About The Owner

Doug is a retired businessman who traveled the world for a living; Barbara a retired editor, retail manager, and Jill-of-all-trades. We both enjoy traveling, staying in foreign countries long enough to see the sights and absorb some of the local culture.

Both of us are very involved in community volunteer work. Barbara is a past president and currently a very active member of the Hoodland Women's club

Jed, our German Shepherd, doesn't let us forget his daily ballgame session or walk. He keeps us company during the day while Doug gardens, pastes together our 1920's era house or works in his shop, and Barbara gardens, writes, prepares feasts or does needlework. We are both avid readers and music lovers.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1993

Why The Owner chose Mount Hood

Because it is a beautiful piece of land with river frontage and abuts wilderness. We have traveled a fairly large swath of the Earth and think this is one of the most beautiful places we have seen. There are many wilderness hiking trails close by. It also is only an hour's drive from the attractions of Portland in one direction and the Columbia River Gorge in another. Barbara grew up spending summers in a family cottage on the Salmon River near their current dwelling, so she has known the area for more years than she will admit to..

What makes this cottage unique

Being secluded at the end of a dead end gravel road, having riverfront acreage with a swimming hole, a place to watch salmon spawning in autumn, a shopping center only five minutes away and a resort just across the river.

My sister and I recently spent 3 nights at the cottage. Pictures do not do the beautiful property justice. The cottage was clean and warm and everything we hoped for. Doug and Barbara are very kind and thoughtful and jed (the dog) is freindly and not imposing. We will be back.

We loved our visit at Dancing Bear

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful, restful, quite natural setting. We enjoyed the wildlife, birds, trees and the hammock.

Jed The Wonder Dog made us smile and feel right at home.

Doug and Barbara were gracious, accommodating hosts.

It was just what we needed & we will be back.

A Magical Place

  • 5 of 5

We stayed three nights at Dancing Bear, and hated to leave. Doug and Barbara have a beautiful property tucked into the forest, with mossy trees and creeks running through it. Our dog loved it, and their dog Jed is the most gentle dog you'll ever meet. The cottage is very comfortable with everything you might need. This is a very unique property, and we feel so fortunate to have experienced it, together with the lovely owners. We would definitely recommend Dancing Bear. Since we came in March, all of the beautiful flowers and rhoadies weren't in bloom yet on the property, so I'm sure it's even lovelier at other times of the year.

Peaceful Stay, Ideal and Cozy

  • 5 of 5

The owners of this home were so welcoming and wonderful. They were quick to offer help if we needed anything at all, whether it be a kitchen utensil or some ideas for activities in the area.

The cottage is very peaceful and quiet. There is a pond and a stream running through the back side and trail to follow if you'd like to explore the beautiful property. The environment made for a great opportunity to relax and disconnect from our busy lives. A handful of times when we needed to reconnect with the world, we found the internet to be fast and reliable.

There is something very special and peaceful about this lovely cottage, we will definitely return.

Transported in Space We Loved the Dancing Bear

  • 4 of 5

Dancing Bear is such a lovely place...the cottage, the property, and all accommodations. The hosts challenge guests to offer a poem for a discount in the booking...we found this just charming. We spent a rainy weekend reading Brian Boyle's Martin Marten to each other as we rested from our ski adventure on the mountain. We will be back!

So cozy, perfect winter getaway.

Doug and his wife were so kind and welcoming, their dog Jed was also very welcoming to our crazy pup. It rained most of the time we were there, so we didn't get to explore the area as much as we would have liked. But Doug showed us where to hike and they had many brochures to help you find things to do around the area. It was a short 30 minute drive to the Meadow Ski Hill and we spent one morning there, which was fantastic. Beautiful place, perfect for my husband, dog, and I. We had a great time and will definitely be back.
