Doug is a retired businessman who traveled the world for a living; Barbara a retired editor, retail manager, and Jill-of-all-trades. We both enjoy traveling, staying in foreign countries long enough to see the sights and absorb some of the local culture. Both of us are very involved in community volunteer work. Barbara is a past president and currently a very active member of the Hoodland Women's club Jed, our German Shepherd, doesn't let us forget his daily ballgame session or walk. He keeps us company during the day while Doug gardens, pastes together our 1920's era house or works in his shop, and Barbara gardens, writes, prepares feasts or does needlework. We are both avid readers and music lovers.

Why Owner chose Welches
Because it is a beautiful piece of land with river frontage and abuts wilderness. We have traveled a fairly large swath of the Earth and think this is one of the most beautiful places we have seen. There are many wilderness hiking trails close by. It also is only an hour's drive from the attractions of Portland in one direction and the Columbia River Gorge in another. Barbara grew up spending summers in a family cottage on the Salmon River near their current dwelling, so she has known the area for more years than she will admit to..
What makes this Cottage unique
Being secluded at the end of a dead end gravel road, having riverfront acreage with a swimming hole, a place to watch salmon spawning in autumn, a shopping center only five minutes away and a resort just across the river.

Super cute & cozy!
Dancing bear offers a comfortable, cleanly, and quiet stay. The hosts are welcoming & local activity pamphlets are provided so you don’t miss out on all the fun. Definitely will rent again if we’re in the area!
Beautiful and serene.
Cozy cabin full of everything you need. WiFi but no tv. Games and puzzles. A wonderful propane fireplace. Trails up the mountain by a brook and down to the river. Horseshoe pit too. Hosts were wonderful. Great place to get away and close to skiing.
Romantic Cottage Getaway
My husband and I stayed at the Dancing Bear Cottage when there was nearly 2 feet of snow on Doug & Barbara’s beautiful 13 acres of property. We brought our 4 year old golden retriever and he had a BLAST. The cottage is very quaint and homey. My husband and I enjoyed having a more intimate setting around Valentine’s Day to unplug and spend intentional time together. The cottage came equipped with board games and a wonderful furnace to keep the whole cottage warm during the chilly nights. We absolutely adored Jed, Doug & Barbara’s 12 year old German Shepard; he came to visit us a few times at the cottage and is so sweet. If you’re looking for a quiet getaway in a romantic cottage, Dancing Bear is PERFECT for you! Thank you Doug & Barbara for being such great hosts!
Our time at Dancing Bear Cottage was comfortable and warm. Everything we needed for our two night stay was right there. AND thank you Doug and Barbara for your added touch to make our honeymoon special.
A nice quiet relaxing getaway
Doug and Barbra were very friendly and accommodating hosts. The cabin had everything we needed for an off-the-grid weekend. We would love to come back. Highly recommended!
Thank you for the nice review, Ross and Liz! The cottage was left in perfect condition and we are glad you enjoyed your stay. We look forward to your next visit!
Doug and Barbara
Comfortable bed, lots of blankets, and adorable cabin! The gas furnace was very useful since it was a bit chilly. Very nice owners and loved seeing their dog, Jed, come say hello at the front door once in a while.
Please note- the Bridge over the Salmon River is being replaced in 2018. This will mean some construction delays coming and going. There may be some noise but it is about 1/2 mile from us. Generally we are quiet and secluded at the end of a private gravel road, abuts wilderness, property extends to the Salmon River. The small village of Welches has both fine and casual restaurants, a golf course and resort, many beautiful hiking trails, and is about 20 minutes from historic Timberline Lodge located at the 6000 ft. level on Mt. Hood. The views are extraordinary from this historic structure.
