Madaket is known for its beautiful beaches, great fishing, crabbing, kayaking, sailing and the most amazing sunsets on the island. It is the original fishing village of Nantucket. Old Madaket is a geographically small area that runs along Hither Creek . There is a laid-back quiet beachside community feeling in Old Madaket. It's 'old' fashioned in the nicest sense of the word.
New to Madaket is 'Millie's', a terrific restaurant and bar and a small convenience market paying a salute to Mildred Jewett a woman who watched over Madaket Harbor for over 50 years . They are only open during the summer season. Madaket Harbor is easily accessed from the town boat ramp, This is the only boat ramp for trailerable boats on the West End of the island. Hither Creek and Madaket Harbor are perfect for kayaking and sailing small boats. Kayaks can also be launched directly into Hither Creek.
Serenity and the best sunsets on the island!

Review Submitted July 7, 2011 Date of Stay June 17, 2011 Can't say enough about this place. Owner had great communication and was excellent to work with. The pictures online don't do the views any justice. We had 2 families total stay. Perfect room set up for 2 olders kids to be upstairs, while parents took downstairs bedrooms.Loved the fact the 2 downstairs bedrooms had their own baths. Close to town very close to beach and harbor. Quiet and peaceful. Loved the wrap around decks. No need to go to the beach with the incredible view. House was very comfortable and quaint. Air condtioning was a total plus with my 3 month old. Great price for the rental.Would definitely rent again. Rating:
5 out of 5 Edit your Response Owner Response: It is wonderful to have this special home built by my brother so appreciated. When my tenants are happy I am happy. This first season of rentals have brought me pleasant, considerate individuals who leave truly refreshed and ready to return next season. I feel grateful as a Nantucket native to be able to share my home and my island !
Our family of five (3 teenage boys) just returned from Nantucket and could not have been more pleased with this house. It was impeccably cleaned and ready for us to arrive. The bedrooms were great and we were able to sleep 5 very comfortably. We had all of the kitchen amenities we could want and the laundry room downstairs was great. Can't say enough about this place. Only about 4.5 miles from downtown and a very short drive to the beach. You could walk if you want but the drive was easy and parking at Madaket beach was easy. Fantastic sunsets and peaceful mornings off the back porch. We will definitely rent here again and will recommend our friends and family do the same.
Nantucket is a wonderful island to visit and this house truly is a marvel. Enough space for a family with four children, clean, well equipped, neat, with a great view. You can tell that the owner is looking well after the property. We found it convenient that the beds were made and that we found enough towels. We enjoyed BBQs on the gas grill and Croquet in the garden.
The owner was easy to reach by phone or email and available during our visit.
We can definitely recommend this place!!!
Step back in time in Nantucket and keep all the amenities, including large rooms, amazing beds, well equipped kitchen, brand new gas grill, games for young and old, flat screen TVs (though you'll never want to use them), washer and dryer... the list goes on! This is a most thoughtful house, in design and how it is prepared for guests by the owner. You will undoubtedly want to treat it with as much love and care as has been shown it. You will relish the views from the large picture windows, appreciate the quiet 10 minute walk to the beach at the end of the road, appreciate the 30 second walk to the convenient bus stop ("The Wave" comes every half hour typically in summer). We got to welcome in the new season at Millie's on June 2nd with a most delicious lunch! We walked to Smith's Point and had a remarkable discovery of conch shells and an entire herd/pod? of seals (about 30 of them). Our 18 and 19 year old were so excited they woke up the next morning for sunrise (before 5am) and again walked the 45 minutes to the point to experience the seals and relish in the quiet. Such a different place then the hustle and bustle of town. But every day, we took the Wave to town - museum explored (Whaling, Fire Cart House, Oldest House), window shopped, supported the Hospital Thrift Shop on India St and The Table (great coffee, tea and ready-made healthy meals).
Overall, so happy we decided to stay in Madaket - a first for us - and so happy to have found this gem of a house!
Make sure to make the 1000 piece Nantucket puzzle that is in the cupboard - great way to learn the island! You will be glad you came here and appreciate dealing with such an upfront and conscientious owner!
Beautiful home, great location, immaculate and fun.
We arrived and I was delighted that the actual property, the layout and the overall condition of the property were even better than the pictures! The house is extremely well maintained and the owner clearly has pride in providing a high quality experience.
The house is nicely located in a very quiet residential area. The three bedrooms are as advertised although the upstairs bedroom was much larger and nicer than we expected which was a great surprise.
The master bedroom and the other bedroom were both spacious; the living room was large and homey and the deck was very roomy and easy to access and we enjoyed dining on the deck and especially the sunsets. The grill on the deck worked well too.
The "basement" area is very clean and has a full washer and dryer and provides ample room for storing bikes etc.
We would recommend for families or up to three couples.
Great place....in a great place....with a great vibe.
The house is just as it describes, charming. It is what Nantucket use to be. It was perfect for two couples and a few kids. The deck and views are spectacular. It was the perfect walk/distance to Millies and the Beach. The kids loved being able to scoot to the beach on the side roads and crabbing in the creek.
The owner is lovely and was very helpful.
My only warning is that it is mentioned that a few hours are included on the clean and that if you get the sheets and towels started early it will avoid the extra charges. We did that and still were charged 6 hours worth. I called the cleaning company and they charge per hour but if three people are there they charge per person per hour. Just expect a hundred to two hundred dollars to be deducted from your deposit and you will not be disappointed. We spent 5 hours doing laundry and light cleaning and still was charge a fair amount.
That being said we really enjoyed our stay at this cozy gem.
We just spent a week at this beautiful house and had the absolute best time. The owner is absolutely wonderful, very easy to communicate with and work with, and left lots of information regarding the island. Gorgeous views of Hither Creek and the wrap around deck is amazing for watching sunset. This house encompasses and exudes the charm Old Madaket and of the island-- from the beautiful architecture of the house to the decor with oil lamps, baskets, photos of Millie, and shelves of books to choose from when you need something to read. It was such a treasure to get to spend a week away at such a warm, welcoming home. I felt truly immersed in the history of the island by staying here and felt as though I was staying in a family home-- filled with history and memories, not just a rental property. Walking to Madaket Beach is an easy, fun trip, and we actually ended up walking/hiking about 40 miles around the island during our one week stay. Eel Point is also a short walk (about 2 miles) from the house, and a must see! We had a wonderful time navigating the island primarily on foot-- as we were able to explore many of sights hidden along the Madaket bike path, that cannot be appreciated from a car. Bicycling is another great option to get around the island and into town. Would absolutely recommend this rental to friends and family, and would love to return next October! Trying to convince some girlfriends to come for their first trip to Nantucket! Thank you so much for sharing your home and island with us; we can't wait to return!
