If you are seeking the action/adventure options of the kingdom trails or burke mountain or are simply looking for a beautiful redoubt from which to soak in the beauty of the nek, this is the place for you.
Our one bedroom apartment is connected to our home by an enclosed porch. The apartment offers a very comfortable living room/dining room/kitchen main space with built in bookshelves, original art, and a tivioli two sound system. Wi-fi is also available. The kitchen is well equipped for those who prefer to cook in. A propane grill is also available. The small bedroom has a new queen sized bed. The living room includes a futon that converts to a queen-sized bed. Wide board pine floors and accompanying pine window trim and furniture give this space a clean and cozy atmosphere.
The apartment has its own porch overlooking three plum trees, kiwi vines, and our vegetable garden. Wild turkey and deer are often seen in our fields and the morning birdsong greets your awakening.
Our solar-powered homestead is situated on 36 acres of hay fields and hardwood forests. Trails begin out the back door and wind through fields and woods. Along with our garden, the house is surrounded by perennial beds and a number of fruit trees and berry bushes. The apartment has outstanding views of kirby mountain, fields, and hardwoods.
Along with our dog Kenai and cat Lulu, we have a small barn housing hilary's horse chipper and two alpine goats, violet and kirby.
While there is great dirt road biking and walking (nordic skiing and snowshoeing in the winter months) out the back door, we are only 15 minutes from the incredible kingdom trails and 15 minutes from burke mountain. Our local supermarket, the white market, is five miles down the road. Saint johnsbury, 20 minutes distant, offers great movies at catamount arts as well as the worth seeing saint johnsbury atheneum and the fairbanks museum.
The apartment is perfect for two, though it can accommodate a maximum of four. Sheets and towels are provided.
There is ample parking for two cars.
A minimum two night commitment is required. Our rate is $110/ night for two and an additional $10/night for each additional guest up to four.
Tom is originally from New Haven, CT and Provincetown, MA. Hilary great up in Norwich, VT. We came to this area in 1991 to work at Burke Mountain Academy, the first sports academy in the country. After six years of dorm parenting, we built this house within a stone's throw of Burke. Six years ago we added our studio apartment. Hilary currently works at the local hospital (NVRH) in the marketing department. Tom retired from Burke Mt. Academy in 2011 and is currently a student in Antioch New England's MBA in Sustainability program. He's looking forward to getting back on his touring bike and exploring sustainability initiatives in Vermont and beyond.
Thomas De Carlo purchased this apartment in 1997
Our property provides the peace and quiet that most people are looking for on vacation. We are only 10 minutes from the Interstate 93 exit, yet there is a sense of being in a beautiful rural locale.
We often look out our windows and pinch ourselves. Whether it's the view of Kirby or Burke Mt., a full moon rising on a crystal clear night, or the blossoms of our fruit trees in the spring, we feel very grateful to be where we are. Friends who visit often say this is one of the most peaceful places they've ever been to. There's something about the natural beauty combined with our animal pals that makes for something very special.
Our stay in the cottage was very enjoyable. The property is beautifully located, with great views. It is very peaceful there, you only hear the sounds of nature. One can fully "recharge the batteries". We enjoyed local farmers markets, and Country Store in East Burke has a great cookies! Also, Miss Lyndonville Diner is the best! Lots of hiking around. The house is very clean and has everything you may need for vacation stay. Internet was working fine. Lack of TV we considered a plus, did not need it at all. The hosts are extremely nice people. We are very happy to have stayed there.
My wife and I spent a relaxing week here with our dog. The property is on a dirt road but less than 10 minutes from a small town with all the essentials. We found enough moderate hikes within a 45 minute drive to fill up the week, and there is also a network of informal trails through the woods right out the back door of the cabin. The house and cabin are kind of on the back side of a small hill and not visible from the road, so it has a very secluded and peaceful feel. The owners are very friendly and went out of the way to make sure we enjoyed the stay. The unit was clean and is equipped with a full kitchen and gas grill on the deck. There is no TV in the unit (a good thing in my opinion). WiFi is available and the signal strength is pretty good, though more reliable on the side of the cabin that faces the main house. Overall a wonderful stay and we plan to visit again. Thanks Tom and Hillary!
We stayed here May 13 - May 15th. The apartment is perfect for three adults, one single and one couple. We had enough room for everyone's stuff, as we came for a Kingdom Hills Enduro race. We came with a truck, two bikes, and lots of stuff, and had enough room for parking, storing our bicycles, and we also brought a medium sized dog. The apartment has a nice roofed entrance, and there is a deck on the side of the house with chairs, table, and a propane grill that we really enjoyed. A full kitchen with everything from a tea kettle down to dish towels. The bathroom is a nice size, and definitely bigger than most others we have stayed at. The views are GORGEOUS at this home; It took us almost 36 hours to realize there was no TV in the apartment, but we didn't need one. Tom and Hilary are very friendly, accommodating, and really helpful. They also both ride bicycles in the area! Their dog Kenai is super friendly, and my dog really enjoyed running around with him. Oh! and there's two goats next to the driveway. They are however behind a fence and electric fence. Speaking from experience, it DOES WORK :)
We definitely anticipate coming back to visit, probably in the fall to see the fall foliage. Tom and Hilary were great hosts and the views and property is to die for.
Very pretty unit with everything we needed.
Quiet and peaceful. Thank you to the owners.
Actually stayed here for several months in 2009 (before the property was listed online).
The apartment is more like an attached cottage or cabin, and you have complete privacy. I enjoyed sitting on the porch in the mornings, enjoying the crisp clean Vermont mountain air with my first cup of coffee. There are trails in the woods adjacent to the property, and it is minutes from Burke Mountain and Lyndonville.
Tom and Hilary are the most gracious hosts one could hope for. Good people in every sense of the word. I wouldn't hesitate to reserve a stay here again when I return to the Northeast Kingdom.
If you go, consider bringing a tennis ball for Kenai. The minutes or hours we spend throwing balls for friendly dogs are not subtracted from our life span.
