About The Owner

Doug is a retired businessman who traveled the world for a living; Barbara a retired editor, retail manager, and Jill-of-all-trades. We both enjoy traveling, staying in foreign countries long enough to see the sights and absorb some of the local culture.

Both of us are very involved in community volunteer work. Barbara is a past president and currently a very active member of the Hoodland Women's club

Jed, our German Shepherd, doesn't let us forget his daily ballgame session or walk. He keeps us company during the day while Doug gardens, pastes together our 1920's era house or works in his shop, and Barbara gardens, writes, prepares feasts or does needlework. We are both avid readers and music lovers.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1993

Why The Owner chose Welches

Because it is a beautiful piece of land with river frontage and abuts wilderness. We have traveled a fairly large swath of the Earth and think this is one of the most beautiful places we have seen. There are many wilderness hiking trails close by. It also is only an hour's drive from the attractions of Portland in one direction and the Columbia River Gorge in another. Barbara grew up spending summers in a family cottage on the Salmon River near their current dwelling, so she has known the area for more years than she will admit to..

What makes this cottage unique

Being secluded at the end of a dead end gravel road, having riverfront acreage with a swimming hole, a place to watch salmon spawning in autumn, a shopping center only five minutes away and a resort just across the river.

Relaxing Stay!

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable bed, lots of blankets, and adorable cabin! The gas furnace was very useful since it was a bit chilly. Very nice owners and loved seeing their dog, Jed, come say hello at the front door once in a while.

Great location for piece and quiet not far from Mt Hood Activites

  • 5 of 5

Had a good time! Great location and easy access to get to the activities of Mt Hood. Doug, Barb and Jed are extremely nice people. The property is so beautiful, they did a wonderful job creating a serene atmosphere. If you wake up early enough, you can watch the deer roaming the property. Would definitely recommend the stay to anyone.

Very comfortable, simple cabin, perfect for our needs for a long weekend

  • 5 of 5

The hosts were great, the property is lush and gorgeous, and the cabin was very comfortable. It doesn't have AC, and we were there on the hottest weekend in the history of the earth, but we anticipated that and brought a fan and they also provided one, and there is a ceiling fan so between those 3 we were never uncomfortable. We look forward to coming back again.

Very quiet cottage in the woods

  • 5 of 5

We had a very nice stay at this property. The cottage is perfect for 2. It has a really complete kitchen, a very comfortable bed, and nice bathroom and shower. The owners, who live on the property are very nice and accommodating, but not intrusive. The road to the cottage is rough! But we got used to it. We would definitely stay here again.

Peaceful, cozy, getaway with kind attentive hosts.

  • 5 of 5

Doug and Barbara were kind and attentive hosts, repeatedly going out of their way to make sure my stay was comfortable while I explored nearby hiking trails. The grounds around the cottage are lovely, and don't miss the chance to see the night sky. The cabin itself is well outfitted and perfectly sized for 1-2 people.
