The Casa de Alan is an ancient house fully restored in 2008, situated in Campiglia Marittima, a typically Tuscan, small and charming medieval town, perched on its hill. Founded in 1004, it was first named 'Campillia', from the Latin 'campus' (field).
Because it is near the sea and beaches, the adjective 'Marittima' was added in 1862.
Its hills are part of the Etruscan Coast, a stretch of land on the West Coast of Italy, where the region of Tuscany meets the sea. It stretches from Livorno in the North to Piombino and includes over 80 km of sandy beaches and coastline. From the coast you can see the Tuscan archipelago including the Elba Island and the North of Corsica.
The Casa de Alan is a charming ancient house, recently restored, located within the walls of an authentic Tuscan medieval town.
Its splendid terrace overlooks the most magnificent view of rolling hills, olive trees, maritime pines and cypresses as well as the famous Castello medioevale, the Rocca di Campiglia.
The house is built on one floor with 2 sub-levels and has an area of about 60m2 (645 ft2)
•1 bedroom with 2 single beds or 1 double bed
•1 bedroom with 1 double bed
•A modern kitchen fully equipped and dining area
•1 Living room with chimney
•terrace of 35m2 (375 ft2), with a barbecue, garden furniture (6 spots), 2 deck chairs and 3 umbrellas
I'm Swiss, born in Italy. I work internationally on the environment and social corporate responsibility as an independent consultant.
As a hobby, I'm a sailor and I must say that, of all the places I've sailed in, Tuscany is one of the best.
Pierre purchased this house in 1975
This house was where my father (Alan) spent the last 20 years of his life. When he died, I inherited the house and had it restored.
While the primary purpose of the house is to be ours, we rent it to minimize costs. We have named it Casa de Alan in honour of my late father.
If you go there, like us, you most probably will come to gradually love this place. Arriving, you will be first impressed by the narrow streets of Campiglia. Everybody is. The town is one of the most charming of the Etruscan coast.
Then, there is the house itself with its ancient beams and the terrace with its relaxing view over fields of olive trees.
The light of the sky is unique and transmits an energy that you can feel. No wonder the Renaissance started in Tuscany.
At night, there is almost no noise (except the bells counting the hours). The sleep is of unique quality.
And there is the food, the wine, all the places that you can visit in one day from there! This is Tuscany at its best. We love the place and I bet you will too.

We stayed for a wonderful week in the Casa de Alan and we can recommend highly both the house and Campiglia. The house is very comfortable, nicely decorated and in an ideal location for restaurants, bars and grocery shopping.
The kitchen is well equipped and while we chose not to cook there is everything in the kitchen required for cooking. The terrace is a real bonus. The house is private and the area quiet. Shops, restaurants and bars are within a short walking distance. The town is delightful with narrow streets and a good choice of restaurants to cover all prices. Campiglia is an ideal location from which to tour inland and the coast. The arrangements for our arrival and departure worked extremely well.
We stayed for a wonderful week in the Casa de Alan, a group of 3 adults. We can thoroughly recommend both the house and Campiglia...
The house is calm, very comfy, and decorated to a high standard throughout. The bedrooms are cool, a well equipped kitchen, and a superb and quiet terrace. It is located inside the old town, a short walk up a narrow street. Charming.
The town is a real gem, narrow shady streets, lively, and still with the impression of a lot of local life as well as the visitors. A good choice of regional produce .. our highlight was the small vegetable shop in Piazza Mazzini.
The house website is very informative and accurate. There is lots to see around apart from the pleasure of discovering the town, and there are excellent beaches very nearby.
In short, highly recommended!
Campiglia Mma is at center of a region where cultural sites, sport amenities or simply relaxing beaches are abundant.
Important Etruscan archaeological sites can be found, at Populonia, the main Etruscan commercial port before the Roman times. Do not forget neither to visit the ruins of Ventulonia towards Grosseto. Further, you can visit the remarkable Etruscan necropolis of Monterozzi near Tarquinia, a UNESCO’s world heritage site. It contains 6.000 tombs, 200 of which, painted with beautiful frescoes can be visited.
Prestigious historic and artistic sites, such as Florence, Pisa, Volterra, Siena, San Gimignano, Perugia or Assisi can be also visited in one day from Campiglia. Not to mention the Tarot Garden by Niki de Saint-Phalle in Capalbio.
Taking the Ferry at Piombino can lead you to the Island of Elba where Napoleon was kept prisoner. Elba’s landscapes well deserve the excursion.
The Tuscan region is also famous for its olive trees and vineyards. The wine road Costa degli Etruschi is a wine testing experience through the province of Livorno! It is divided into 4 production areas: Bolgheri Doc, Elba doc, Montescudaio Doc and Val di Cornia. Some of the very well known wines include Ornellaia, Sassicaia and Guado al Tasso (Bolgheri Doc)
From gastronomic restaurants to local restaurants, enjoying the Tuscan cooking is a Epicurean experience.
Sport oriented visitors can enjoy aquatic sports as sailing, swimming, surfing and diving.
Golf lovers may discover the trendy Punta Ala marina golf course (40 minutes away from Campiglia). The Punta Ala marina is home of the Americas’ cup Italian Challenge Luna Rossa.
Private sailing activities, such as a trip to Elba Island, can be organized upon request.
Cycling is also very common for the many small roads dwindling across the soft hills of Tuscany.
Aquaparks can be found in Cecina and Follonica (25 minutes away), where children (and their parents) can enjoy all the amenities.
