I have been coming to the Scenic Columbia River Gorge for over 20 years - I love this magical place; so full of the Best that Mother Nature has to offer - from the best wineries, fruit orchards, biking & hiking trails, waterfalls, lakes, mountains, and the list goes on and on...if you love the outdoors - you will love it here!
I first came to the Columbia River Gorge to Windsurf which has always been a big passion for me. I have seen Hood River grow, and develop into an amazing Community of likeminded people who enjoy nature and the great outdoors.
I love gardening and really enjoy planting flowers and being here to see them blossom. I have planted an Apple tree, Japanese Pear tree, and a fig tree (that has gifted me some wonderful figs!). As well I have also planted lavendar, rosemary, sage, irises (large purple ones that bloom in June)and many other sweet adornments.
My projects last year included remodeling the kitchen and bathroom - along with refinishing the original fir floors. You will love the warmth that this cozy home has to offer!
This review is for a 6 week stay. I was in the area for work (goldendale) and i really wanted to have a place I could live in as opposed to being isolated in a hotel room. The Bingen house was excellent for me. The modern kitchen allowed me to cook whatever I wanted and pretend I was at home instead of traveling for work. The location was convenient to mtn biking and the great little town of White Salmon (~2 min drive). Hope to stay here again whether on work or pleasure!
This was our home away from home for us and our adult daughter for two weeks in July and we highly recommend it. The house and yard are lovely. Denise is a wonderful host, has lots of good ideas about things to do, and we appreciated the food treats she provided from time to time : ) The deck was the first thing which caught our eye on the website, and it met our expectations, great for hanging out with a glass of wine, and for playing guitar while enjoying the view! The house is neat, cozy, and very well equipped. Our only suggestion is a bedroom air conditioner would have been nice given some unusually hot days during our stay. As some other reviewers have mentioned, if the windows are open you can hear the train whistles very well from the house, this could be charming or annoying depending on your point of view. Bingen is a perfect home base for exploring the area, including bopping into Hood River or White Salmon. For folks interested in the outdoors we suggest getting a copy of “Curious Gorge” which has a wealth of info about hikes and points of interest up and down the gorge, around Mt. Hood to the south and Mt. Adams to the north. (We’ve been coming to the gorge for nine years and still find new stuff to do in this book.) Go to Everybody's brewery in White Salmon. Syncline & Cor wineries are close by and delicious, and if you go there also check out the Klickatat River. We also recommend rafting or kayaking the White Salmon River – which now has salmon and steelhead in it thanks to the removal of Condit Dam a few years ago! We had a great time and would definitely come back!
Stayed a week and loved this cozy, nicely furnished and well cared for home. Denise is a wonderful host (she lives in the downstairs unit) and helped suggest things to do and places to eat. The house is just a short walk to the Main Street of Bingen. White Salmon is right up the hill. Loved the deck and the sound of the trains. Very nice upgraded and well stocked kitchen. Originally from Washington State so it was really nice to be in such a central location that made it easy to explore both sides of the Columbia Gorge...Hood River and Mt. Adams areas.
We thoroughly enjoyed our extended stay in this cozy home in Bingen, Wa. Denise is very friendly, helpful, and hospitable. We highly recommend a stay here!
The house has many great updates- very nice kitchen, bathroom, washer & dryer, satellite television, dvd player, and wifi. The kitchen is stocked with everything needed to make a nice meal to be enjoyed in warm weather out on the deck. The yard has undergone a major renovation and it is beautiful. Again, the large deck is a peaceful place to enjoy the gorgeous views and drink a cup of coffee or glass of wine.
Staying in Bingen/White Salmon (a quick 5 minute trip across the bridge) is a great alternative to downtown Hood River. There are many excellent restaurants- Henni’s and Everybody’s Brewing in White Salmon. Bingen has Taqueria El Rinconcito Express, Mugs Coffee, Dicky’s Farm Store, and several more restaurants. The Farm Store carries many local wines, produce, and freshly baked pies & donuts. The Feast Store in White Salmon also has a nice selection of local and organic products some of which we don’t have in Portland. If you have a chance visit AniChe Cellars, Syncline, and Domaine Pouillon Wineries. Dog Mountain is a great hike with an awesome summit view. The trains run often, in our opinion it adds to the charm and it’s easily tolerated. Our young kids loved it and would run to windows to catch a glimpse. We have great memories of our stay here and look forward to coming back again soon.
Our stay at this VRBO was quite pleasant. The four star rating (instead of five) is due to the train noise, especially the whistles ... throughout the night. Otherwise, the property is "as advertised." Denise is a most gracious host, sharing information about the area, as well as the local fruit! We enjoyed outings to both sides of the river, multiple mountains, and even saw deer from the house.
Add this to "Lita Lilly's" review. I am "the other grandma" to our lovely twin granddaughters who live in Hood River. Denise's little hideaway was a blissful haven for 5 months for these two very happy but very tired grandmas. Lita Lilly and I mostly alternated our time in Oregon. We spent many nights with our kids giving them help and breaks with the babies so we really needed a place to go to just relax and enjoy ourselves. And our kids, though happy and grateful to have us, needed their own time as well.
It was so wonderful to be able to come "home" to Bingen as we came to think of Denise's rental. It was clean, warm, cozy, comfortable, homey and had everything we needed. Denise was very responsive to any request or suggestion.
As mentioned before, there is a train that goes by from time to time. I didn't grow up with the sound of the train whistle but I found that I rather liked it.
Lita and I will have to toss a coin to see which one of us buys the house if Denise ever sells it. Or we may just have to buy it together!!
Thank you so much Denise for providing this wonderful haven for us!
315 North Cedar is on the way to the lovely scenic route to the Windriver Winery. Fruit Orchards, World class Flyfishing, white water kayaking, and rafting on the White Salmon river are just a stone's throw away. The famous fish hatchery, Swell City, and Doug's Beach are just a 10 minute drive away. The bird's eye view from Dog Mountain along with many other hikes are all on the Washingtion side of the Columbia River.
Bingen and White Salmon also have some of the best Bistros and Restaurants that the Gorge has to offer - all a 2 minute drive away.
