About Julia & Dennis

We retired to our home state of Colorado after 27 years in the military. Since our retirement we have been foster parents, a Colorado State Park Ranger, a real estate agent and self employed. Our retirement became so busy we needed a place to retire from retirement. The Mountain Haven was the answer.

Julia & Dennis purchased this house in 2012

Why Julia & Dennis chose South Central Colorado

We purchased this property to have a mountain escape. We searched several areas and looked at many properties. This home had all the necessities we were looking for; quiet and beautiful surroundings, easy access to lake and river fishing, historical sight seeing, and nearby winter sports. It offers the serenity that we enjoy and we hope it provides others the same.

What makes this house unique

Enjoy the fire pit in the trees and the mountain views and hummingbirds from the porch. Play a game or two of horseshoes among the pine trees. Wake up in the morning and see the mountains from the lofted bedroom. Enjoy the history of South Park by visiting Fairplay and the surrounding country side. Spend a day at one of the two nearby hot springs or go rafting only 15 miles away. Fish Antero Reservoir, Eleven Mile Reservoir, Spinney Mountain Reservoir and the Arkansas River. Visit the historical town of Leadville. Visit historic Cripple Creek. Enjoy the many nearby hiking trails. Enjoy winter sports from sledding outside the door to skiing at Breckenridge or Monarch Pass.

Perfect Date Weekend!

  • 5 of 5

I was in a crunch the day before my wife's 30th birthday - no present and no idea what to do. I searched VRBO for hours and booked the Mountain Haven property for the weekend. I printed a bunch of the VRBO photos and put them in a kraft box and surprised her with a romantic getaway.

My plan worked perfect and my wife was very impressed with the property. I made a huge dinner on Saturday night since the kitchen is outfitted with everything you need. My wife also asked me to build a fire in the fireplace - which I was hesitant to do since I have never used a fireplace. It didn't matter because everything you need to build a fire is set out for you to use with very clear instructions. The fire I built was pure art.

We had a full agenda of going skiing at Monarch, soaking in the Mt. Princeton Hot Springs and heading over to Leadville for the Ski Journing National Championships. We ended up doing none of that - and just wanted to hang out at the house since it was so peaceful and nice. My wife found a nook upstairs with a vintage reading lamp and just cozied up with a book. I decided to watch the Golden State Warriors basketball game since every channel is available. When we wanted to get outside, we brought our nordic skis up to St. Elmo for some easy ski touring.

My wife said this was the best birthday she ever had. We also didn't have to find a sitter for our black lab because the property is pet friendly. There is even a mat to put your dog bowls on in the kitchen!

All in all - I approve. My wife approves. And my dog approves. We are all super picky and we couldn't find anything negative with our trip! And fellas - if you want to surprise your girlfriend or wife with a romantic getaway that won't break the bank - book this place now.

We had a great time during our stay at the cabin. It is furnished very nice, and clean, and comfortable. More than just a cabin, it is a nice house. Kitchen had everything we needed and then some, a lot of extras. The same thing with the bathrooms. It is also pet friendly. Loved watching the wildlife every morning and evening, lots of deer and birds. Beautiful sunrises on the mountains, I got some great pics. Just a short drive to Buena Vista and restaurants and shopping. Very scenic area. We can't wait to go back and do some fishing. Will definitely stay here again, the cabin was wonderful. The owners are wonderful people. Thank you so much for such a nice vacation. We loved it.

Great Cabin

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely cabin. We had a great time. Very clean and nicely decorated. Cabin is in a great location. Close to Salida, Buena Vista and Leadville.

Neighbor David helped us out our first morning with our dead car battery. He also recommended things to do in the area.

We would stay here again

Great House

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed several days here. It is in a quiet neighborhood, never saw many people. The house is spacious and has everything you need. The washer and dryer were great for a busy family. Detergent and dryer sheets are provided by the way! Many extras are here--condiments, games, movies, etc. Huge windows with great views. We enjoyed Hummingbird, deer and chipmunk visits each day! The bunkhouse is a great extra for teens. We spent our time riding ATV trails, exploring Buena Vista, St. Elmo and white water rafting. Great place, reasonable price.

Great Views, Great for Families

  • 5 of 5

The pics on line do not do this property justice. It's much more beautiful & very homey. It's located in a small rural subdivision of only a few homes. It has a very private feel as the neighbors are not close by. Inside the home, There's a lot of folk art, custom pieces, antiques & you'll feel relaxed the moment you step in.

When I booked last minute, I cringed at the $60 service fee I'd never paid a cleaning fee, pet fee, service fee & a refundable $200 deposit. I wondered why the extra fee on top of all the rest. It seemed excessive.

-honestly I was not expecting a lot. However, When I got there, I was like wow! Everything was exceptionally clean. There were Many details such as condiments & snack foods provided. There was pasta, coffee, tea, rice & much more. Detergent & dryer sheets are provided as well. I think if this were mentioned in the listing, this place would be booked a year in advance. One thing we hate as renters is running back & forth to the store. You'll never have to worry about that here.

The Windows & window seating are grand! I love the easy window blinds.

I took along my blue tooth speaker & my classical music was perfectly at home in these high ceilings.

(We had just spent 9 nights at another Buena Vista property close to cottonwood springs. While the interior was beautiful, the exterior was not & was right on the busy highway)

~This beautiful A frame is beautiful inside & out. There is no highway in sight & very little traffic.

We took our dog Lakota on this trip and the moment we arrived, he was happy and relaxed for the first time since we had left home. It rained a bit but we still enjoyed 2 fires in the fantastic in ground fire pit up the hill. There are a lot of games etc in the loft that we did not use as we had no young children on this trip. There is also a mini sleeping cabin perfect for a couple of young boys.

We enjoyed walks around the property, reading & relaxing (we rarely relax on a vacation). I would definitely recommend this property to friends, family or a business associate. This was a great way to end our Colorado vacation. The weather is very mild at this altitude & location 9500 ft or so

There is a trash compactor which we did not use--but no dish washer.

Theres everything you need as far as cooking utensils, pans & storage containers. There are tons of towels, full sized shampoo, conditioner, body lotion & shower gel. There were even razors, shave cream, tooth paste etc. Loved it❤
