About Janet Oldham

Newly retired and enjoying freedom to travel.

Janet Oldham purchased this condo in 1998

Why Janet Oldham chose Kona Coast

After doing all the islands, Kona has the best weather. Not much wind and rain. Plus it still has a small town atmosphere. I have enjoyed the Kona Makai since it was new, coming with my parents. I bought and have maintained a vacation unit since 1998. I enjoy coming regularly to ensure maintenance, updates and replenishing is done.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great time. The condo is very nice and is in a great location. Josh loved walking around on the lava off the pool deck. We enjoyed our breakfast out on the lanai every morning. We saw some dolphins swimming by the first morning we were there!

Thank you again. We really had a fun vacation.

Kona Makai June 2017

  • 4 of 5

We only stayed 3 nights before leaving for Maui, but found the condo to be exactly as pictured. The owner was very helpful and responded to my questions very quickly. The air conditioning unit is really dirty and could use a good cleaning, but otherwise the unit is perfect if you are like us and want a place to rest after a full day out exploring. The pool is nice and there is a nice patio area overlooking the lava beach.

We were surprised to see roofers on arrival and it was somewhat noisy at times but since we were gone from morning to night, we didn't have to listen to it or see it as part of our trip. It was an inconvenience to find restricted parking in front of the condo due to the workers blocking parts of it off.

In comparison to the condo we stayed at on Maui at comparable price, I give it 4 stars simply because the other was bigger and the layout was more appealing inside and out. Also, I noticed this condo is listed on 3 different sites and the prices vary slightly due to fees and charges.... but VRBO is the easiest and best to deal with when vacationing.

Owner's Response: The good news is it's complete for another 30-40 years and the complex is converted to solar as part of the replacement. I'm sorry that the timing was bad with the necessary roof replacement. We were there ourselves during the replacement and saw the management actively supervising. They made sure cleanup was done and hours were 9-5pm M-F as well as making sure parking, access for everyone, and minimal impact. The AC unit is clean, we were just there and cleaned the filters as well as anything else from the roof replacement. They are new units. My rates are the same on all sites but vary by dates chosen. Different sites have their own fees that are added to the customer price. Customers can always book directly to avoid fees. For 15 years I always advertised and customers booked directly with me. Now all sites have converted to be the middle man and collect booking money which includes their fees. Comparing Maui to Kona is like comparing San Francisco to San Diego, same state but whole different area, rates and environment. I have many customers that have tried other Kona units and consider it a 5 star rating with very reasonable rates. Kona Makai is the best well kept, smaller complex in Kona and this unit is updated regularly and kept very clean.

Nice Location, View from Lanai

  • 5 of 5

We stayed three nights at this Kona Makai condo. The location is not far from town, we even walked into town one day, and you do have a view of the ocean from the lanai. You are set back a bit, so the view is obscured on voggy days. We sat on the patio down by the pool and watched the spinner dolphins play right offshore one morning. It was also fun to walk across the lava out in front and peek into all the little tide pools, watching the crabs scurry around.

There was some construction going on with new roofs on the front two buildings closest to the ocean so it was rather noisy to be by the pool or ocean during the day, but that could not be helped.

The unit was comfortable, with a nice little kitchen and a comfortable bedroom. The windows are set up to catch the winds, as long as the trade winds don't slow down during your stay. There are two wall air conditioners if you need them. The bathroom could use some updating, but all-in-all it was a great place to vacation. We would come back here again.

Kona Makai

  • 5 of 5

The condo was perfect! It is on the first floor which eliminated walking up stairs. It was very clean and had everything we needed. The lanai was very enjoyable to sit out on and enjoy the views and the peace and quiet. Most of the other guests staying there were very quiet. The views were beautiful! The pool was sparkling clean. The grounds were gorgeous with all the greenery. The location was great--close enough to shops and restaurants but away from all the hustle and bustle and noise. There are beaches a few miles away and a quick drive. We will definitely stay again.

Great condo

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two weeks in this unit and it was clean, comfortable and well stocked. We loved the comfortable king-size bed and the wonderful bath and beach towels. Loved spending lots of time on the lanai watching the birds and geckos play. The unit is well stocked with kitchen items and condiments. Great barbecue area near the water, beautifully landscaped grounds. The owner was very responsive and helpful. Would recommend this unit to others and will stay there again if/when we return. First floor unit was nice as we didn't have to climb stairs, great for seniors. Not a clear view of the ocean as there is a lot of vegetation, but it felt very private.

Lovely condo, everything you need!

  • 5 of 5

I spent 9 great days in this condo. The owner was very accommodating and responsive. The unit was very clean, peaceful and comfortable, lovely linens & towels and comfortable bed. Well stocked kitchen and closet of beach items - everything you could want! Kona Makai is a very nice complex with well groomed, beautiful grounds. Eating breakfast on the lanai was a treat while listening to the birds and watching the geckos play. Plenty of parking and a nice walk to downtown Kona. The patio off the pool is a spectacular spot to watch the sunset - one evening we watched a whale breaching as well! The spirit of Aloha is found here - I would love to come and stay again.

Very much at home

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I took our retirement trip and stayed for four weeks at this unit. Although the vegetation blocked most of the view from the lanai, it was, nonetheless, a wonderful time and we enjoyed the accommodations greatly. We felt so at home there! Almost everything we might need, and then some, was provided in the unit.

The full island tour bus picked us up two properties down the road and dropped us off practically at our doorstep. Access to the entire Kona area was easy. We really hated to leave at the end of our stay.

Both the owner and the property management were a joy with whom to work. The grounds were beautifully kept. Communication was prompt and helpful.

We liked it so much that we hope to go back for our fiftieth anniversary, in a few years, with our kids and grandkids.
