Bugs and Filth in Balmain
We booked this property over the holiday season and chose this property because of the 3 bedrooms and rooftop fireworks. Giacomo was a pleasure to deal with prior to our arrival and very helpful with questions relating to New Year’s. However, upon arrival it became very clear that this property was drastically over represented and over valued for the condition it is in. The towels were stained, and the headboard in the master bedroom also had a huge stain. Disgusting! The whole house has a dank smell (my kids were gagging). The upstairs bathroom had a drainage problem and water pools up on the bathroom floor, making the bathroom difficult to use. We had to take really quick showers to avoid a swamp! There were also dozens of BUGS on the ceiling in the bathroom. When we called Giacomo extremely upset, he offered to send a cleaning lady to come inspect the property. She never showed up! Giacomo also offered to refund a portion of our money and once we checked out, he refused to do so.
In short, very disappointed that Giacomo refused to keep his word regarding a discount on the very overpriced rates he was charging during the holiday week. We wound up seeing the fireworks on a boat for the 9 o’clock show which was wonderful and returning to the house to view the midnight fireworks on the rooftop, which was also wonderful. But not worth the price we paid for the conditions we endured during our week of vacation!
Vindication. This client declined all of our attempts to return to the home and 'make good' their complaint seeking a financial gain by way of damaging our 60 or so five star reviews. They made a financial claim against us and LOST because we had supporting photographic evidence addressing all of their fraudulent claims. They remained at the home the entire time. We had our cleaner arrive at an appointed time to meet with them only to arrive and find that they were not there as agreed.
Following is my original reply before having to SUCCESSFULLY defend our business against their fraudulent claim. It is only natural that clients will seek properties with good reviews and those of you reading this with the idea to stay with us should look at all or any or our other reviews over the last 5-6 years. Wow clearly there is a lot going on here. More than meets the eye. Of our 345 stays and over eighty 5 star reviews since 2014 This review clearly is out there on it’s own. We value our clients greatly this was very distressing for us and we naturally were concerned for the client.
Basically the whole experience felt like, we have arrived, now we want a discount and if we don’t get it we will give you a bad review.
On calling to follow up on our clients and make sure all was well, I learned of ‘bug’s’ and a stained headboard and dirty towels. This was just so shocking for us to hear that we offered to fly back to Sydney to ‘inspect and make good’ the client's complaint. No, no said the client that’s not necessary but we would like some compensation as we don’t feel it is up to standard.
I called Home Away (VRBO) to explain the situation and better understand how to apply some service recovery, as we were far away dealing with a family matter. I pointed out to VRBO that we have had nothing but 5 star reviews since 2014 and that we felt it was a ‘discount scam’ . It was astounding to us also because the day before we had a group of clients staying for 5 days and they loved it and they moved into our other house next door VRBO 618362 and stayed for another week. They loved that house equally and no complaints.
During the period in question, I can only assume that the mini bugs that were there was because of the severe drought and raging fires and severe smoke not only in Sydney but Australia wide. It made world headlines. The micro bugs it seems were a by product of this prolonged weather pattern that affected many homes for a day or two. The client refused to use any aerosol we provide for flies. There was talk during the lead up to NYE fireworks that they may be cancelled due to the bushfires raging south and west of Sydney. Indeed many other scheduled fireworks were cancelled but eventually it was decided that Sydney’s World famous display would go ahead. Perhaps this uncertainty that the fireworks might not go ahead played a part in seeking ‘compensation’ for something they had paid for but might not go ahead.
Whatever the case after inspection of the house we felt that we had no case to answer. All other reviews clearly point out how beautiful, spotless and comfortable the house is. Please feel free to refer to any of them as far back as 2014.
Best place to enjoy Sydney
We have stayed with Giacomo and Lynn before in their other beautiful property, so we were delighted to stay in this house! The home is beautifully decorated, with all modern conveniences. We appreciated the extra adapters for our technology. We loved the peaceful location and easy access to the ferry. Great two pubs in town with exceptional food! We will be back!
