About The Owner

Doug is a retired businessman who traveled the world for a living; Barbara a retired editor, retail manager, and Jill-of-all-trades. We both enjoy traveling, staying in foreign countries long enough to see the sights and absorb some of the local culture.

Both of us are very involved in community volunteer work. Barbara is a past president and currently a very active member of the Hoodland Women's club

Jed, our German Shepherd, doesn't let us forget his daily ballgame session or walk. He keeps us company during the day while Doug gardens, pastes together our 1920's era house or works in his shop, and Barbara gardens, writes, prepares feasts or does needlework. We are both avid readers and music lovers.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1993

Why The Owner chose Mount Hood

Because it is a beautiful piece of land with river frontage and abuts wilderness. We have traveled a fairly large swath of the Earth and think this is one of the most beautiful places we have seen. There are many wilderness hiking trails close by. It also is only an hour's drive from the attractions of Portland in one direction and the Columbia River Gorge in another. Barbara grew up spending summers in a family cottage on the Salmon River near their current dwelling, so she has known the area for more years than she will admit to..

What makes this cottage unique

Being secluded at the end of a dead end gravel road, having riverfront acreage with a swimming hole, a place to watch salmon spawning in autumn, a shopping center only five minutes away and a resort just across the river.

A Treasure

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful, restful time at the Dancing Bear Cabin! It was in an idyllic location with all of the natural flora and fauna, the Salmon River and quiet. This spot makes a good base for venturing out to see the national forest, ski resorts, waterfalls, and the Columbia River.

The owners are very nice and provided everything we needed: a clean, nicely furnished cabin, welcoming grounds and pathways, and recommendations for dining. It was a fabulous adventure.

We would stay here again. We found it convenient for hiking and accessing the Mt. Hood area, and we really enjoyed the comfort and quiet of the cottage and grounds.

Clean, peaceful, beautiful

  • 5 of 5

The dancing bear cottage is exactly what we were looking for. Such a relaxing little cottage with everything we needed in a beautiful setting. Hiking the area and around the cottage itself was perfect. Doug, Barbera, and Jed were a pleasure to meet.

Spent a week in this adorable cottage with my two labradoodles. I left feeling recharged 👍?🏼?

  • 5 of 5

Doug and Barbara's cottage is a beautiful sanctuary in the woods where you truly can get away from it all. I'm an ultra runner and so I spent the week training on some pretty fantastic trails while my daughter spent the week we ski camp. One day I had to travel to Centralia and it was too hot to take the dogs so Doug and Barbara ensured they had potty breaks and play time with their German Shepard Jed. It was an amazing week I truly feel recharged and ready to head back to reality.
