Refuge and School Forest. East Bay is now a small lake holding huge northern pike and walleye. The nearby Sucker River is a major steelhead and brook trout stream.
The cabin was designed according to ancient Indian principals for sacred architecture (called Stahpatya Ved) to enhance the experience of peace, meditation and attunement with Nature. The owners and builders are life-long teachers and practitioners of Transcendental Meditation. The cabin is carefully aligned so that light flows through the building from all four cardinal directions. Each room was designed so that the activities happening there would be in optimal alignment with natural earth forces to promote life, health and happiness.
Relax in front of the beautiful living room hearth built of natural Superior stone (the futon chairs and coach all convert to beds for slumber parties in front of the fire.) Enjoy meals in the cozy eat-in kitchen, dining table, or in the adjoining screened-in eating porch.
There are four primary sleeping areas - two complete bedrooms downstairs and two sleeping areas in the loft (kids will especially love the hobbit-like sleeping nook with huge tree root entrance.) Both floors have complete bathrooms (a fantastic large shower head downstairs and traditional clawfoot tub upstairs for soaking after a day at the beach). The tankless water heater never runs out of hot water.
In addition to the fully equipped office with high speed wifi, and a meditation nook upstairs, there are two large, upper decks for sunbathing and sleeping. The owners encourage you to try their special all-screen tents with thick, custom foam mattresses for an unforgettable night under the stars and, if you are lucky, the aurora borealis.
All in all, Enswell cabin offers the best of Grand Marais, all within an easy walk. Located in School Forest just six miles from town.
The owners request that there be no smoking or pets indoors, to preserve furniture and the atmosphere.

We had a relaxing retreat at Enswell Cabin. We thoroughly enjoyed the beautifully appointed cabin. Everything we needed was there. The manager was very responsive, easy to communicate with and a pleasure to work with. The wood-working and craftsmanship of the cabin is amazing to behold. The week we were there, the weather was not the greatest, but it was not a problem because we were so comfortable. So, thanks Nikki and Buzz for the opportunity to stay at this lovely property.
The Enswell Cabin is an absolute delight. Nestled in the pines, with not even a glimpse of another cottage, the log cabin is beautifully detailed, with windows throughout looking out into the forest. No need for curtains on any of the windows as the trees provide the privacy. The huge screened in porch, and the two second-floor open balconies provide plenty of protection from the mosquitoes. But, at least, in July, we did not notice any flies. The cabin does not have a view of the water, but it is accessible through a short trail through the woods down to the cabin's adjacent property on the East Bay. As the East Bay is part of the Sucker River estuary, the water is much warmer than that of Lake Superior allowing for very comfortable swimming. The East Bay also makes for great canoeing. It is a 6.5 mile drive (one way) into Grand Marais, which makes it a short car drive or a very doable bike ride. We highly recommend the fresh poached whitefish at the Lake Superior Brewing Company. Depending on the desired trailhead, the trails of the Pictured Rocks National Shoreline are just 15 to 45 minutes away. The 4 mile round-trip hike from the Log Slide to the Light House is one of the most beautiful hikes in the nation.
We had a great time at Enswell Cabin. It is a beautiful log cabin tucked two miles into the woods. The kids thought it was a great adventure as we drove through the woods looking for the cabin. The town of Grand Marais is small and quaint. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a must do. Our party had two adults and three kids and we had plenty of room. The large fireplace in the main room is beautiful and gives off plenty of heat on those cool nights. Bring bug spray and use liberally. The mosquitos were rough while we were there, but the bug spray made it tolerable. Highly recommend this area and this cabin if you are looking for small town charm and getting back to nature!
This is an absolutely beautiful log cabin, well off the beaten path. Clean & inviting, has everything you need & all the extras, too. Provides a spectatular natural setting and is close to all that Grand Marais and the surrounding area has to offer. Would highly recommend this property, we're hoping to return again, just as soon as impossible!
It was a very nice cabin. Plenty of room for 7 people in our family and nicely decorated. It was clean and well-maintained. It is well off the beaten path, a mile or two down a sandy road. It is just a short walk to East Bay and Lake Superior. The one complaint we have is that the stable flies were nasty along the lake shore when we were there (late June).
We had such a wonderful time! The cabin was plenty large for 4 adults and 2 small children, but very cozy and comfy at the same time. Even my wordworking, furniture making husband was impressed by the quality of the cabin. The beach was a short walk down a private road and was beautiful, perfect for the kids. We loved the entire area. It was remote, not a lot around, but exactly what we had hoped for. I was glad we brought all the necessities i.e. first aid, bug spray, etc., but staples were available in town and everyone we met was delightful. Thanks for a great time, we can't wait to go back!
