About Merlenna Higby

We built this home in 2011. As long time residents of Oahu, we find Volcano Village the perfect place for an escape from Oahu's busy pace.

Merlenna Higby purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Merlenna Higby chose Volcano

Volcano Village offers a quiet small town atmosphere, yet only 45 minutes from Hilo.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy the cool weather at this elevation and love to go on hikes, learning about the forest life in this unique area. The Farmer's Market on Sunday mornings is always a treat.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Cozy two bedroom cottage with charming and calming views. Perfect vacation retreat in between activities or to cozy up in and watch movies read a book etc. I spent a wonderful nine nights here and was amazed at the beauty of the cottage and how easy it was to eat out, cook, watch movies, play puzzles, or whatever other activity. Great location to drive to waterfalls, gardens, beaches, and @2 miles from volcano national park entrance so you can easily run over and catch the lava glowing at night, or take a day hike.

Cozy and clean

  • 4 of 5

Lovely little cabin with soft high thread count sheets and pretty towels. Quiet but for some normal neighborhood stirrings. Feels private. Very clean with great little wood stove (didn't find ax to chop more kindling...?) and heaters for chilly nights. Will happily return.

Great Little Place

  • 5 of 5

We only stayed one night this time but we will be back. We live on the Kona side of the Big Island but love to bring friends and family to Volcano Village for an over night so visiting the National Park is easier. We have stayed in other places before but this little well equipped cabin was the best of all. Very comfy, clean, convenient and cute.

Clean and comfortable in the rain forest

  • 5 of 5

Very clean and cozy retreat next door to Kilauea Lodge. Pleasantly surprised after two previous rentals which had rain forest mildew and bugs. None of that marred Kaluhe Cottage. This one is a keeper as far as we're concerned. We stayed there just one night with our nephew, his wife, and baby. Comfortable for all. We didn't cook but did check out the kitchen for a return visit. It looked like it was well supplied with utensils and pots and pans; We travel with a knife sharpener, spices, pepper, and some other essentials so we did not look at the supplies, which someone else mentioned were sparse. When we return to Volcano next month by ourselves, we will book Kaluhe Cottage. Would highly recommend for a small group.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. We are so glad you enjoyed our Kaluhe Cottage. We take pride in keeping our home clean and mildew/mold free. The kitchen always has salt, pepper, spices, coffee and creamer. Mustard, ketchup, salad dressing, and other condiments are usually there as well, which we keep in the refrigerator. It is always a good idea to grocery shop in Hilo or Kona, unless you are able to go to the Sunday Farmers Market at Cooper Center in Volcano, 6 to 10 am. (Just a short walk around the corner) It’s my favorite place to shop for vegetables, bread, tropical fruits, and great Ka’u coffee. You will also find ready to eat Thai curry, Romanian food, Won tons and a delicious breakfast! We certainly hope to welcome you back soon!

Cozy cottage in a fern forest

  • 4 of 5

Awesome cabin in a beautiful fern forest. The description of the amenities is very accurate except the pantry was a bit more minimal than I expected - sugar packets, artificial sweetener and coffee - usually there seems to be some miscellaneous oils or seasonings but fortunately, I had brought my own. Therefore, this was not a big impact to our group - I only mean this as an FYI.

We arrived on a rainy afternoon and once we had a nice fire going, enjoyed the drumming of the rain and watching movies. The cottage was about a 10 min drive to Jagger Museum, so we took a quick trip over late that night to see the lava glow. It was great and so easy given the weather made it not so desirable to hike much.

This was a great, cool weather retreat from Kailua Kona. We enjoyed the cottage, that location and the little town of Volcano. I look forward to staying again and exploring the area more on our next drive over.
