Nancy and I grew up in Colorado. We love backpacking, biking, and hiking. I spend most of my spare time hunting, fishing and getting the cabin ready for guests.
Nancy Tardy purchased this house in 1998
I fell in love with the area when I was a boy hunting deer and elk in the mountains north of town. Although the area is developing, it still remains a more laid-back resort spot with great hunting, fishing and skiing.
Deer and elk are often seen in the hay meadow in front of the cabin. We can bike to town or up Rabbit Ears Pass for a more challenging road-ride. The Emerald Mountain State Wildlife Area lies two miles north.
Absolutely adorable, cozy, CLEAN cabin! Perfect to spend the holidays in. We cooked all of our meals in the cabin and it's perfectly equipped kitchen. We made fires each evening and played games. Our dog LOVED running through the several feet of snow. Snow-snowing on the property through the aspens was gorgeous. Cannot wait to return and stay for longer!
This cabin is fantastic. If you like waking up to deer in the front yard stay here. Super clean and comfortable. Great communication with the owners and nicely supplied with basic cooking supplies like spices, cooking oil etc...there was even coffee in case you forgot it. It was hard to pack up and leave!
It's just a short scenic drive to the mountain and town.
My wife and I stayed at the cabin for a long Surprise Birthday Weekend last September. It was perfect. The owners were very easy to work with and the cabin was extremely clean and accommodating. Our only complaint is that they do not do shorter stays anymore.
We just spent a wonderful 5 days at this rustic cabin. We have 2 little kids and a dog and everyone enjoyed themselves. The wood burning stove kept us cozy for the first snow, the kitchen had everything we needed and the view was AMAZING. Our 3 year old loved exploring the the woods behind the cabin and we had a pretty wicked game of soccer out front. We can't wait to come back and try out what could be the perfect sled hill! The owners have clearly put a lot of time and love into the cabin. It was neat and clean. Don't miss the sunrise on the deck with a hot cup of coffee or hot cocoa! We will certainly be back.
Haller Hideaway is a charming log cabin tucked away outside Steamboat set on a plain that overlooks the rolling hills. My husband and I went to see the fall colors for our anniversary and the timing couldn't have been better. We arrived at night and woke up to a colorful landscape. The bedroom we stayed in was comfortable and the kitchen was fully stocked with everything we needed. The balcony was perfect for hanging out and looking at the stars with a glass of wine. The grill worked without a hitch and my husband cooked up a great dinner. Our dog lounged for countless hours on the balcony.
That said, the house had a major bug problem, which I'm not sure is a seasonal thing or a more regular thing. We first realized there could be an issue when we saw a fly swatter hanging by the front door. Then we went upstairs where the kitchen is, and saw an army of flies, and a few bees, buzzing around all of the windows and the lights. And there was another fly swatter hanging by the balcony door. My husband went to work killing as many flies as possible, but it was no use.
We went back downstairs to our bedroom and found tiny moths. They were in the bed and the bathroom as well. We shooed them away and ignored them - they weren't as pesky as the flies and bees upstairs.
We did our best to cook a few meals upstairs with the flies but eventually we gave up and ate our meals in town.
The owners thanked us for helping to kill the flies but it didn't sound like this was a new or unknown issue. It would have been nice if they had told us. Haller Hideaway is a great place to take a trip away from the city. Maybe we got unlucky with the bug problem, but it made for a less than stellar stay. Our intent was to have a romantic getaway and hang out at the house - especially upstairs with the huge windows overlooking the hills - but we hardly spent any time there due to the bugs.
We'd recommend this house if the owners can resolve the bugs issue.
We met up here with some friends who flew to Denver from the East Coast for a long ski weekend. We had a wonderful time. The log cabin with an amazing view of the mountians, many acres of open fields and a great woodstove was just what we were hoping to find. Everything was clean and in good working order. Both couples had plenty of privacy and space. It took us about 15 minutes to drive to the ski resort. We'd happily return.
Some people come to Haller Hideaway just to relax in this cozy vacation cabin, but if you're active, Steamboat has lots to offer. In the winter, snow sports are the order of the day, with plenty of options within a quick 15-minute drive, or you can do nothing but enjoy the view of Mt. Werner from the comfort of the living room!
Summer brings biking and hiking in nearby forests and wilderness areas. Stagecoach Reservoir and the Yampa River will delight you with fishing, boating, rafting, tubing, and swimming in the cool, clear waters.
Fall big-game hunting near Steamboat is some of the best in the nation.
