Named for the famous Pat Conroy novel, this four bedroom, two bath house has an 816 square foot deck with wrap around views of the ocean and sound. Two houses from the beach (35 steps) and close to all that Nags Head has to offer in shopping and entertainment, there is nothing you can possibly think of that isn't at your fingertips!
The first level features covered parking, an outdoor (enclosed) shower area, fish cleaning station with sink, and a storage closet. There is a five car driveway with covered parking for one and bbq grill.
Level two is where you will find the bedrooms. Bedroom one has a queen bed, ocean views, a flat screen tv/dvd and an attached bath that is also accessible from the hall. Bedroom two has a queen bed and flat screen tv. Bedroom three is equipped with one bunk (one twin bed and with a double and single mattress) and ocean views. Bedroom four is a small room with four built in bunks we like to call the 'ship's cabin.' This room is perfect for kids.
The top floor features a large open floor plan with kitchen, dining, and lounging areas that open up to an 816 square foot furnished deck with views of the ocean on the east and south sides of the house. A large cathedral ceiling with skylight creates a sense of being out in the open. Three couches, two chairs, and a long dining table furnish this area. There is a 40' flat screen tv, dvd, and vcr. The second full bath is on this floor and is complete with a washer/dryer.
The kitchen is well equipped with anything you could need. Sheets and towels are not provided.

Views are incredible.
35 steps to the sand! What more could anyone ask for?
We stayed here in June 2016 and had a wonderful week. The AC worked perfectly. The owner is very responsive and accessible if you have questions. A new wooden stair/boardwalk has been built over the dunes helping accessibility to the beach. My mom broke her foot just 5 days before the trip but was able to navigate her way to the waters edge.
Bring your own trash bags, coffee filters (cone style, larger size) paper towels and TP so you have those items right away at arrival. When you pack towels and sheets, you might consider had towels for the bath and kitchen.
The view is great even though 3rd house from the beach. The wrap around decks provide options for shade and wind protection during most times of day. The new deck furniture is great.
The house isn't perfect, but unfortunately not all people treat rentals as their own. There are some needed repairs that are cosmetic mostly.
Shopping is better in Corolla and Duck but we loved the lack of crowds on the Nagshead beach. Great shells. Super clear water. Great waves for the kids. Saw dolphins almost every day. Check water temps before you schedule your trip. Was a bit cooler than we expected for late June. Too cold to get in the first day!
I would go to Nagshead and stay at this home again. :)
It is a wonderful laid back house that has the best view of the beach!! We stayed 3 nights over Memorial Day weekend and all 7 of us enjoyed the house. The deck is perfect for late afternoon drinks after being on the beach all day. It is convenient to everything and not very congested in this area. We would definitely rent again, but remember it is a true beach house. If you are looking for fancy look elsewhere. Great walk to the beach as second house from beach!!
I stayed here from May 7-13 with my family - we were 7 adults, 2 babies (1 year and 2 years old) and 1 dog. It was amazing! The description by the owner of "35 steps to the beach" is quite accurate - you're technically NOT oceanfront but you really do feel like you are. The rooms are comfortable enough, but the main/upper floor is where you'd spend all of your time.
- Location is amazing...very quiet neighborhood, awesome views of the ocean
- Deck is extremely spacious with new, sturdy patio furniture
- Kitchen is open to the living space and has ample supplies
- Living space has new comfortable & oversized furniture, lots of room for the kids to play
- Screen on one sliding door was torn and there wasn't one on the other door, nor were there screens on most of the windows...this resulted in LOTS of mosquitoes and flies (the provided swatters were definitely used!)
- A/C was very inconsistent and ended up breaking - Christi responded to my text right away and sent someone that day to fix it!
- Could benefit from some curtains on the main floor as an option - would hate to obstruct any views, but it can get VERY warm up there
- Sand dune to the beach was fine for the average person, but I can see it being an issue for someone with a disability
I just don't think you can beat this spot. We hope to come back here, it made for the best beach trip!! Thanks Christi!
We had a group of 6 stay at the house, and it was great! Short walk to the beach, and an amazing porch where we spent as much time as possible. You're super close to the National Seashore, and we did daily runs down and back to Bodie Island Lighthouse! We had a couple of problems with the lights when we first arrived and Christi was very responsive fixing the problem. We'd be happy to come back again!
We just concluded our best family vacation ever! The house, "35 Steps to the Beach" was an important part of it. The house is as advertised--awesome! Although the house is not directly Oceanside, it still has spectacular, unobstructed ocean views, largely due to its wonderful wrap-around deck. And, while there were a few minor items in need of repair (loose backs on some dining room chairs, gross sediment in the dishwasher, and a hard-to-open front door), the house overall was fantastic (clean, well decorated, comfortable). It easily accommodated 4 adults, 3 teens and 1 preteen kid. Also, I must say, the owner was an absolute pleasure to deal with (and extremely responsive to our every concern). We would not hesitate to stay there again and highly recommend it!!
