My husband was a sea-captain for many years, traveling through Asia, Europe, South America, the Middle East and Africa. He loved cities, culture and travel. New York was always a favorite of his and we wanted our own place in the city to call home.
Darlyn purchased this townhome in 1998
Because Harlem and Hamilton Heights has so much history.

A Harlem Brownstone with 2 fireplaces and 11 foot ceilings.
Really nice apartment in a lively neighbourhood. Spacious (for NY!), clean, and nicely decorated. Easy access to rest of Manhattan via nearby #1 train.
We had a lovely stay in Darlyn's Brownstone apartment in NYC. It is close to buses and subway connections, a real neighborhood, and very quiet at night. Apartment had everything that we needed and the owner gave us good tips on dining and nearby sites.
We found this apartment to be most accommodating and so full of the things we love on a trip ...full well-stocked kitchen, a big living room with a comfortable sofa, books, and tv. The large bedroom was great and the bed was extremely plush. It was also quiet and very cozy.
In addition there are so many shops close by and the bus and subway are a few blocks away.
For anyone who likes an apartment in NYC and wants to have a real taste of the City with comfort and all the attributes of home away from home, this is your place.
And, it is easy to reach the owner if you need to inquire about anything that you think needs attention.
Enjoyed being able to stay and feel part of the city. This property was clean and quiet- I only heard someone else in the building once and no traffic sounds. Bed and foldouts were comfortable and thermostat was locked but we were perfectly comfortable. Bathroom had a nice deep tub and for the four of us showing, never ran out of hot water. Sheets and towels provided and other things like blowdryer, iron, even q-tips available. Plenty of bedding and pillows. No problems with plumbing or running out of toilet paper. Plenty of lighting and kitchen was very nice to use. We didn't cook but did make things like oatmeal or heat up leftovers and never had a problem with any appliances. Even found a few things in the cabinet to eat once or twice (thank you- the peanut butter sandwich I made was a life-saver!) Followed directions on the use of the tv and no problems. Plenty of dishes to use and soap to wash them before we left. No freezer in the house fyi, just a mini-fridge. Front door does have a gap but locked well with a deadbolt so never felt unsafe, especially since we had the other doors to outside with locks as well as a gate so not really an issue for us. Beautiful décor and plenty of books and magazines if you need them. Borrowed the umbrella one in the fireplace one day which was another life-saver. Plenty of neighborhood markets nearby and a good pizza place down a few blocks (Olga's Pizza) that has large $2 slices and $1 drinks.
First of all I don't write many reviews but I felt compelled to write this one due to the wonderful experience we had. Darlyn is extremely gracious and had excellent communication throughout the whole process. I never felt wanting for information.
The photos really do the place justice. We really felt at home during our stay there and it's much better than any 4 star or under hotel could give you. It was clean, had tons of great lighting, plugs and every essential and more you would ever need staying for as long as you'd wish to stay. The bed was super comfortable which, being 6'6" I need to have with my back issues, etc. We had two kids with us and they were comfortable in their individual sofa sleepers. After a long day at seeing the sights, it was nice to come back to our brownstone.
As for location, I think it's just perfect. You're literally a couple or 3 blocks from the Number 1 subway which takes you to downtown in less than 20 minutes. You're still in Manhattan and if you want to just walk around there are a ton of great deli's in the area. You're only half a block from Broadway. So what we thought would be a concern about the distance was actually a blessing since we loved hopping on the subway after seeing a broadway show and unwinding for about 20 minutes. And the area is awesome. It's quite and we slept soundly. People in the area are very friendly too. There's a sense of community there.
And for what you get, you really can't beat the price. You just couldn't find something like this in a hotel and pay less than $500-800 a night.
If we ever come back to NYC, it'll be right back here if it's available. Highly highly recommended.
Great stay, close to subway, restaruants. Three adult women stayed in this place without feeling we were under each others feet. Queen bed, comfortable, and two sleeper chairs convert to pull out beds. I will definately be going back to NYC and renting this place again. Affordable especially when sharing with friends.
