We built this home in 2011. As long time residents of Oahu, we find Volcano Village the perfect place for an escape from Oahu's busy pace.

Merlenna Higby purchased this cottage in 2011

Why Merlenna Higby chose Volcano

Volcano Village offers a quiet small town atmosphere, yet only 45 minutes from Hilo.

What makes this cottage unique

We enjoy the cool weather at this elevation and love to go on hikes, learning about the forest life in this unique area. The Farmer's Market on Sunday mornings is always a treat.

Guestbook comments from the manager

“Loved our stay. Beautiful setting with blooming flowers. Comfortable beds. Good bathroom with all amenities. Fell asleep to rain on tin roof. All was as represented and our stay was seamless (except for non-functioning DVD player but who needs to watch a movie when you're in paradise, right?!) I will be back and I will pass along this link to friends! Thx!”

Cozy cottage in a fern forest

  • 4 of 5

Awesome cabin in a beautiful fern forest. The description of the amenities is very accurate except the pantry was a bit more minimal than I expected - sugar packets, artificial sweetener and coffee - usually there seems to be some miscellaneous oils or seasonings but fortunately, I had brought my own. Therefore, this was not a big impact to our group - I only mean this as an FYI.

We arrived on a rainy afternoon and once we had a nice fire going, enjoyed the drumming of the rain and watching movies. The cottage was about a 10 min drive to Jagger Museum, so we took a quick trip over late that night to see the lava glow. It was great and so easy given the weather made it not so desirable to hike much.

This was a great, cool weather retreat from Kailua Kona. We enjoyed the cottage, that location and the little town of Volcano. I look forward to staying again and exploring the area more on our next drive over.

Cozy cabin in a fern forest

  • 4 of 5

Our stay coincided with some rainy weather and this cabin was a perfect escape from the heat of Kailua Kona. Once we had the fire going, the place quickly warmed up and we enjoyed the patter of rain from the comfort of a clean, dry cabin. Everything described in the listing is accurate. Just not, you really do have to bring everything yourself - the pantry is very minimal.

Living in Hawaii you are always a bit wary of weather bringing in creepy crawlers. Therefore, I was a bit nervous that the rain would bring in some unwanted guests but there was not of that here. This cabin was super clean and an anti-bug fortress.

This cabin is very close to everything in town - local store, cafes and restaurants. It is also a perfect location to venture to the park after dark to go see the lava glow from the Jagger Museum. It is a quick drive and really worth it but don't be like us and forget the binoculars that are in the cabin. You can see a lot but having binoculars would make it that much cooler.

Overall a great little spot and I look forward to staying for my next Volcano adventure.

Hand-crafted Beauty

  • 5 of 5

We were able to stay in this lovely cottage for only one night, but that was long enough for this retired builder to appreciate the love that went into the finish of this cottage. Even if you are not a carpenter you will notice the care that went into the wood counter, the wood floors, and the trim. Look at the attention that was given to the placement of the screws in the deck boards of the front porch! A very careful craftsman put this together. The furniture is interesting and contributes perfectly to the overall interior design. Look at the table and its joinery. The art on the wall and on the shelves was carefully chosen to reflect the region. Coincidentally, some of the bird photographs were taken by Jack Jeffrey, our host the following day as we toured the Hakalau Forest. Everything was clean. The bed was comfortable. The plumbing and the electrical all worked. The "housekeeper" went out of her way to attend to our every need. This little country place is a monument to pride and good taste. There is a great little grocery up the road that sells Spam Musubi at 5AM. There are several restaurants nearby. Volcano is a couple miles away. No neighbors were in sight, and the area was completely quiet except for the rain. Parking was tight and required some careful maneuvering. My only regret was that we were not able to spend a week or two there.

Great cottage, good value

  • 5 of 5

My family of four started here one night so we could hike at Volcano National Park. Serene environment; the cottage is literally in the jungle, but had all modern amenities and was well-appointed and clean. Location is terrific as well; very easy access to the park and local restaurants.

We would definitely stay here again!
